Serenity has checked in. They're batting down the hatches and plan to ride out the latest storm. She says they're one of the lucky ones - they have gas utilities. Let's keep her and our other Louisiana poets in our prayers while they wait out this newest storm. http://www.sciencedaily.com/upi/?feed=TopNews&article=UPI-1-20050827-1146 5300-bc-us-katrina-1stld.xml [This message has been edited by Sunshine (09-04-2005 12:19 PM).] |

Yawp, I told her to dig out the lamp oil and candles, batteries, anything one can put fresh water into, get sand bags and finish boarding up. Wasn't sure about cooking everything possible in the fridge/freezer, since I'm not sure how she will be affected. I'm in Arizona now, but was raised in coastal Texas, during the hayday of Texan hurricanes during the 70's. And some lessons you never forget. |

Well, I'm trying to look on the bright side. Our porch is clean for the first time since we moved in. ![]() And trust we are all taking this very seriously, and prayers of all denominations are being gratefully requested. And I'll be checking in, cause ya'll know I won't break down the pc until I haveta. And hey? Pray for everyone along the gulf coast. Here in New Orleans the concern is the amount of rain this one is packing, as our friends in Florida well know. speaking of which, shouldn't Balladeer be checking in? ![]() Check in buddy. Love to all. ![]() |

we're keeping a close eye on this thing over here in the panhandle praying for those in New Orleans and along the miss/ala coast...it seems the panhandle might dogde the bullet on this one having been through Ivan and the much kinder Dennis, I can relate for sure, the stress, the fear, the aggravation of it all I'm praying for all of us Karen, if power goes out, please find a way to keep in touch and let us know you are okay. |

Well, this one is pretty scary. So...although total evacuation isn't an option for us, we do have an ace up our sleeve. If necessary, we can evacuate into New Orleans (nice, huh? ![]() ![]() So I should be around tonight, but if I'm absent tomorrow, it could be I'm there. (And I ain't goin' without my momma either. If twist is reading this, she'll tell her that. ![]() Thank you all so much for keeping me company, and the prayers? Well, I've seen what prayer can do, so I'm grateful to you all. smoooooooooches ![]() with love, from chickensplit serenity |

Be very careful there. According to some studies from LSU, you could be looking for at least 16' of water. That's not a typo. Feet, not inches. |

16 feet of water! I thought she was kidding! ![]() Wishing all our friends in those areas a safe walk through this one. I went to this site, which is close to Karen, to keep an eye on me other twin and family, if you'd care to look. http://www.srh.noaa.gov/ifps/MapClick.php?MapType=3&site=lix&CiTemplate=1&map.x=1 79&map.y=157 This includes webcams in the New Orleans area: http://www.nola.com/ and this is the hurricane site there in New Orleans: http://www.nola.com/hurricane/ |

Well I couldn't stand the suspense or worry, and called her. They are still at home right now but have that option if she can get her Mom and Sister to go to George's work location. They are deciding whether to leave or stay early tomorrow. They have to be able to get across a bridge, and the plus side is they are behind a secondary levee (a big hill they build to keep the rivers back I understand,) if they can't leave. She is being funny as usual, you know Karen, and she said, "I laughed at the lady next door who said, "When I saw the witch was taking in her plants I knew I had to evacuate!" Karen claims she has always left her plants up before, so it scared her neighbour I guess. I know they are scared too, and everyone in the household is getting ready for a big one. I told her I would call her tomorrow for an update, at home or mobile, as we were all worried about her. I also wondered about Toerag? Isn't he in the line of fire too? Karen said, she would try to get online and check in with everyone, but I read her all your caring comments. Hate to see a distraught Viking. ![]() Karen: If you do come on, they may open up the Superdome, maybe worth looking into? http://www.nola.com/newslogs/weather/ Because the storm is so big, Nagin said, the Superdome may be used as a shelter of last resort for people who have no cars, with city bus pick-up points around New Orleans. |

and most of that was pretty accurate, too!*laughing* smiles and hugs thank you, Sharon! ![]() and thanks all, and please know we're doing all we're able to do for the time being. And, I just had to say this, soulfisher? I am a cajun, as staunch and ready as any viking. But we took a vote, and we (the cajun) all decided that after that nasty little Canadian exodus (we prefer "exodus" to "exile") we decide when to leave. and um, yep, most of us figger that time may be about now-- ![]() we decide that, for sure, tomorrow. In the meantime there are things to be done and we're doing 'em. It's not a party lovie. No offense meant, it's just not. And thanks Mike, for checking in. and m'vilya....? ![]() and damn ya'll are good. thanks ta for now... ![]() |

I just woke up and hey...it's a category five. Mother Nature has a royal flush. I think it's time we toss the cards and get the hell out. sigh This is hard for me, (I've never left before) but harder will be convincing my mother--cause I ain't going without her! ( |

Category Five Karen! Get the HECK to a safe place. Get some rope and hog-tie your mama to your vehicle and get too safety!! The outerbands should start hitting later today and then it may be too late. PLEASE take shelter. This could be a massive hurricane for this area..and don't forget the repurcussions inland afterwards..there will be a great chance of tornadoes all the way up the middle of the US as the storm moves upward. Time to GO! I'll be praying for you all. |

Okay...They are all safely on their way to Houston. Karen, George, the kids, and dog are currently enroute on the expressway, which is bumper to bumper as everyone has the same idea to get out of Dodge, but once they get onto Highway 90 and onto the 190 she says it will be moving faster. Her cats she is hoping find a good high place as she couldn't find them. Her Mama and Sister decided to go too so they are all on their way to Houston. I laughed at G though, he is the worried one this time, and he said, he would have left anyway. ![]() This is the one they have feared all their lives and decided to get in the car and boogie. Her brother has booked two rooms in Houston for the family members, but she seems to think they may not be able to return for a couple of weeks as the radio is stating, and if that's the case they have family in Houston. Glory Be! They are as Karen says, "We are on our way to safe hon, and yes you can call, but just not every hour!" ![]() |

I talked to Twist's son, Shane, on the phone about 30 minutes or so ago... He's riding out the storm at their house, but Twist and her mom had left about 30 minutes before I called... probably traveling with K and her family, I would imagine... I'll be talking with him later tonight, and hopefully with Twist too, so will keep you posted as I have new info... Right now?... As Sharon said, prayers are needed and appreciated for Karen, Twist and all those evacuating, as well as Shane and others who are staying behind... and yep... am sayin' a prayer for K's cats too... ![]() |

All of their family, including cats... and prayers for those who couldn't leave wouldn't hurt. We've got friends in Houston, and they're expecting some backlash as well. Just not as deep. |

I am not sure if I can post this (as it was done by someone else,) and if not, then feel free to remove it. I found both these items and felt that I would like do something for Karen that she herself believed in, and had to turn to other sources for that. For Serenity's family enroute and at home, as well as all those walking in fear down there right now, if I may a little prayer to bless them all and keep them safe. I found this at beliefnet.com, done by Silvermoon 2. http://www.beliefnet.com/milestones/commemoration.asp?milestonetypeid=6&milestoneid=1 9747 ![]() Mother Goddess I call to you, Loving Goddess hear my plea. Well...Karen and her family have only gotten within 10 miles of Crowley and figure it is best to get off the highway before it hits at least. They have a friend that will let them use their "trailer!", but I am trying to find better accommodation in Crowley right now for them on the phone. The traffic is just barely moving, George is exhausted from driving since early this morning, and if you look at the map even the location they are in to me is not safe enough yet to be stopping. Twist, and her Mom are in a different car, and she has no idea where they are right now either. Maybe Vicky will inform us if she hears, and I can let Karen know? Update: 6:30 p.m. PST - Talked to a lot of motels and hotels, nothing anywhere even as far as in Houston, which is what they figured anyway. Karen said to tell you all she appreciated your prayers and thoughts, and that they are a little depressed and a LOT tired, so they are going to take up on their friends offer to stay in his trailer tonight to get some rest, and depending on what tomorrow brings - go from there. I will call her back and let her know when I have news of Twist and her Mom from Vicky hopefully later. May they please all be kept safe out of harm's way. I wish I could help, Sharon... but I don't know where Twist and mom are... I talked to Shane a little over an hour ago, and he hadn't heard anything from them yet... so right now, I'm impatiently waiting for word that they're all safe... When I know something more, I'll certainly pass it on to everyone... but right now?.. all we can do is wait and pray... |

Oh dear, I really hope no harm will come to them. Can't imagine what it's like to be in these huge hurricanes. Biggests storms overhere are about 10 to 12 beaufort, wich is heavy, but not nearly as heavy as a hurricane size 5 I think. Must be very frightening to leave everything behind, not knowing if and how to see it back. Thanks Sharon for taking the effort to help them and keeping us posted. Holding everyone close with a prayer and a hug. Weatherwise, we are high and dry here in Oregon, hoping for an inch or two of rain maybe tomorrow, as we haven't had more than a sprinkle since early July, which rare for this area. Crowley isn't very far...that scares me. We are already getting some winds and rain here now...with a forecast of gusts up to 100mph tomorrow...60-80 tonight we already have the tide over the seawall here and flooding in some areas I hope we all make it through this okay. I know, Bri... I've been talking to Shane some more, and he still hasn't heard from Twist and mom... I'm supposed to be getting a call once he hears from her, and I will let y'all know when that happens... Meanwhile, I'm worried about Shane too... This one looks like it's going to do some major damage (and that's putting it lightly)... and they're saying it's potentially the worst storm to hit the U.S.... EVER! Please keep the positive thoughts and prayers going, folks... they are much needed... |

8:12 p.m. PST Well...The more I read you guys the more worried I was getting ![]() Twist and her Mom have the number to get in touch with them so she is just assuming they are fine, and in the same mess of traffic as they are in. She heard the hurricane had shifted a bit that perhaps her property will not be hit as hard as they thought or they are hoping that anyway. I am still trying to find a room in Crowley for them as they really would prefer that if there is one to the trialer, but no luck yet, so off I go. As for Shane - Karen doesn't know why he stayed behind. The rest of her family is also all heading to Houston to stay with relatives there. |

I feel for all involved. I understand the traffic problem. When we had to go from here, just south of St.Augustine, we took ten hours to get to Tallahasse. We got there about three in the morning and the church we were sent to was filled and we had to find another one. Not a great experience.I am so happy she has friends and can use their trailor tonight. love and prayers to them all. marty jo [This message has been edited by latearrival (08-29-2005 01:12 AM).] |

Driving to work, this place looks like a ghost town...nowhere to stop to get anything to eat, no convenience stores open, it's weird. Thanks Vicky, Brian, Marty, and all...I'm pretty sure we'll be okay over here...I'm just worried about Karen and family and here she was a couple days ago worried about ME...geez |

They've lowered the category to 4, and the storm seems to be weakening slightly. If anyone hears from Twist and Mom, please let us know. [This message has been edited by Sunshine (08-29-2005 07:01 AM).] |

Just saw where the majority of the windows in the huge Hyatt hotel downtown N.O. have been blown out. Category 4 is still catastrophic, unfortunately. Dixie, you be safe there - thoughts are with you, too ![]() |

I haven't been online this weekend... been glued to the tube trying to figure out how to dump enough ice cubes into the Gulf to make Katrina fizzle. *S* But Serenity and others have been constantly in my thoughts... They should be fine in Crowley... the mileage isn't quite so important as which side of the hurricane they're on... and Crowley is west. My sister and her family are in New Iberia (a little east of Crowley) and they're okay... so Karen and her folks should be... Stay safe, my friends... all of you. |

