httpUpdate From Torino Anne Abernathy (Grandma Luge) suffered a broken wrist and an injured shoulder and collar bone in a training run crash this weekend. As a result, she will be unable to compete in her luge events scheduled for Monday, Feb. 13 and Tuesday, Feb. 14. In a call to Hatquarters Anne sadly relayed the news and told us that she still intends to either carry or wear her red helmet (with the purple stripes) in the closing ceremonies in honor of the Red Hat Society and all of the other women in the world over 50. Let’s all rally around her, in the Red Hat Society spirit, to celebrate her career, her spirit and her courage! On the “Today” show this weekend, it was noted that Anne’s journey to the Olympics has left her $100,000 in debt.If your chapter would like to help her defray this debt, please click here » We continue to look forward to having Anne speak at our international convention this summer in St. Louis. Countdown to the Olympics The 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Torino, Italy are just around the corner and Red Hatter Anne Abernathy aka "Grandma Luge" has qualified for her 6th Winter Olympic appearance. At the age of 52 she will become the First woman over 50 to ever compete in any Winter Olympic event. Grandma Luge invites Red Hatters to join in the excitement and especially the fun as she makes Olympic history. Here is how she put it at the Las Vegas Convention: Baron de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic Games said, "The important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, The essential thing is not to have conquered by to have fought well, The important thing is not the triumph but the struggle" Because each of you as a Red Hatter has elected not just to sit back, but to jump in and take part in life despite all the struggles.
