Tommorrow night, I plan to go and see a phenomenal musician play in Atlanta Georgia; Guitarist Tommy Emmanuel. The legendary Chet Atkins once said that Tommy was perhaps the greatest fingerstyle guitarist in the world. And though I typically shy away from winner-take-all claims of who is the "best", I am almost inclined to agree. The thing is, Tommy is a master performer and musician that can be enjoyed even if you are not a guitar player. His sense of melody combined with amazing dexterity, makes him a joy for anyone to listen to. And on top of that, I've never seen anyone have so much fun playing. It makes you happy just watching him. So, after I incinerated my guitar in the backyard with gasoline and matches ![]() Here are a few clips from Youtube to get you started. Enjoy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iN65vtDmdr0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lbvSBNLLoo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZNJf-h7F8s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLz3kZ0_dWE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhR04kmcSXU&mode=related&search= |

Stephen, I sure hope you enjoyed Tommy as much as I did Dave. I've been a serious fan for over 50 years. At 86, he shuffles a bit when he walks and his voice may be a little weak and shaky but when he hits those ivories, the legend lives. This was the first time I heard his Mass performed by the quartet along with a 30 piece orchestra and 120 voice choir. I don't think you typically expect to see 5 long standing ovations at a formal concert hall. ![]() BTW, I heard a rumor that Tommy will be in Ft Worth some time in June. That's pretty close. I may just jump on the train and go down for the weekend. Oh and I do apologize for hijacking your thread. Do take it back over and fill us in on your evening please. Pete |

Okay, update ... The show was spectacular. I was a bit disappointed that he didn't play many tunes from his new album "The Mystery" (which is odd, since he is supposedly on tour to promote that very album. But my disappointment was really petty, considering that he put on such a show. He did a lot of cover tunes and earlier stuff. He played everything with seemingly as much ease as I chew gum. His dashed his performances with short-enough conversation, often humorous. A band called "The Greencards" opened for him. And they were very good. But I felt kind of bad about something ... I was anxious as to whether I could get a signature from Tommy or not, so after the Greencards finished, I approached their young guitarist, enquiring whether or not he could help me get Tommy's signature. That poor kid ... I was exactly the kind of "fan" that he didn't want to meet. I made a brief (though sincere) comment about how well he played, only to quickly change the conversation to Tommy. I even asked him if he had heard of "Nickle Creek". (LOL). Not only did I choose to talk mainly about another guitarist, but also mainly about another bluegrass band. That guy was probably glad to see me leave. I'll do better next time. And to the Greencards and their new guitarist (if you ever read this) hats off. You guys did great! I guess I was just so focused on the guitar monster from down under, that I forgot my manners. I have to work on my fan etiquette. ![]() Anyway, as I came to find out, Tommy makes the practice of staying around after the show to talk to his fans. So I got in line. He was a genuinely kind and warm personality, and a joy to meet. If any of you ever get a chance to see him live, do so. You won't regret it. ![]() Thanks for all your replies. Stephen. |