5:30 a.m. PST - Well Serenity and her family did make it to Crowley, and are all fine it seems, and I will check with them later on. I couldn't get to sleep, but they did. ![]() Dixie, stay safe now too, and everyone in this horrible hurricane may you all be safe. I can't imagine even what this must be like, and just pray for you all. Sad the underground pumps in New Orleans are not working (they require those to pump out the water that is coming in - so early in the game - this is not a good thing.) I don't know if Twist and her Mom are with Karen or not yet as I got her son up this morning when I called. I felt badly about waking him up so didn't ask too much, but will probably know more later on. ![]() |

Here is a link to a local station WDSU, that will keep you up on the New Orleans area, (Vicky and I are watching this one she found last night.) Sad, the Superdome now has no power meaning no air-conditioning for all those poor people. I just pray they will all make it through this ordeal. http://www.wdsu.com/video/4907831/detail.html |

Well... I woke up Sunday and immediately emailed Karen to come to Jax (via my cell phone because I don't have a working computer at home right now)... Then I proceeded to worry until noon, at which time I felt safe in calling Duncan (whom I was sure was sleeping in). I practically begged Dunc to get online and tell me what was going on.. So thank you for this thread and thank you Duncan for keeping me posted. I would have went out of my mind worrying about Karen and her family.. Now I worry in a more general sense... for everyone there. "too bad ignorance isn't painful" |

Just heard from Twist, and she and mom kept going last night, and they are safe in Houston... Thank God! They drove for 16 hours to get there, but I'm just SO happy and relieved to know that they are okay... I pray that Karen and family, and Shane, and all others in the area are safe as well... And, yep Marge... they are having to move people from one area of the superdome to another part of the building... not good. Some of the people who are in there are wanting to leave and go somewhere else, but they are, of course, being advised not to do so. Again... positive thoughts and prayers for all concerned... |

From Netscape news.. already extensive flooding in New Orleans.. ``I'm not doing too good right now,'' Chris Robinson said via cellphone from his home east of the city's downtown. ``The water's rising pretty fast. I got a hammer and an ax and a crowbar, but I'm holding off on breaking through the roof until the last minute. Tell someone to come get me please. I want to live.'' ![]() Love's a lovely lad |

Well, it sounds like the panic is starting... I'm watching/listening to the local New Orleans coverage, and the reports say that more and more people are trying to leave the shelters... Some are leaving due to concerns over damage to the shelter buildings, and others are just thinking that they can go back home... Prayers, indeed... |

Glad to hear that those we know are in a safer area ... there will be much worry still~ One report says that a levee has broken in the New Orleans area ... already the flooding shown is immense~ Over 100 windows blown out of the Hyatt Regency Hotel ... and facades being blown off of old historic buildings~ There will be so much more damage before this one is over, affecting lives for such a long time to come~ |

So true, Marge... There has been a lot of damage already, and I had heard about the levee too... This is a bad one, and they are saying that New Orleans will likely never be the same... |

I didn't know Dixie was in Danger, where is she???? Thank you Sharon and bless you for the updates...thank God Karen and her family made it out. Well, I can't get a connection yet to Karen and her family, but perhaps if they are already going further towards Houston I will eventually, and will let you all know. I am shocked at the looters in New Orleans even in this state of emergency there is still greed it seems. I am sure praying for all those stuck in this. It is sure very, very sad, and extremely frightening to someone who has never experienced any such disaster. May God or whomever they believe in be with them all. Here is a link that seems to have good coverage if you care to watch what's up in Alabama, and Mississippi from WKRP. http://www.wkrg.com/ Here is their hurricane site: http://www.wkrg.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=WKRG/Page/KRG_Package&packname=HurricaneCenter |

Hey! *tired snoopy dance* Me, the hubby and kids are safe and dry, and enjoying the good old fashioned southern hospitality of our friends here in Crowley. We're watching the news with much dismay, and trying to map out our next step. And wow, vicky? You found my mother before I did! And no, I haven't heard from any of my nephews--the circuits are busy and we can't get through yet. We understand that the levees have been breeched in certain areas, but it's a complicated system, so we still don't know anything yet. (Somebody's breech is at times, a blessing for others as it alleviates the pressure.) Thanks all so much, for your prayers and well wishes--and here in Crowley, being to the left of the storm, we are prolly better off than Dixie at this point. Stay safe, friends. I'll be in touch when I am able. Love to all. I'm gonna go have some cofee and see which way we'll be going. Stay tuned with Mysteria. She can find me anywhere, that one. ![]() and sigh...this is a hard day. ![]() |

((((((Karen!)))))) It's sooooo good to hear from you, my friend... Glad to know that you're all safe and dry... I've been watching the local New Orleans coverage, as much as possible, and it's looking like it's taking quite a hit... I hope your place makes it through without any severe damage... As far as Twist and Mom go?... I didn't actually 'find' them... I TRIED... but the last time I talked to Shane, he still hadn't heard from them... Eventually, though, Twist checked in at ASoTS... so that's how I 'found' 'em... *smile* I'm just so glad you're all safe..that's all that matters is that everyone in Katrina's path is safe... As far as your nephews go?.. I've tried to call and check on Shane this morning, but haven't been able to get through either... so am still praying that he, and his brother, both make it through the storm safely... Hugging you tight, lady... Stay safe... I love you... ![]() |

The reports of flooding are sounding pretty bad... A Parish official for St. Bernard Parish has reportedly said that there is 15 to 20 feet of water throughout the parish... That report came from here... There are also reports of an apartment building collapsing, with people inside, in Terrytown, which is just to the southeast of New Orleans... I found that report here... They still need lots of prayers there, as well as in other areas being hit... ![]() |

Glad all are safe, so far.. Also keep those in prayer who are still going to recieve extensive rain and flooding, even as it moves north. The area from which I am from (southern WV) still has people living in government housing from flooding last year, and there was more flooding a few weeks ago in teh area, and it looks like they are in the path also.. Unfortunately, this storm will affect many of us directly. Lets all stay safe.. don't let concurn for property override your lives! Let your car go, don't stay in your home if it is unsafe.. Everyone? She is still unleashed. Please please get away from it: Mississippi, Tennesse, Alabama, FL . . . check your stations. May she pass right by you. ____________________________________________ The National Hurricane Center projected Katrina would head north and turn toward the northeast, carrying its center through Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio on Tuesday and Wednesday, then Ontario and possibly western New York state. |

wow! gotta tell you guys that you all nearly have better coverage than the weather channel! *smile* Checking in while I can snag the puter from my brother, but just wanted to thank you all for the prayers and well wishes... The love and caring here is phenomonal... Just talked to K and she's gonna stay another nite with a possible 'long term' solution until the get the water pumped out, elect back, etc.. which could be quite a while before any of that happens.. *sigh* also? my brother just talked to my son Shane and? all is well.. he fared very well and? no damage to the house! *gasp* anyway, this started out to be a short note and I really do have to have to go... but vic? please feel free to pass this along to ASoTS for me, will ya? love to all of you... ~twist oh! and the rest of you guys still in the path? Twist - thanks for the update, and I guess that means Karen's houses are okay too? I can't get through to her at all now, but I am not worrying about you guys as much as before now that you are all safe. *laughing* Today I am geting more info about my life on Pip than I am through the phone. (Shar? The cell lines are almost impossible and even local calls are having trouble keeping up with the overload due to the emergency.) Our nephew Shawn has also checked in, and although they are inches away from flood waters entering the house, so far, so good. and *twist*? Great news, about Shane and the old homestead. Check in when you hear from the other vagabond son, k? I love you! I can't express enough my gratitude to the network here at Pip, and these wonderful people who have extended their hospitality to us so very generously. My kids are in a bit of culture shock, as is the hubby--"Look! There's a horse!" only to hear, "um, technically that's a mule..." ![]() But yanno? I could get used to this. live coverage of damage from the air in New Orleans being shown now. http://www.wdsu.com/video/4909353/detail.html Just so very sad the devastating damage to some areas. Watched a rescue of a poor man who must have made it out through his chimney, makes you cry seeing these homes under water. I am just so grateful those I know were spared this type of loss, and can't express enough my sympathy to all those that were hit with any loss or damage. Bless them all and heal them from this terrible hurricane. I sure wish we could hear from other folks in the line of this intense hurricane. If anyone has word on Toerag, Dixie, or any of our friends in the path, please post something, anything. We will all be feeling the force of this one for a bit I am sure. |

Hi Everyone ![]() we just got power back on here at work. 109,000 are still without right now so I feel lucky. We felt more of the impact of this storm than I thought we would. We have some major flooding, roads closed, trees and power lines down...a curfew is in effect. The winds are still kicking up pretty good even this late (9:15pm) I don't really know what all is going on right now, just got power up and was sleeping most of the day since I got off work at 7am and had to be back in at 5pm. But I skimmed through the thread here and I am so glad that Karen and family are all okay. Very relieved! I'd have felt better if they'd have made it to Houston, but I can imagine the traffic jams too. I'm not sure if we aren't letting anyone in but residents...they will usually do that in just the beach areas like Navarre, Gulf Breeze, and Pensacola Beach, to keep out looters, but I don't think the whole city is boarded up and not letting people in... from what I've seen so far, we've suffered moderate damage, but nothing anywhere near what others are facing right now, so keep on praying. jo, Mike, Sharon, Lee, Marge, Sue: thank you each for mentioning me here and for your prayers and concern. It really means a lot in a time like this to know people are thinking about ya ![]() Thanks to everyone... [This message has been edited by passing shadows (08-29-2005 11:21 PM).] |

The news just keeps getting worse... An official in Mississippi has said that there are at least 50 confirmed deaths, just in Harrison County, alone... Katrina will be devestating to so many... |

I'm pretty tired folks. And it's going to be a long, hard, haul. As of right now, the greater new orleans metropolitan area is under martial law due to the obvious dangers of the this situation. We are grateful to be alive, of course, but now we have to get our nephews out of there. The roads are blocked to even emergency crews--live wires are down in still flooded streets, trees and debris and as far as I am aware, the pumps that drain this standing water are in disrepair (pumping station lost their roof)and the tap water is contaminated due to a break in the water main. So even if my family was miraculously unscathed, our neighbors sadly, got hit hard. (and I'll have to see our houses to believe there was no damage, too.) It may be a long time before we're allowed to return. And I would like my nephews with me. My family has been extremely fortunate (an understatement I think, miraculously blessed is more like it) but please continue prayers for all of the gulf coast areas affected. We were and remain fortunate to have resources not available to many other families who remain in distress. Please remember them with donations to the Red Cross, who does a fine job of finding those who are most needy. Donations of clothing, canned goods, well, just contact them, they'll tell you what is most needed. As for me and the crew? We're looking for a place with a pool, that likes dogs. ![]() And please continue prayers, as the body counts have only begun, and tomorrow's light will prove the true enormity of this catastrophe. I may be on the road tomorrow, but I'll check in when I'm able. And twist? I know you have to be getting edgy, and if it is true we'll be homeless for awhile, we're going to have to get together. I miss you. ![]() Hug mom for me. (I know she'll cringe but do it anyway, k?) nite, folks...and thank you for your prayers. (and Reb? It's fine with me if you just brush your teeth left handed instead. (chuckle) dream sweet good poets |

