Syndey Morning Herald: September 4, 2006

The famous TV personality and environmentalist Steve Irwin, famously known as "The Crocodile Hunter", was killed by a stingray while filming a documentary off the coast of Queensland.

Steve Irwin has been one of my favorite TV personalities in all recent years, where my family and I especially giggled often in response to his unique, colorful, energetic personality and catch-phrases like "Crikey!".

I thought it was stupid for him to hold his baby with him near the crocodile a couple years ago on that one infamous incident, as that could have been a tragedy waiting to happen, but despite that blunder I always enjoyed his shows and I will miss him immensely.

I know many were thinking all this time, "He was asking for it, sooner or later he was going to underestimate an animal and get himself killed!" but all the same this is shocking to me, as Steve is both an inspiration and a sentimental icon to me.

God Bless You, rest in peace, Steve, and as you always said, "Where I live if someone gives you a hug it's from the heart.", so I send my spiritual hug and thanks to him and his loved ones.

Sincerely,
Noah Eaton

I'm sorry to hear of his passing, Noah.  He was good, clean entertainment and yes, he took chances, but "deserve it?"  No.  I wouldn't think that way, no more than I think that people who build skyscrapers or jet pilots who test planes "deserve it."  He died doing what he loved to do.  Can we all say that?

He lived, he laughed, he loved.  RIP, Steve.

Oh, this is such sad news Noah.
He will be VERY missed.
I was a huge fan of his enthusiasm and love of nature.

He was just a genuine man,
who genuinely loved nature.

I wrote a tribute poem about him 5 years ago and wanted to copy it here for you. Here's the original link with some fun comments from long ago:

.
In Tribute to Steve Irwin - "The Crocodile Hunter" (Sept 30, 2001)

Now if I sound enthusiastic, it's because I am …
I want to share the story of a very special man;
He's not a cartoon character, nor fiction writer's dream,
He is as real as you or I - a man of great esteem.

A native of Australia, where he was born and raised,
Among the crocodiles, he grew, in tune with nature's ways;
From infancy to teenage years, he gathered vast respect,
For all the creatures of the world who suffer from neglect.

It's through his grand enthusiasm, all are mesmerized,
His love and his sincerity could never be disguised;
It matters not the species, nor their size or temperament,
From scales to fur - from fins to paws, his warmth is heaven sent.

He charms the largest crocodiles, he soothes the fiercest snakes,
He swims with seals and sweetly calls orangutans his "mates";
He cares for wombats, wallabies and joey kangaroos,
Koalas, spiders, geckos … there is nothing he'll refuse.

He sees the beauty in their souls, acknowledges their pain,
Explores deep in the heart of them, what others can't explain;
"She's just a little grumpy," he may whisper to the wind …
"But isn't she just darling?" he will murmur with a grin.

In total admiration, he implores, "Look in her eyes!"
"She's beautiful … she's gorgeous!" as he genuinely sighs;
Infectious in his presentation, one can't help but feel,
The same emotions he portrays with passionate appeal.

The world would be a better place, if more would emulate,
This hero of the wilderness, whom I appreciate;
A teacher of the greatest sort, he shares his gift with all …
The gift of understanding, for all creatures great and small.

Oh Noah, this is so sad. I heard it on the news this morning. Over the years I have watched him and enjoyed his antics and fantastic sense of humor.

He will be a great loss to so many.

hugs and tears, Marti

I won't be longwinded, for there will be
enough praise placed..deservedly so.  I
will say I am stunned,  I am saddened,
I have shed numerous tears already...and...
I will miss him,  just as his family will
as well....Tragedy is never timely...

Noah, I am deeply saddened to learn of Steve Irwin's untimely passing. Tears are falling as I am typing...

My daughters and I were faithful watchers of his television show. In fact, my eldest daughter has his series on tapes (a birthday request which I enthusiastically complied with!)

His love and respect for the animal kingdom, was admirable. His Light will be greatly missed.

God speed, Steve!

I just read Kit's fabulous poem in her reply to your sad announcement. I think it would be wonderful if she would repost it in Open.

Steve was so passionate about his dealings with these animals it was contangeous.  I used to think he was taking some very daring chances, but how sad I was to learn of his tragic death.  My prayers are with his family.

Thanks for posting this and I agree that Kit's poem should be posted in open.
