Well, when I want to do a poem on someone or something I don't know much about, I start with research. Good luck, and Welcome to Passions! |

Sweetzombie, Think about why you want to go to the childs concert, then work from there. I'd also advise doing some research on her life, and early years. Go to "Google" and type "Madonna". She is a good, and interesting person. Bobby |

Dear Ms. Zombie, Verse is what you write to specifications. That's pretty much what they want for contests of this sort. You have to have some idea of what the judge is looking for to have much of a shot at such things because these are more advertising gimmicks than actual poetry contests. The person who dopes out what the judges think is Madonna's most appealing current image is and puts it most winningly will win, or else the person who gives the judges the best NEW idea for what Madonna should do with her image next, if it's possible for her to make the jump successfully, might win as well. Poetry is not something you can write to specifications because it is as much a surprise to the writer as it is to the reader. The use of the language, the turn of phrase, the sense of discover must feel fresh for you while the writing's happening, a sort of happy shock, even if it may be about fearful or sad things. That's why, I think, Emily Dickinson said that she knew something was poetry when it blew the top of her head off. Blowing the top of your head is about waking up from being the same zombie as so many others are, and become alive. This is much more frightening than being a zombie, in my experience. Writing verse is good practice, though, and one of the things you want to do as a poet is simply keep those words moving onto the page. You can't go too far wrong with that. As long as you keep playing with the words and having fun, that's the point of it. Print is incidental. If you keep writing, it'll come eventually. |

Bob K, I found your advice very very amazing. I am really glad that I took the time to read this post as I learned something about poetry that I will value for the rest of my life. As for the Original Post, I think that the best way to approach this is find a way to encompass Madonna's highest of highs and her lowest of lows and make them shine and at the same time be clouded. You are going to have to put a lot of effort and thought into this because the judges are looking for something that stands out. Not something that is cookie cutter or expected. -Kellie |