I feel so sick jo jo. CNN has just reported that there are people in the 9th ward area still trapped on roofs and attics, and their cries for help have to go unheeded for the time being, as rescue operations have been suspended due to the dangers of working in the dark. Private citizens who own boats are working to do what they can to assist. And it gets worse, CNN also reported a breech in the levee system of Lake Ponchartrain (which happens to be ABOVE sea level) so as you can imagine, water levels in the streets of new orleans are rising again, at about the rate of an inch an hour. University Hospital (otherwise known as "Charity" Hospital) may be forced to evacuate, as well as Tulane Medical Center. There seems to be no end and I feel heartbroken and helpless right now. I'm praying this is all misinformation. But then? I've been hoping my entire life this year was just a bad dream too. somebody wake me... and spiked? If you can read this, check in, will ya? Call G on his cell. I'm worried. |

Karen, I've been watching CNN, too. The news is grim, but I guess it could be much worse. It is a catastrophe for sure. I just heard that the ambulances cannot even get to the hospital. No matter what we think about being in control of our own lives (or not), nature always has a way of showing us who the boss really is, huh? Anyhow, Sugar....you get some rest. I'll stay on vigil for ya, k? ![]() |

there's not going to be any sleep now. That last update reported an inch every FIVE minutes. The breech is a two block radius. I think I shouldn't even look back, jo. I may turn into a pillar of salt. |

Karen?... I thought I was going to make it an early night tonight... and I did try... but, though I'm tired, I couldn't sleep... and something was nagging me to check back in here... Now I know why... I'm pulling up the live coverage again, and will be watching and listening... I am so grateful that you, Twist, and your whole family were spared... and yes.. it truly IS a miracle... I hope you're able to get your nephews out soon... and I do continue to pray for so many others that are still feeling the wrath of Katrina... Thank you for continuing to check in as you can... Love you, my sis... ![]() |

Sister Misc'e and my Mom and the rest of the family all live in the Ohio Valley. I'm hoping it doesn't get too bad there. Looks like it is slowing down some but it is still scheduled to dump a lot more rain. They live in the part of Ohio that's dubbed tornado alley. My heart is breaking for so many that it is not fathomable really ... heard a reporter on CNN earlier tonight and she could not hold back her tears talking about hearing people crying for help and not being able to do anything for them. |

I hear ya, iliana... it truly is heartbreaking... I had been watching the live feed from wdsu.com, most of the day... and all 3 of the anchors were getting choked up when they were showing the devestation in the New Orleans area... and especially so, when they were showing video of some of the rescues... One of them just couldn't hold back the tears and finally took a break for awhile... My heart goes out to everyone concerned... and Karen?... yes...try and get some sleep... Love you... ![]() |

Yep... that's about all we can do... be grateful.. and pray for others who are not so fortunate... but no... I'm not in that area... I'm in Phoenix... and the only 'family' that I have who are affected by this are Karen, Twist and the rest of their families... Like I said, though... my heart goes out to all concerned... they are ALL in my thoughts and prayers... Am listening to the live local coverage now, and it sounded bad enough when I signed off earlier... but now?... well... I just pray... |

There's Dix - was VERY worried about you. ![]() If anyone CAN help, here is a link and phone number to helping people in the midst of Katrina: http://www.redcross.org/ Financial donations are the best, but we all know, not everyone can do this, including me, so I will do the rest. The best that I can. The Red Cross is looking for large, bulk wrapped donations of single products or more instead of clothes and items due to the cost of packaging, etc. It is better to go to a local BJ's or Sam's Club, purchase bulk items and contact your local. You can donate money, food, time, etc, there is also a toll free # there to call. This link is for items, food, clothing, spare change, there are coinstar machines at your local grocery stores: http://www.redcross.org/donate/donateinkind.html Contact your local chapter, they will guide you from there. On the site, just enter your zip to find your local. http://www.redcross.org/where/where.html They are also looking for unused airline miles. http://www.redcross.org/donate/donatemiles.html This is for physical relief aid at the site, you only need to be over 17 with a valid drivers lic, training is provided: http://redcross.volunteermatch.org/results/opp_detail.jsp?oppid=41926 They are also looking for medical supplies and drug donations (from pharmaceuticals only) for the ill. I will contact the hospitals here, I am sure they are well on their way. Karen and Twist? Forces greater than us got you guys out of there, it will get the rest of your family out too. I saw the devestation, I was just sick to my stomach. Am just glad you are not there, in the middle of it, although, I , too, would be sickened at watching, I had to stop. ![]() May nature grant the rest of you peace and drive this force to rest. As for everyone else in the middle of this? A dry, good morning to you and here is hoping that today, she gets tired beating the land up for a day. If I could give everything I own or my time, I would and if ANYONE needs help. My email is here. Just ask. I will do whatever I am able. Believe in yourselves. Be smart and know you are all loved. Candles constantly lit, If I am able to find anything you need - just let me know. Please - if anyone hears any news from others, please post. I will be busy getting aid to everyone I can. They should really list bottle return on that site, a lot of people don't even have spare change, you know? [This message has been edited by littlewing (08-30-2005 08:52 AM).] |

While the "bad" news is abounding all over the path of destruction, the news is nothing but smiles here with our friends and family on PIP... I am more greatful that most away from here could imagine at the reports from everyone. I would like to heartily second Sue's request for aid with the Red Cross, and all of the other organizations that it's going to take to get everyone through this. I am on call for the disaster for my local Red Cross (being a 3 year member of the disaster relief team). I don't know if they are going to be calling for people from this area, however if they do, I will get you guys on the ground reports from the scene. Continued prayers are greatfully accepted on the vitims behalf. http://www.mysticwicks.com |

Please forgive me folks, for using the forum as my telephone, but the circuits are busy, and I'm having trouble contacting my family. (That means you too, Mysteria, "all circuits busy" here.) Twist? If you can get in touch with Shane (I tried last night and couldn't get through) tell him to get Shawn, and try to make their way to Waggaman. (Shawn is in bad spirits after riding out the storm, and apparently although most of the streets in the Terrytown area are less flooded, the intersections make car travel impossible. (Shawn said the car sits too low to navigate the flood waters.) Highway 90 may still be passable, and hopefully we can at least meet up here, before we figure out how to meet up with you and Mom. (Mark is taking a leave of absence and will probably head this way, unless we head north--we're still trying to find a suite somewhere.) Although our homes are still there services are obviously unavailable--so for health and safety reasons, they should both evacuate anyway. I'm having trouble getting through on the phone, so try to call us, k? And God bless you Ron, for this place--Pip has truly been shelter from the storm for me and my family. ![]() and yeah, my head hurts. sigh... thanks again folks...and hugging Dixie too. It's truly a nightmare. oh and twist? here's a smile for you--we did get a call from "Brother" Tim--who is apparently somewhere in Baton Rouge--he wanted to know if we were going to charge him for rent this month. *grin* I shoulda told him yes, just to torment him, but I didn't have the heart. ![]() love to all and? ![]() sigh--I pray everyone is safe. |

Karen?... I know I'm not Twist, but I know she's not getting to check in very often right now... so it could be awhile before she sees your message... In the meantime, if you'd like me to try and call Shane for you, I will be more than happy to do that... It may take me awhile to reach him, but I will keep trying until I finally do contact him... Either that, or if you want to e-mail me with a number where I can call Twist to pass on your message, that would work too... I'm here... and will do whatever I can to help... just let me know what you need from me... Love you, Karen... ![]() |

Just this morning, my church and a local raido station have gotten together to organize a collection of needed items for the families displaced by this devastation. One of the drives will coordinate collecting items that parents need for the care of infants and toddlers ... re: diapers, forumula, baby food, clothing, blankets and yes, even comforting snuggle toys for the children~ We solicted the assistance of several of the large chain stores in this area to donate needed items ... and two of the morning crew of an Orlando radio station have been given the go ahead from their boss to drive the articles collected to a meeting point with the National Red Cross for delivery and distribution of the items gathered~ Thanking the good Lord for all of those able to help out in this time of great need~ I know what it meant to those of us in Florida last year who had needs ... and the gratefulness to those who provided it forged some lifelong friendships~ Just heard on the radio that many of the local motorcycle club members and the motorcycle dealerships are really working to gather items needed also~ |

I just walked in and can't believe the wonderful communication going on at PiP. So glad everyone got out safely. The pictures on the TV are beyond unbelievable. So many people stranded on roof tops and tons left homeless. Guess the Super Dome was not such a good idea. Love to Karen and her family and all others who live in the area. hugs, Marti “The garden is inimical to all evil passions; it stands for efficiency, for patience in labor, for strength in adversity, for the power to forgive.” |

Talk about an emergency response team! The Pipsters move faster than the IRC. The world's leaders could watch this group and learn a lesson or two...I mean it! |

Mystreria, two hands clapping for your great effort. Looks like it paid off. What a wonderful friend you are. Serenity, So glad you contacted the boys. Last I heard the trucks are lined up and had not been able to get in with supplies. Red cross needs money more than anything else so they can get what they need. Best for us to just contact them or send them a check if we can.Water, canned goods all that. They will need bodies to work and help too. I hope the boys can find a way to you. Prayers from all are still with you. Glad to hear someone heard from Toe. Worried about him too. love, martyjo [This message has been edited by latearrival (08-30-2005 04:56 PM).] |

Okay! Here's my update--Shane and Shawn are now West of Baton Rouge. (Everybody say "Yay!") And I'm sure you've heard from Duane, but Mark said he talked to him--he's still in Mobile, but he is fine. (Everybody say "Hell YAY!") We're waiting here for Mark, who should be here some time late tonight. (And Mysteria is wonderful, isn't she?) And tell Royce this isn't a chat room, it's a very FAST message board. grin But anyhow, I'll keep trying the phones, (I just did again) but we are waiting to group up with all the guys who are still enroute before we decide what we do. And believe it or not, Mark's brother Joey rode out the hurricane offshore on a rig, so we will prolly be staying in his trailer, since he's still out there and still working. And if all of this sounds like I'm don't know what is going on, it's 'cause I don't. All I know is we are all accounted for, finally, and we got the hell outta dodge. *collective exhale* Thanks Pip, thanks twist, (thanks Royce ![]() (Now hmmm...we may be talkin' bout renting a house...we just dunno what the next step is right now.) and thank you all, and yes, Mysteria, I'm not sure who, but somebody will use that room! ![]() ta for now...I'm going to go watch CNN and nod, weep a bit. I love you Mom. *smooch* |

Sharon, you are the gem I knew you were! Marge...sounds like your team's in place. Karen & Twist -- Thank God the boys are bound your way now. Keeping my fingers crossed for your cat, Twist. If either of you end up in Houston, let me know.....maybe I have clothes or something that might help...k? Karen not sure you have my phone but you can get the business phone on the net at www.ettrialreports.com if you need to get ahold of me if there is anything I can do. So far so good for my Mom and Misc'e in the Ohio Valley...Mom said it really stormed this morning. Maybe it's over? Still have heard nothing from Carla but I understand there is no power, are no cell phone towers....so I don't know when I'll be able to find out about her. She basically has no family and I do not have any way to find her. Thanks ya'all for keeping her in your prayers. Kacy -- you're right. Ron created a miracle when he created PIP. Vicky -- glad to know you're on safe ground. What would K & T do without ya, huh! Love you all.......jo |

Twist, Karen, Reb has a great idea there! What if we look for a big enough house to rent for all of ya? http://www.rent.com/account/ (apartments, condos) http://www.rentclicks.com/default.asp?ws=418 (houses) You would think in Houston with that heat they would be cheap to rent? Less than having hotel rooms, but wonder if they have air-conditioning. I love house-hunting, so if I may be of service, I actually was in Houston once, and just so happen to know where the shopping malls are ![]() It's all coming together and Bri is so right, things could have been way more serious than this, and the main thing is you all have each other. I guarantee you the cats are okay, trust me - those animals will do anything waiting to be fed! ![]() Let me know if there anything I can help with, glad to oblige, especially house hunting. |

Martie, you are so cute! The hotel is cancelled already (cancellation number is the same as booking number she said,) and already I am looking at houses with pools, and air-conditioning. Lord knows in Houston, you need both! A good shopping mall close helps too as no one seems to walk there and I didn't drive! I can recall when I was there they didn't even have sidewalks on the streets where I was staying, imagine! The person I was visiting couldn't believe I walked! The Houston Chronicle has a good online rental tool as well. http://www.chron.com/class/homes/har/lease.html |

Ok this is very cool: I spoke with Judith - Communications Rep for Red Cross WNY Chapter - she is contacting the IT Dept and the Media regarding exactly what has been going on here at PIP and how families are being led to one another and how people are helping each other here. They said the Red Cross has nothing like this. Tomorrow, I am going to be contacted by the Communications and Media Dept to see exactly what can be done through the Red Cross for communication like this during disasters. Right now, the only communication they can give is through military, unfortunately, but she will see what happens tomorrow. As far as the boards go, they were so impressed and ecstatic because most of the Red Cross cannot even get through to anyone because of phone lines, etc. She said most of the Red cross vehicles can hardly get through anyplace, it is so so sad. She went into detail, which I will not. She was amazed that all of us were able to get people together through the internet and the Director of Red Cross IT is contacting me tomorrow, as well as the Media for Red Cross. People? YOU are all amazing and this here? Is amazing and Ron? You should be VERY proud of what you have here - it just may get more attention than you thought. Karen and Twist? I tried to get some other means of communication for all of you to SPEAK to another but as of tonight, only military can do that. Unless someone there is IN or was IN the military. Vicky has something AMAZING to post soon. We have done wonderful things here. Everyone should be very proud of themselves. And 2 extremely brave women. And a lot of loving hearts. ![]() [This message has been edited by littlewing (08-31-2005 05:17 PM).] |

Well, Sue?... I don't know how 'amazing' it is... but I'm just heartbroken for all those affected by Katrina... not only those we know and love, but so many others as well... and well?... I just HAD to try and do something... ANYTHING... to help... It's not much... but if it can help even one family find each other... and stay in touch?... or help one person learn more about his or her home?... or if it gives one person the idea to help with donations or by volunteering?.. then it will be more than worth it... This is still in the beginning stages... There is more to come...but here's what there is so far... http://raynedaycreations.com/katrina/phpBB/index.php Please, if you know of ANYONE who might find it useful, please do not hesitate to pass the link along... The man says, "A home without a wall, Our haven without ends, A circle we all call Our Family of Friends!" He is sure good to his word! I would like to acknowledge Sue for giving Ron's site the credit it deserves, and for her effort in bringing it to the attention of the Red Cross. This is a place of refuge in both good and bad times, poetic or silent times, and definitely a place to come to when you need a hand up, a friend, or just read for company. We have ALL done our part by supporting those less fortunate right now by just sticking together as one supportive "family" and holding hands all together and giving them our love. Okay - I hush now, and stand by for any further instructions. Oh! Just saw Vicky's work, great job Vicky, just great! |

picking my jaw up off the floor after watching aerial footage of Gulfport/Biloxi...there has never been anything like this in our lifetimes..... I understand Hattiesburg took a substantial hit too... worried about Laurel because it was in the direct path as well... and for all the souls left in NO.. the hell has just begun -- anything we can do via Red Cross or otherwise is surely incumbent on the rest of us...it's going to take a lot of hands to clean up |

If Karen and Twist are looking for a house in Houston....there are plenty. Rents are not cheap though. We rented a three bedroom in SugarLand for $900 in 1994....sure it'd be $1200 now. When we moved into this one it was $1200 a month. Might be able to find something a little further out...in the $1000 range; I'd try the Spring/Cyprus area where you get more for your money AND IT'S ON HIGHER GROUND! Sharon, you would not believe Houston now....lol. I came here in the early '80 and it was big then. Now, it sprawls for miles and miles and miles. There used to be a long way between the suburbs....there is no empty space now. Apartments might be a good way to go in that it is possible to rent long term "corporate" type hotel suites which offer the pool idea, as well. It really is not a place you would swim all year though. It does actually freeze here, and last year we actually saw two days with snow flakes! Winters are definitely not like up north, tho' lol!! There's always Galveston where swimming is free, too, and they don't close that "pool" on Labor Day. Most pools (in the homeowners areas....which is how Houston communities are arranged) open on Memorial Day and shut down on Labor Day. There are not as many homes here with pools as I had thought when I first came...not to say, you can't find one....just not that easy because of the community associations' offering them. Anyhow, just a little info to chew on. Yep, Spring / Cyrus area is good. If you need to be on the bus lines, that is too far, though. Katy is also a good area and I think Metro still goes out that way. Hang in there ya'all! ![]() |

Sharon....and yes, shopping is everywhere now! Since there is no zoning here....stores are everywhere. Sharon, you wouldn't believe the growth! Also, you can't live in Houston in the summer without A/C....all houses have them with the exception of those in the 4th ward, possibly. Still thinking about different areas of the city --Pasadena's cheaper, too....but pollution is pretty bad there. |

The videos shown on the news channels are disturbing...and in some ways uplifting. The down side will always be with us but I am glad that the good in people shines through. For every looter shown stealing, there is someone willing to give the shirt off their back..a place in their home..anything! to help out. It's going to be a long haul for those displaced by the storm and it's aftermath. Let's not make this thread a one time deal. Let's continue to see who/what we can help with. Okay, Twist... Glad ya re-registered... but don't know what the problem is with logging in... The boards are set up from a built-in software on the server... so I don't have any control over those particular links... Only over the content of the boards... the headings and such... and, of course, moderating the boards and such... but will check things on this end and see if all is working for me Thanks for the heads-up ![]() |

I can post here without being a registered member? Wow! I was thinking about Karen..... serenity... worried... watching the news. I haven't read through this whole thread yet. I emailed Ron to get Karen's email address since the one I currently have doesn't seem to work any more and he directed me to this thread and told me Karen was fine. I feel more serene now, knowing. Just stopped by to tell you I was concerned, Karen, and I'm so pleased to know you and your family are safe. I'll read the whole thread now. Thank you, Ron, for directing me here. As Ed, I have been attempting to stay in the corner and keep quiet, however I have got to jump up and down in the middle of the room for a second and say just exactly how proud I am of everyone on here, and especially in this thread... You can tell the type of people you are dealing with when an emergency strikes... adn I think we have seen the best that PIP has to offer. To borrow a phrase from my friend Noah... Thank you, jojo... and no... I don't know anything about those areas... but feel free to post your question here too... http://raynedaycreations.com/katrina/phpBB/index.php and maybe someone will come along who does... Also.. I'm really not very familiar with the Mississippi area, so if there is not already a board for that covers the area you're referring to, please let me know and I will add one... I am trying to make the boards as complete and helpful as possible, so all suggestions are welcome... |

shaking my head with a late night (early morning?) message for twist-- Shawn & Shane couldn't get through on the cell phones to get directions so they stopped in Breaux Bridge for the night. (a friend of Shawn's) And now we're all thinking about maybe a cabin in Arkansas. ![]() We don't know what we wanna do yet, but we want ya to come! Arkansas....I think we're all so exhausted we're losing what's left of our minds. Might as well tho. No tellin' what else is lost. ![]() c'est la vie and see ya soon, I hope. and to my pipfamily, I'm not sure if I'll have pc access, so if you don't hear from me, I may just be taking pictures of my feet propped up on the dash of the truck. (I don't know how, but that always seems to happen on road trips.) ![]() Markman the Vagabond just got in so NOW maybe mommy Karen can get some sleep. everybody but me is all tucked in. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz love you all... as I watched and browsed all the news stations last evening, well, words cannot describe how overwhelming the rescuses, those completely lost and in states of shock...those who have lost loved ones, and the rising numbers of those who did not make it. I so want to do something other then simply send money...and wondering where all those people are going to go...then I thought, if they're anything like Karen, they will somehow, someway survive. It's going to be long and hard, but in the end, will lives. Thank you all for this thread as.... then to come in here this morning and read all your responses, well, you all display so much hope and kindness, and gave me an entire new outlook on the greatness of mankind...I'm presently wallowing in tears of joy...thank you very much!!! and not the least bit ashamed... Karen, I'm so thankful your all going to be ok...and yes, it will be a long haul, but thanks be to God, you got out...God Bless you, and if you need anything, or if there is anything I can do, please ask!!! I live in PA but my home is yours and your family's if ever need be..perhaps a little tight, but hey, sardines worked it out, right? Knowing you are all in Texas presently, that offer may seem lame, just want to help if at all possible. Clothes, canned goods, towels, sheets, money, darling, you name it, give us an address and they will be in the mail heading your way. And I had another thought, which might be a temporary fix...what about a camp ground? They are a lot less expensive, you can buy some very large tents, air mattresses, lights, sleeping bags....and cooking outside isn't all that difficult, once you get the hang of it. Just a thought? I did it one complete summer and it was really a great experience, not to mention, it is a way to get a by on a shoestring for the time being? Karen, whereever and whatever you decide to do, upon getting settled, post your address and let us know what your needs are, and I'm certain, everyone will do their best to get supplies, clothes, etc. to you. Love ya, and this site, well, you people are not only awesome but a perfect example of greatness. Many thanks Karen, for keeping us posted. Love, Lee J. |

I think - is there a way to do a thorough run through of where everyone lives? I will look because yes, some of us ARE missing. Vic? I am going to take REBS links and put them on the boards, ok? That is extra help for those who come to your site. Karen and Twist? By any chance, and I know you guys don't know - but as soon as you get settled someplace PLEASE let Sharon know where things can be sent to help all of you and shut yer trap - yes, things ARE going to come, I can hear the both of you now grumbling. Besides, I had things I was waiting on to actually send you guys, not because of this, just because, good thing I didnt. You guys are amazing. Maree? Oh you are far from helpless - you are HERE, with your beautiful heart and energy and thats what everyone needs. |

The daughter of someone I work with is going to the area as soon as it is safe. She works for a major roofing company and they are setting up teams of people to go down and help out. If she is willing, I'll get her email address and try to find out as much as I can about the area when she gets there. She'll be working long days but maybe she can help? I don't know of anyone else from here who's going down there....some of the cities nearby are sending water/sewer specialists so if I can find a contact with them I will. Keep the faith... Karen...get a spiral notebook and a couple of manila envelopes and start keeping track of everything you spend..FEMA will want to know. Do the kids need anything...can we send some games or CDs? Books? Do you have a way for them to watch DVDs? Something to take their minds off stuff for a bit...it must be very hard on them too! Let us know...still thinking of all of you!! |

Floating the city's dead Wednesday, 10:46 a.m. WWL-TV reporter Karen Swensen related a particularly sad tale from a region overflowing with sad tales. One New Orleans woman waded through the streets of the city, trying to get her husband to Charity Hospital. He had died earlier and she floated his body through the inundated streets on a door that came off their home. from- www.nola.com this is just tragic...other pictures seen on the internet too from various sites, display "graphic content" messages, click to open and...and just so tragic of a content, be careful what the children are looking at. |

Good Morning. ![]() I will sure be glad when I can get through on the phone to you Karen, (I want to hear you,) but I loaded the new Yahoo, and it has pc to pc capabilities with a headset, maybe that will that work for some form of communication? Janet Marie is sending her love to you, as she is very busy with her sister as you know, so passing that along. Absolutely incredible what I woke up to on CNN, just so devastating. Unimaginable to anyone having never been in the way of natuure's wrath. Arkansas! I can officially call you a redneck then? ![]() When the dust settles a bit we can take inventory of what you really can use to get back on your feet, and go from there you guys. In the meantime, do keep track of every cent you are spending, (keep the bills,) as I am sure compensation will require documentation. Good thing you took pictures before you left, smart you! You all have to be exhausted from worry alone, but I always have those "rosey glasses on" and think when a door closes, another opens. It does! I am just sad you didn't get your present in the mail in time. Stay connected gals. Love you all. |

I miss everybody, and since the place I'm going is nearby, I've been told by my host I can pop back in periodically and give you all updates, but the place IS a camp, so there is no land based phone there. That article about the people eating in the restaurant is sad in view of the fact that hundreds of people just walked into town from the projects. They are hungry, hot and just want to know where to go for help. No one has an answer for them. More and more keep coming to the bridge and are sitting there just praying for help. They are saying there are others still in the apartments who are ill or old and can't get out. All are hot and hungry and thirsty. martyjo |

KOA Campgrounds have what they call Kabins, Kottages, lodges, etc. in all the states that have suffered from this hurricane, and also all the surrounding states. Here is a link to that site. It could be an alternative life style for those needing shelter temporarily too maybe, as there are working facilities there? Just a thought. Texas:http://www.koakampgrounds.com/where/tx/index.htm Arkansas: http://www.koakampgrounds.com/where/ar/index.htm Florida: http://www.koakampgrounds.com/where/fl/index.htm So very sad, there is a fire now in the French Quarter at Footlocker, two doors down from the Renaissance Hotel on Bourbon and Canal. I sure hope it is contained, there is so much history along there. |

Sadly, it most likely will not be contained. Watching Foxnews these past few days, I've seen many building on fire, from a marina, houses, businesses, and warehouses. Add to that the looters destroying businesses, and not just for food. Though I abhor theft, food and water are necessities and I can understand the reasoning. People stealing weapons and ammo from sporting goods, high dollar gym shoes, clothing, and in a place with no power grid at all, televisions, vcrs, dvd players, dish systems, computers, phones, and media (vcr and dvd). Some even tried to break open slot machines from destroyed casinos. Part of me wonders about some who chose to stay behind, thinking they stayed for a shopping spree. I mourn for New Orleans. Flooded, trashed, diseased, and I am very reminded of tsunami disasters in Polynesia, Malaysia, India and Thailand. Southern Louisiana has been knocked about 120 years back in time. Only then they didn't have to worry about oil, gasoline, other auto fluids, chemicals and industrial waste now creating rainbow slicks on the festering water. With all the extensive damage, from fire, flood, wind, disease and people, New Orleans might be well served by doing what they've done in the past. Wipe the slate and start from scratch, from the ground up. |

it may very well have to ALicat all those old historic buildings will be condemned after this...IF they are still there...New Orleans will be a different place and like any chaos...the best of people...and the worst of people will come out but it is after all about people...not buildings or things..they will rebuild and maybe something better will come out of all this years down the road hope and it also occured to me today I couldnt thing of ANYTHING that is..in the broad scheme of things as devastating to this country than Katrina... not 9/11..not pearl harbor..not any other natural or unnatural disaster we have ever had....since the Civil War it just feels like...this storm... changed things |

I agree, Bri... I was just sitting here thinking about that very same thing... 9/11 was awful... no doubt about it... but the magnitude of the current situation?... is just unfathomable... surreal... And as you said... It's about the people... the buildings can be replaced... the lives cannot... and the numbers are just heartbreaking... My heart goes out to ALL concerned... and I'm just so very grateful that those we know and love are safe and well... |

I finally got a chance to look at the news on TV this afternoon (no cable here.. the kids... well, anyway) and I could only watch a few minutes before I went outside for a cloud break. It wasn't raining (well, it was between bursts) and I went out on the roof outside my room, and laid there watching the clouds. It does wonders for a weary soul. One thing that we have started in the area is putting jugs out for people to make donations to the Red Cross. The Red Cross will not authorize it (officially) however will take the cash. If anyone has the time, or the means to put out a few jars/cans/bottles/whatever, please do so. I have also posted on a local musician's site, and contacted a few musicians I know asking them to take a special collection for the Red Cross this weekend at their shows. A jar/bottle/etc. at the door, and a few announcements during the show. If anyone klnows any working musicians or bands that are playing this weekend, please ask them for the same thing. I know for a fact that Stottbear isn't going to be too happy this weekend, because I fully plan on putting on a HArry Potter marathon and not let go of her for the entire 6 or 8 hours... If anyone from here needs ANYTHING all you need to do is e-mail me, or IM me (ringo18232@yahoo)... And I mean ANYTHING... including an ear or a virtual shoulder... or something more substantial. Well, back to the roof. http://www.mysticwicks.com (try the after dark section) |

Update for twist! Your son and nephew just walked in! *snoopy dance* Now here's the report on Mom's house: NO WATER IN THE HOUSE! (he said to be sure to tell you that he put the plants out so they could get sun and here's the best news, Nicky the cat showed up after the storm, but he disappeared before Shane evacuated. But YES Shane left food, as much as he could. So exhale. ![]() But he said the house is intact. On our street, there was a gas main leak, but he said it looked okay from what he could see (he had no access) to check it out better. We probably got water as he said it was up to the door, which means, I lost my room, and a few books. Cathy and Mark's house: Water in the garage and back room, but prolly no more than a few inches. Gutters and roof are not exactly attached, but that's standard hurricane damage. (Shawn said the walls were "breathing" and the pressure more than likely loosened up a few nails. whew...we are so lucky.) Shawn took pictures and we'll get them developed as soon as possible. We'll figure out how to get them to you later. and Shane said "Tell GRANDMA THIS--'Thank ME (Shane) for thinning out the trees." (He actually bellowed that in my ear--wince.) And keep in mind, this is how they left it. Things could change in the meantime depending on weather and those nasty folks running rampant, but thus far, we DO have homes to go home to. and we have no way of finding G's mom--but Ginger evacuated her, so I trust that she is in good hands, even if it costs Bettie her life savings. ![]() I love you all. Thank Royce for being so patient with our computer ways. We are packed and ready to head to our new digs. I understand the camp is really nice. Air conditioning, a fenced yard for the dogs, etc. Crowley is full of angels. I think it's pretty miraculous that we did this well, considering we just took off at the last minute not knowing where we'd end up. And Vicky? Shane says thanks and hello. ![]() and serenity is signing off for now. I'll pop in from time to time--I'm not going far away from here. Herb and Sharon have been our saviors (and yes Sharon and Sharon, her name is Sharon) I'm smiling, but it's torn emotions. We are relieved and saddened all at the same time. And blessed. Ta for now! ![]() |

A note: I contacted serenity on Saturday to ask what she knew / felt - all between the lines. She said, "if you can put a thread in...if not, I will." I put a thread in, for my sister. [I've adopted her, don't y'know...] I didn't do anything, kids... but I would like to do more. So thanks, but please...thank that "understanding being" that you thank, that "light" that you believe in; that "place" where you put your thoughts...whatever.... but don't thank me. We all love our poets...and serenity, her family, was in harms way. Whether our prayers helped, or not, doesn't really matter...what loves is the outpouring of all of your gestures, the updates, the hugs, the fact that she knows she, her family, and all of her family crossing states, all of the states that have been devastated... in another thread, in another area, we are talking about what has occured in our lifetime. For so many, too many, this will be one of the memories we will never forget. Poets are writing of "our Tsunami" and other poems to capture a moment in time, a moment when our hearts bleed for those who are lost, without, and hindered in their dreams... meanwhile, in some other areas of lives...things go on without a skip in heartbeat; we could watch the news, be thankful it "isn't about us" and go on. So many lives live like that. So, for those who thanked me? Instead, thank serenity...for having me as her friend...I was just a conduit of sisterhood. So many others did so much more...Vicky and Mysteria.... thank them... and... God bless us...everyone. |

K, and T, actually sitting here crying tears of relief, but I think it still best to wait to get clearance to return. The water conditions, and the general living conditions are not conducive to habitat right now and won't be for quite a while. You truly are so blessed, as others were not as fortunate to have their family make it, and I am just so thankful you are that blessed. I am not giving up pushing that re-dial button until one tower lets me through, and Doreen wanted me to tell you she is so happy you are together and all well too. She has a friend there as well that she hasn't heard from and is worried about him too. I miss talking to you more than I can say, but more than anything - I know you will be contagious with your great New Orleans spirit when you get back, and only help people to stick together and rebuild what Mother Nature dared try take away. Someone email me where you can be reached by mail please? Anything you need please let me know, anything. Indeed - I'm watching footage as I write, and the devastation is unbelievable. The view from the air is only superseded by the view fromt he ground... and vice versa. I'm very grateful that serenity & family are accounted for and well - and hope for a timely return to normalcy... ![]() |

Isn't this a miracle??? this family of friends??? The more so because the majority of us never have met each other person to person and yet it feels like I've known you all my life. I'M PROUD OF ALL OF YOU AND I LOVE YOU ALL. I'm so glad Karen and her family are safe and together at last and yet I can't get my mind off of all those people who've lost loved ones and everything else. We had that kind of flood in winter 1953. I didn't live in this area then, but saw the photo's and heard the tales. Our weatherman said, to explain the force of Katrina: imagine the worst storm ever here (wich is 12 beaufort)and then think that Katrina was 4 times that force. It's almost impossible to imagine that. Floods have been occurring all over the world in the past years and lots of people died in them, but when it affects those you know, the area you know, it just seems to hit your heart ever so much harder. Hugs and Dutch knuffels to you all. Titia Like scattered leaves...my words will flow |

here is a site with a list of contact numbers for agencies that are providing aid... http://www.storm2k.org/wx/ one thing that's struck me is the number of children that are stranded without anything -- including those who made it out before it hit.. I don't know about you guys -- but I have a basement full of toys my kids were planning on yard selling... they're going to the salvation army -- we need to get some toys in the hands of these kids... I haven't heard anybody mention it at all and it needs to be done.. teddy bears, beanie babies... something they can hug.. one ten year old boy in a Biloxi neighborhood made it out alive -- none of his family -- and hasn't found anybody yet that he even knows... Toys... get to your local salvation army -- the marines toys for tots -- whatever you can come up with... |

My boss asked me today if our city sent people into the area to help, would I want to go.......not sure what I could do, but I said yes. I told him I think we'd be better off to send in some utility workers who know how to deal with broken water mains and sewer systems though. Not sure if this will be come a reality but for now, it's a possiblity. |

Sharon! With your big heart you are wondering what you could do? Just be you that ought to be enough ![]() I truly wish I could be a "hands-on" helper as I feel so terribly helpless up here, and wanting to help. The only thing I can do from here is what I am doing and donate to the organizations that are there and need it. I hate to say this but I still can't even mentally grasp that an entire city can be literally underneath water, become a city of refugees in only a few days, and have the type of devastation I am seeing on t.v. This is the most heartbreaking thing I have ever witnessed at least in my lifetime. Prayers continue and candles are still lit, and will stay lit. I am still so worried about another friend's whereabouts down there who lived by Karen, but can only hope he made it to safety. |

I've been reading with great interest and thankfulness. What a wonderful family of friend this place is! I already knew that from personal experience. Mysteria was my angel, too. Serenity's recent loss of a sister, brought enough pain. I'm tearfully happy learning her family is safely out and accounted for. Prayers continue. God bless! Rae |

"With power scheduled to be completely restored by today, Gulf Power officials said they will shift their "sights to Mississippi" on Thursday. "We're sending about 200 employees from line crews to tree trimmers and support personnel," Hutchinson said. "It's the largest power restoration project in the history of the United States ... that's going on right now in Mississippi and Louisiana. The Gulf Power team will have to be as self-sufficient as possible, he said. The crew is bringing tractor trailers that will serve as their sleeping quarters and support personnel will prepare food for the local crews helping out." courtesy of Pensacola News Journal www.pensacolanewsjournal.com |

I have such a guilty feeling heading off to bed....safe, dry and relaxed from a hot cup of tea. Seems selfish somehow. I had to check in this thread to make sure our friends are still okay. Why is it taking so long to get supplies into New Orleans? The city is in chaos. The only light in this dark time is the news that the water is no longer rising. Thank the Lord for small favours. Where is our Toerag? Anyone heard from him? I will say extra prayers tonite. I love you all. Chrislane |

It's taking so long for many reasons. First and foremost is the shock and magnitude. Then roads are flooded or simply washed away and bridges are either flat out destroyed, damaged, or heavily compromised. Roughly 85% of New Orleans is underwater right now, and there's only so much one can pack into a light drafting water vessel. You'll need a light drafting vessel so you don't hit submerged vehicles, houses, signs, hydrants, or anything else you really would not want a prop or keel to come into contact with. God bless our military though. Multiple states have mobilized Army National Guardsmen and Reservists; Coast Guard is on the scene for search and rescue; Navy is sending multiple vessels for hospitaliztion, recovery, and supplies; and Air Force and Air Guard are sending rescue personnel and equipment. I'm very thankful those protesting recruitment stations didn't succeed. |

Thank you Ali, for explaining to those who cannot envision the devastation, just how bad it is. Sometimes a picture...needs a few thousand words. You know what I mean. It can't be taken in, just by photo. Friends? It is worse than the news says. They haven't even encompassed it yet. |

And Vicky has updated the Katrina Victim Site - please take a look - it is quite amazing, its all different now: http://katrina.raynedaycreations.com/ Please pass that on to anyone needing aid or looking for family members, I am getting the media to get it out there so we can help others. Enchantress is far north ... she should be fine... but I had to log back on to gripe. I've had the news on all night... and I just heard that Congress...is on VACATION....Yes I knew this...but I guess they won't reconvene for a week - and after that, they may decide what to help with. Do they NOT know how to spell e-m-e-r-g-e-n-c-y? Sometimes, sometimes.... Oh how I want to throw more than spitballs. So says Sun. Sorry for the rant, but that just infuriates me so much! Thank you, PiPsters, for ALL of YOUR unvacationally caring. |

Yes Kari.. you're right -- it is worse than it looks... and... I'm going to say -- quit looking... I know it's hard to do folks.. but, at some point you have to get away from it -- your primitive brain doesn't differentiate between television and reality -- yes -- it's real -- and we need to feel the empathy - but what I'm talking about is something that we're actually experiencing ourselves.. that's why we still flinch when a train comes racing towards us on the screen -- even though we know it's just a picture. It takes its toll in stress... the victims of this monster don't need a nation of stressed out people trying to lend support -- we have to think of our own mental health too. It was good to hear the officials start talking in real terms today though. I'm not too concerned about the Congress though Kari... the executive branch handles these kinds of things and the DHS has been doing a spectacular job already from what I've seen. They'll be back in session soon enough to appropriate special funding which is all they can really do anyway -- as Cat pointed out though -- the Guards are rolling in -- the Navy is on the way -- the Coast Guard.. it's all happening. |

I was talking to a friend of mine about Lousiana, and it turns out the the Salvation Army is also on scene assisting with the effortr. Why I am suprised, I have no clue, however.... In addition to giving a couple of bucks to the Rede Cross, please give them the price of a burger as well. I am still smiling at the fact that all of our friends on here have come out of this physically unscathed and that the PIP community just pulled together as quickly ans as fully as they did. Iliana, I know that smell full well, being raised on the Texas coast about 15 miles from the Gulf with Oyster Creek right down the bank from my house. During the 70's through 1984 we got many hurricanes, and seeing the brilliant blue eye right above you is breathtaking, before the winds change direction. We were on higher ground, some 50 feet above the creek, but all those in flood prone areas would keep a flatbottomed boat tethered to their porch. Very low draft and about the only way to get around until the waters subsided. But that smell...even in areas without standing water, nothing really compares with the scent of rotting mud. Vicky, that is an amazing site! Have you passed it on to news outlets and relief organizations? Edit: Posted the Hurricane Katrina site at the community forums at military.com. |

Another in our family, who needs prayer and all that goes with it. Aleta, one of our newer members, talented poet and a gentle lady, who I'd invited to join the site not long ago. After several days without hearing from her or seeing her on PiP or the beautiful poetry site she runs, I sent a note of concern. Under the circumstances I'll have to risk that she'd approve my doing this, because I don't want to add to her burdens by asking....here's her reply to me: Hi Ed, This has to be quick, running this on a faulty generator that is 7 years old. We have no AC, but living with my grandmother in Zachary, LA. She was hit hard by the hurricane too, with a leaky roof and no electricity. We lost everything, Ed.... 4-5 feet of water in home and at the office. We cannot even get back to the area for a month. Prayers, please.. every day is so bleak... Take care (yes, still must sign off that way, it's all I have left) Aleta Aleta, if you come back here and it turns out that you didn't want me to do this....my apologies in advance....but I wanted everyone with a prayer to give, to know. ~~(¸¸¸¸ºº> ~~(¸¸¸¸ºº> ~~(¸¸ ¸¸ºº> ~~~(¸¸ER¸¸ºº> ______________Ratleader______________ [This message has been edited by Ratleader (09-01-2005 12:07 PM).] |

Through the Houston offices of my former employer, I was able to get some information on their New Orleans employees. Most of my friends and former co-workers have checked in with someone who checked in with someone, etc etc and the HR department is compiling a list... and were nice enough to look up specific individuals for me. *S* The company seems to be doing everything humanly possible to help their employees... including guaranteeing salaries will continue for the next month... I know that doesn't erase the pain but it's got to ease it some. No news yet on Brenda, whose submerged neighborhood I saw on TV... |

The devastation grows and grows but I do believe they are doing all they can, but in this situation the people are not getting enough. So sad, and LR you are so right about taking time away from this. The depression factor on those not right in it, is high and to be a functional society ready to help we have to be alert, etc. Thank you for that post as I was glued to t.v., this place, and the internet. All of us that are able to help but are outside of this situation need to be "all there" to help if called on by our friends, family or our country. Sitting glued to watching this disaster takes a toll on everyone. I am glad of the coverage for those that have lost friends and loved ones, as you never know they could be right on screen. I am trying still to find the whereabouts of a friend that lived out of New Orleans, and and still can't get any information, so it touches the world this sadness. |

suthern? I can't find adagio/Ralph either. I'm very concerned as his father and mother are both chronically ill, and I don't know that they had the resources to evacuate. The phone lines are up in some of the Westbank area--that area where we live that seems to be graced by less destruction than most. I'm relieved, but still searching for missing family (mother in law) and friends. I did manage to get in touch with my friend who lives in our neighborhood and rode out the storm. She told me they are constantly boiling water when they can get it--obviously the water pressure is down so it just trickles out. Her brother is missing, and I'll put his name on the list as I'm able, his name is Stan Mendelsen Jr., (anyone who has a notion to put his name on any lists may do so with my blessing) and he was last seen in Metairie, La. A professinal musician, he was moving his equipment to a 3rd floor apartment and said he would phone his sister when he got back. Obviously he never did. The magnitude of the situation is just sinking in for me, and for once, I don't think I have the words. On the other hand... The camp, by the way is truly nice, and this gentleman is incredibly generous, allowing us to live there rent free. There's so many little things we take for granted. I pray I never forget this lesson of gratitude--not only for the daily comforts, but for the people in our lives. And by the way? I know I want my city back. Don't count us out folks. And I have been trying for years to tell people how bad certain elements of New Orleans had become and now the entire world sees what generation after generation of abject poverty, ignorance, and poor education can spawn. Now I want to show the world the element of New Orleans culture that we are most proud of too. Strength, courage, generosity, and tenacity. I'm going to shaddup now, because I'm a bit emotional today. Please know I'm not forgetting about our neighbors during this time either. My prayers are with the world. ta for now...I'll be checking in. ![]() Love to all. I'm off to check Dixie's thread now. Another lesson I've learned is it really ain't all about me. ![]() |

Thanks, Sharon... ![]() I was able to track down a phone number for him to call. He's in TX right now, so he does have phone service, but his command does not... so hopefully the number that I was given will help him track them down. I'm waiting to hear back from him as to whether or not it worked... and if not, I will definitely give Susan a try. |

K, God I miss ya - You keep that ole N'Arlins attitude and spread it around to all you touch like you always do, and your city's courage and strength will get you all through as well as the pride. Still can not get through on the phone to you, and want to talk to you SO badly just to "feel" you - you know? I haven't heard from "our friend" either ![]() It takes something like this for all of us to realize our blessings, our over-indulgences, and find the true, pure love that is within us all to give if we only have the courage to make that first step. My heart goes out to your family, and every single person down there that this tradegy has touched. I too, shall never take water, or the basic necessities for granted again. God/Goddess be with you m'friend, and if you can ever call or get Twist to call from Texas I would sure appreciate just "hearing you" to bandaid this feeling of helplessness. ![]() ![]() [This message has been edited by Mysteria (09-01-2005 04:05 PM).] |

I was just telling Vicky, that I can't even imagine how the men and women in your armed forces overseas must be handling this, if they have family, or loved ones in the affected area. We have to give our armed forces all the credit they all surely deserve, they suffer greatly for all of us. This time they suffer more than usual. Man, these are sad days. |

Many schools in the country are doing something like what is copied below: New Jersey students whose educations have been disrupted by Katrina should contact any of the following Rutgers officials by Sept. 15: * Deborah Bowles, (856) 225-2898, [email protected] (for courses in Camden) * Joseph Walsh, (732) 625-7012, [email protected] (for courses in New Brunswick/Piscataway) * The Admissions Office, (973) 353-5205, [email protected] (for courses in Newark) Visiting students will be responsible for in-state tuition and fees, but Rutgers will consider delaying payment in individual cases. |

Just an update... I just received an e-mail from Brandon's (the guy who contacted me for naval info) wife, thanking me for the number I sent and promising to keep in touch... So, hopefully I'll know soon if he was able to contact his command... A huge 'thank you' to those of you who helped me track down the info for him... ![]() |

So glad to hear you and your family are safe Karen…hugs of relief for you. I know you’ve got a lot going on, so I’ll wait a week or two to e-mail you…know I’m thinking of you though. I wish I could offer my home as a refuge to those suffering, but I’m way too far away. The most I can do is donate to the Red Cross to help, God knows they’re going to need all the help they can get to deal with this disaster. I commend Sharon, Vicky, Karilea et al for all your efforts to help. You do PIP proud You can never win or lose |

I had to take last night away from all of this. It was a nice break. So after I got gas (finally), me and an old friend got together and went for dinner and took a swim in the pool and watched some movies. We all need a break now and then from such a depressing state of mind. LR was right. Karen, it's so good to know you are doing okay, you and your family. There is so much help out there for you and everyone in this mess, slowly but surely. You are such a big part of PIP...we all love you. |

I am also putting this here. Emergency numbers the US Navy has set up for our active duty members and civ. employees: HURRICANE KATRINA HOTLINES The Navy is sincerely concerned for our Sailors and their family members in the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina. In view of this disaster, the Navy has set up several hotlines. MILITARY: In light of the communications difficulties created by the hurricane, Navy Personnel Command has set up a 24 hour help line for both Sailors and their family members to call for information regarding their loved ones: 1-877-414-5358. This line is staffed 24x7 by active duty Navy personnel and will have connectivity with Navy, FEMA and other government agencies. They will try their very best to answer questions regarding the status of Navy family members, but please be aware that communication in the region is still very challenging and in some cases impossible at this point. CIVILIANS: If DON civilians call the above number, they will be provided a toll free number that will be ringing here at the Office of Civilian Human Resources (OCHR). That civilian-specific toll free number is 1-877-689-2722 and it will be manned beginning at 0800 today and then during normal business hours until further notice. The phone will have a recorded message when the phone is not manned and staff will be checking for messages over the weekend. |

I don't have much time, but I wanted to pop in, and thank you doesn't cover all I'd like to say, but I felt I had to say it. And twist? Melanie found Stan--he was rescued from a rooftop. He is doing better, but the water was so bad his legs are badly blistering from walking through it. They are packing up and heading to Missouri today. I'll try to call late tonight, when the lines aren't so busy. I love you much. and to my family at Pip...hand over heart--tears of gratitude. no words will do ![]() |

I just had a long conversation with Karen just now, and to those of you that need thanks, (you know who you are,) she said, "For once she is speechless, and only thank you will come out, and she sends love to y'all." She said to tell you all she loves Crowley and is wearing camouflage to blend in, ![]() ![]() She is working today towards getting registered for relief funds, food stamps, etc. as it appears her husband's company has not paid their employees nor will they anytime soon, as they also were hit hard by the hurricane. On going to a local ATM to access funds, this latest development was a shocker as you can imagine for them, and I am sure will be for so many down there that will be heading to FEMA for offered assistance. She said also to tell you that a group of her friends that belonged to a gun collector’s club that stayed behind were doing their own vigilante surveillance and had her home, and her sisters homes on their watch list, so hopefully they will all have some things left when they get back. She sounded in as good as spirits as one could be, and said to tell you all she is going to make her first Wal-Mart purchase of a notebook today ![]() There are for now, Karen, her husband, her daughter, and son, her two grown nephews, in that camp (that the lumber mill used for parties in the past,) but it is a protected wooden roofed structure, with a running bathroom, and a small kitchen, and filled with lots of love at the moment by a family I sure admire and respect, and learn form daily. Just got this from the Red Cross - in case you are looking for anyone: _____________________________________ I apologize for taking so long to get back to you, but this information just became available. Best wishes all. This afternoon, the American Red Cross, with the support of the worldwide Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, is launching a website to assist family members anxious for news of loved ones living in the path of Hurricane Katrina. Evacuees wishing to inform loved ones of their location can register their name by clicking on “Family Links Registry” on the site. Loved ones can register the names of their loved ones and view the list of those already posted. People looking for loved ones or evacuees wishing to let others know they are safe should go to www.redcross.org and click “Family Links Registry http://www.familylinks.icrc.org/katrina [This message has been edited by littlewing (09-02-2005 09:35 PM).] |

I thought I would share a note from a survivor. Just for compassion. A few are the lucky ones and I am sure will have great desires to rebuild New Orleans... Hello Family and Friends, We are safe in Florida at my parents' house. It occurred to me yesterday that although I had sent out my cell phone number to several of you before we evacuated on Sunday, you are unable to reach me because I have a Mississippi number and cannot receive calls. Trying to call and have not been able to get through. For the record, the kids and I are now at my parents' house in Grand Island, FL (near Orlando). . So here is the deal as I know it now. Miraculously, our house survived the storm with only very minor structural damage. A rain gutter is damaged, a column on the back porch is not quite as straight as it used to be, and the fence in the back yard took a good beating, but there is no flooding, we did not lose any trees, and our house is still structurally solid. It is nothing short of a miracle. To give you some perspective, we live just 1/2 - 3/4 mile from the beach. The devastating storm surge that leveled hundreds of homes came within 1/4 mile of our house at most. We feel amazingly, richly blessed. That said, we have several friends who lost everything. People on the ground in Gulfport say that it looks like Ground Zero after 9/11. Nothing in the pile of rubble that used to be homes is recognizable. No doors, no windows, no shoes.... just enormous piles of lumber. It is beyond my comprehension. Chad and his battalion flew from Iraq/Kuwait as far as Atlanta and then took buses to Gulfport, MS. They arrived on the base early Wednesday morning. He is now staying at our house (instead of in the shelter on the base) and riding his bike back and forth to the base to conserve the gas in his car. Since we have no idea when the kids and I will be able to go home, we're trying to make plans for Chad to come to Florida to spend some time with us. We have not seen him since he returned from deployment. You can imagine that the base is very busy and there is a lot to be done, the first of which is to find the military members who are still unaccounted for. The numbers are in the hundreds and no one knows if they evacuated and didn't tell anyone where they were going or if they tried to ride out the storm and didn't survive. One Seabee told about swimming out of his apartment and somehow surviving. Unbelievable. We will certainly wait for electricity and water to be restored. We also need to be sure that we can get food (grocery stores are open - the base commissary took a good hit, but can be repaired) and that it is safe health-wise to return. And then there's the gasoline issue. I'm guessing about a month, but I really don't know for sure. Fortunately, we have a comfortable place to stay until we can get home. We may have to settle for a week or ten days with Chad before he returns to Gulfport to assist with recovery, but we are endlessly thankful that we have a home to return to eventually. When we do go home, life will be extremely different. Our church is completely gone (it was on the beach), the kids' preschool was at our church so that is gone, "our" Walmart is completely gone, Tom's favorite restaurant (Waffle House - bleck!) is gone.... I could go on and on. And, of course, the lives of several friends have been changed forever as their homes were literally washed away. We are the very, very fortunate ones. I have no idea why God spared us, but I am determined to find out. Thank you for your prayers and thoughts.Kelly |

Hey Titia... I don't know why that would be happening to you... Unless... several of the links are set up to open in a new window, so if you have a pop-up blocker, that could possibly be causing a problem... Other than that?... I really don't know... I haven't heard of anyone else having a problem.. but if they are, I hope someone will let me know... Oh... and?... When you get the error message, what does it say? That might help to figure it out too... |

Vicky, I tried to post something after registering, it read 'no new posts' in the forum to offer individual assistance. Also, its getting hard to find the site LOL for those of us who forgot to put a link in favorites...I had to go backwards through the pages on this post to find it. Can you start another post somehwere that gives us a quicker link? My PC is draggin itself lately, and even with DSL I am having some difficulty accessing pages quickly. Don't know what's wrong, as I run AVG, Spybot, operate behind firewalls and block most popups. LOL, anyway, I would like to offer some help, I have access to a local thrift store where I can get lots of things for mere pennies, and might be able to ship some items to displaced families. I would love it if someone in Texas would be willing to receive some goods that could go to one of the relo centers. ?anyone? |

Kelly, thanks for sharing the good news of your home being spared and the sad news of Chad being home from Iraq and your not being able to see him yet. Yes going 'home' is a lot more than one's own house and family as you pointed out. The businesses, church and resteraunts you frequent are gone as are friends and neighbors. Life is forever changed. I pray you'll soon be seeing Chad and that your future gets brighter by the day. God bless, Rae |

A note about Wal-Mart Store Shopping Cards: I love that darn Wal-Mart, well they came to Canada and we love them here, but Canadians should be aware, that if they are sending Wal-Mart Shopping Cards to their friends and family in the United States they don't work down there if purchased in Canada. ![]() Hrummmph! FYI, if anyone is trying to send money to loved ones, Western Union has only cut it's fees for recipients in the states of LA, MS, and AL. I found a similar service that was much cheaper than Western Union www.emoneygram.com (then click on consumer products) They have 75,000 locations world-wide, many of which are in the US, so you can go to one of their locations to transfer money to the location nearest to the person you want to send to. They also have an on-line service, but I didn't try that (not sure that it's available to those of us in Canada) For Canadians who want to send money, most of our postal offices are affiliated with this service. I went to my local post office to send the money, and they told me that it would be available to the location closest to my friend within about 10 minutes. If anyone has any questions, feel free to e-mail me. |

Houston is great! There have been so many who have volunteered to help that the AstroDome has had to turn people away. The thing is....this is going to be a long-term need....I just hope and pray that when a couple of weeks pass, people don't forget they and their efforts are still needed. It is so easy to be moved by the news....then when the next story comes along, we forget. We need to remember that there are hungry and needy everywhere, and make giving and doing a part of our regular living and not just during the initial news coverage. If the whole world believed like this then I feel certain it would be a better place. I love this place and all the folks here! ![]() |

Slow or no, it's still great just to be able to access the net from my own home! I know I'm lucky. Here locally, I've collected baby formula and dropped it off at Evergreen Aviation, who have helicopters doing rescue work and now a truckload of bottled water, baby formula and diapers that will head to Biloxi tomorrow, with two volunteer drivers so they can go nonstop. And I'll be sending some stuff to you, Jo, next Tuesday, and would like to send something to Karen at her campsight but don't know the address there in Crowley. ~hint~ if someone emails me Karen's temporary address I'd like to send a personal care package. ![]() I'll be working this evening at a local thrift store, sorting things and have already gathered some items to ship, will get more over the long holiday weekend. Jo, its true, charity is an ongoing thing. |

I only have a little bit of time, but I wanted to express gratitude to those of you who have been so generous. But please know, I am not just putting on a show here, there are many many others who were wiped out by this crisis and others who need more help than I. I am quite overwhelmed at the outpouring of love from you all--but please, if you would like to help, please know there are people who need it more than I do. My crisis is temporary. I really do have a home to return to--others do not. Find a family to adopt and help them get on their feet. Do whatever you can, where ever you might be. It's hard to type through tears so I'm going to shaddup for now. My time is limited anyhow. I miss you all and love you more than I can express. thank you and yanno what? I'll be around... ![]() |

And yep... what jojo said... that they are... and?... they also set up a small shelter in Phoenix today... It will temporarily house 1,000 people... and last I heard, they were working on a location for more... so, since I'm unable to travel to help, I'm hoping to be able to do so, right here at home... |

President Hammond of Fort Hays University, Hays, Kansas, said today that they will be glad to take on 400 college students that have been misplaced from LA universities; and will make 25 openings for teachers who have also lost their jobs. ~*~ Officials from the North Central Kansas Chapter of the American Red Cross have been told to be ready to receive and shelter in Salina up to 500 victims of Hurricane Katrina from New Orleans. Executive Director John Degand called a meeting Saturday afternoon that included among others the Salina Fire Department and EMS, Salina Police, the Salina Airport Authority, the Saline County Sheriff's Office, Saline County Emergency Management, the Saline County Health Department, and Salina media. Degand said that he has been put on notice, and has asked to be prepared, to take care of up to 500 evacuees from New Orleans. Right now victims are being flown out of New Orleans. More than likely Degand won't get any notice of a flight bound for Salina until it is in the air. In order to make this mission possible citizens are needed to volunteer to help. Tasks and jobs that need to be filled include helping in registration at the airport, drivers, greeters and escorts, and physical labor. Volunteers with medical skills are also needed, as are volunteers with bilingual skills. Anyone who wants to volunteer is asked to call 826-8000 between 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM Saturday, and between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM both Sunday and Monday. Volunteers must be able to respond on short notice. All volunteers will be put on a list, and as soon as official word is received that a flight of hurricane victims is on its way to Salina, the volunteers will be notified of where to go. ~*~ And I know we are only one of hundreds of communities, gearing up to assist. |

As previously mentioned -- in addition to seeking to provide basic necessities to refugees via Red Cross and Salvation Army I've been looking into where we can send items directly since those agencies don't want to handle the logistics right now.. One shelter that is looking for non-monetary donations directly is the Austin Convention center Send items directly to Austin Convention Center http://neworleans.craigslist.org/bab/95273877.html I'm focusing on books and toys for the little ones which is what I'm going to send. Iliana -- do you know if the Astro-Dome is going to accept direct shipments? |

Our church here in Ft. Lauderdale has taken in 50 families and set up living conditions for them where they will be fed and sheltered until they can get back on their feet. This is what America is all about - not sitting around complaining about what the government is NOT doing - but ordinary citizens getting out doing it themselves. There has never been such an outpour of generosity as there is now. I am proud of our people...... |

Reb....they were not as of yesterday, because they just can't handle it logistically....so they have asked for things to be sent to Salvation Army and Red Cross...so they can sort, etc. If I find out more, I'll let you know. We took our things direct to Salvation Army which has stations all over Houston. If you want to ship to me, let me know and we will take them to the local dropoffs for you. It's my understanding there are other shelters around the area, too...heard of one in Katy (which is a Houston suburb). It makes sense to put the things in the hands of the location rescue organizations so they can allocate and distribute. Also, because many, many people from LA are in town but not necessarily at the Astrodome (maybe in motels or with family or with people who have just volunteered to take them in) and most probably, they'll go to Salvation Army or local religious organizations for help (in addition to FEMA and Red Cross). Heard also today that a number of the misplaced will find find temporary shelter in Huntsville, TX, San Antonio and Dallas, too name a few. |

Reb -- got this bit of information about sending things to AstroDome from a yahoo Astrodome chat site: Houston Astrodome One Reliant Park Houston, TX 77054 Identify the box as HURRICANE RELIEF/CLOTHING. Guess in your case, you'd put /TOYS. Also... in that same chat room, there was an email requesting clothes items to be taken directly to the National Guard. Hope that helps. |

Almost every city that is taking in refugees will also need some extra help sorting through and distributing these items. Any volunteer time you can give to any local community assistance group helps the overall giving system. I volunteer at a local Catholic charity thrift store and food bank, and they NEVER have enough helpers on a regular basis. So its an ongoing thing, this charity and giving business. If you can't give this month, give next month or when you can, it all adds up. I am proud to be a member of this poetic family chain of Love, which continues to extend kindness and generosity. |

Jo, wish I could bring some stuff to Houston myself, just to meet you in 3D! Thank you for being so kind as to accept delivery of some items for whichever group can get the goods to those in need. It doesn't matter to me who does the giving, just so the ones who are needy get what they need with dignity and respect. MUAH! |

Everywhere I go, here in Ontario, people are having fundraisers, food drives, collecting donations of clothes and supplies and money ~ from country markets to Canada postal stations. Children are even selling cookies and lemonade outside their homes to make money to send to the victims of Katrina. People are gathering around the world to help our American friends in need. God bless the victims and all those who are lending a helping hand. Linda |

Ok...here's the latest on how you can help in Houston with time, things or money: http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/nation/3338667 Apparently, there is now a concern about where to store all the clothes which have been donated...they are currently looking for a warehouse where they won't get damaged. Also, I heard the local women's shelter was taking in women and children. They normally accept clothing donations, as well, but I don't know if they are overwhelmed with that or not yet. Still investigating. |

Yes, Dixie, it was good news. It's the same with the animals as with the people, that for too many...we are too late ![]() But we may be just in time to rescue several hundred critters and someday get them reunited with their families. It's important to those displaced families that they find their beloved pets. |

Yes Kacy, I read some of the heart-breaking stories, and I know how important pets are to those people. I'm a cat person. I have a stray cat where I work and we've formed quite a bond. I couldn't imagine being without him since the hours are long and he's the only one that really hangs out with me there. I think I spend more time with kitty than I do with any human being. He has become very special to me. ![]() My prayers are for those who didn't make it out, and for those who make it out, to be reunited with their families. |

Hi everyone. I just spoke with Karen at length, that is until the mosquitoes forced her inside ![]() http://www.acadiaparishpolicejury.org/index_files/MoreInformation.htm Karen wished for me to express her sincere gratitude to all of you here for your concern, and is humbled by the outcry of love from the poets of this site, and the generosity of Ron to allow this thread for communication. She wanted me to also let you know she saw first hand today some very real situations that were extremely heart-wrenching. Her heart goes out to all those suffering personal loss, loss of family members or friends, and those separated from their family or friends. She stressed there were so many she saw worse off than she finds herself to be right now, not only in LA, but the entire Gulf Coast. Please keep her and her family in your prayers, along with all those suffering, and thank you. |

Did you look on the Red Cross site to see if they registered themselves there? You can register yourself too so they can contact you. www.redcross.org to the right . . . look there, click in red where it says Family Links, if not CALL Red Cross they will have ways to communicate. Visit the Family Links Registry or Call 1-877 LOVED-1S (1-877-568-3317) Good Luck. |

The Network for Good is an amazing resource if anyone is looking to volunteer, donate or look for people or pets. Every imaginable resource is on this site and if you scroll down under the Main Red Cross listing, you will see the site created By Vicky and Twist to help others. They picked us up. It is in blue: Hurricane Katrina Communication. http://www.networkforgood.org/topics/animal_environ/hurricanes/ The best thing to do is tell anyone to contact the Red Cross local chapter or the Salvation Army, but Network for Good has a lot of other resources too. If you go on www.yahoo.com Network for Good is listed there right by the Red Cross and Katrina Relief. Good Luck Everyone and God Bless. Sue |

As I've been reviewing this phenomenal thread and the outpouring of PiP generosity and love, I've also been watching the news coverage of Katrina's aftermath. Wonderful news! I just heard from Carla, and she is alright. Damage to house...but it can be fixed. She says more than anything, she hopes people will donate to Salvation Army. Also says there are alot of people taking advantage of the situation; it breaks her heart. To get gas she gave a man $200 and he drove to the nearest town that had gas an brought back enough for her and several other families to get back to Biloxi to see if their homes were still standing. Thanks for all your prayers; Carla said she felt them. Please continue to keep her in your prayers; she was very emotional. ![]() |

Waving at you all. We're doing well as I seem to be under the protection of a legion of angels. ![]() The boys went back yesterday to assess damage. Let's just say that none of them want to go back. I just looked in my local paper this morning and there are tons of garage/yard sales going on this weekend. I have never been one to go all over town to yard sales, but many of them have household items, baby and maternity stuff, toys, books, etc. Some are selling all they have because they are moving (which I don't blame them one bit)... I hadn't thought of it before, but yard sales may be a really good place to get some stuff to donate |

It sure warmed my heart to be asked by my granddaughter to help her on Saturday, as the kids of Port Moody are holding a toy sale and swap meet and all the proceeds are being donated. I think it is great when the kids get involved when something like this happens, at a level they can comprehend for sure. So, Gramma is having a sleep-over and helping the girls price toys. Dixie, Garage Sales are a way of life up here, I love them! I wish I could show you our local paper today there are tons, and the proceeds are for Red Cross. (I just hope the make sure they send it that's all.) These are the best of times and the worst of times, as Dickens once said. (That was my favorite book in school.) Who cares right? LOL I hope everyone has a great weekend, and try to get out and enjoy some sunshine, or even the rain won't you all? |

Sharon, there are some here that say the proceeds will go to Red Cross and disaster relief, but even if they don't send the money, we can still send the goods we bought. Some people will take advantage of a situation like this, but the good people much outweigh the bad. And the book...yes, I think everyone should read it. |

inot2B ~ My heart sure goes out to you, its the not knowing that can get to us the most. Please keep that faith up, as there are so many people that were rescued but have been shifted from one place to the other, and the whereabouts of people is a mess right now. Unfortunatley we have to give the system time for the paperwork to catch up, to our anxiety, and that is the hardest part. In answer to your question though. Various townships,or parishs have had the deceased trucked in and bodies are in the process of being identified through dna, and dental records, etc. From what I saw on the news and have read they are doing this with the utmost dignity and to the best of their ability. Once this process is complete, the bodies will be released to the family members after they have been identified. This is a very long, slow and hard process due to the situation of the water. They have turned large structures into morgues for this process, but to be honest, it is going to be a long and frustrating process until the identities are made public. God give you that strength you need to just keep the faith your family and friends are safe somewhere, for they very well could be. I think it is better knowing the truth and the process in place rather than second-guessing it, so please stay in touch with CNN.com, or MSNBC.com for the latest news published, and again, may God bless you, and keep you all strong. |

passing shadows, it was in the news this morning that the red cross is saying please do NOT send any more goods to the gulf coast. They are overloaded and it is hampering their other efforts. They will have no choice but to start throwing things away in landfills. They, of course, are accepting cash donations from anyone willing to help....but no more goods. inot2b....I am so very sorry to hear that. I'm hoping everything turns out good....prayers here. ![]() |

Dixie, its true, the IRC doesn't accept goods, only CASH. But many private families have taken in displaced relatives and friends, and that always places a huge burden on the hosting family. I'm sending some things to a lady who has taken in over 28 relatives from MS. In various online blogs and forums, you'll find many many people who will happily accept those tangible goods. Some group shelters might, but be sure and check first to see if they have the manpower to receive/distribute the goods. |

Thank you all for your thoughts. No we haven't found him. His name is John Fredrick Milton of Lafitte, LA. He is an out patient of the New Orleans VA. All I can do is pray that he is in an area that doesn't have elec. or ph services. People have been so nice and helpful and for that I do appreciate it. Thank you! |

I saw where you posted at ICRC looking for him.. and at the MSNBC looking for database --try this one too: h ttp://people.nola.com/ that's the Time's Picayune's database -- I didn't find him there but I also didn't see where you posted looking for him -- that would be a good place to set up a page. |

I have located the VA hospitals where they sent their patients and they all told me to put his name with the Red Cross. That is where they are sending all the names they have. Thank you for the suggestion, I'm willing to try anything to find him. My other brother and I will go to LA. when they open up for family to come in. |

I haven't been around for a while due to a little operation on my jaw. I'm so glad most of our friends are counted for and I'm hoping with all my heart that one day John Fredrick will be found safe and sound too. I know our people who did the identifications in Thailand, are now in the USA to assist with this terrible job and yes, it will take a long time, alas. Mommy Muys sends her love to everybody. She can't follow all of this thread, but I keep her posted. I'm proud of all of you. Knuffels, Titia Like scattered leaves...my words will flow |

Thank you, Lord, for blessings in all this mess. I'm so happy your brother's been located. On sending goods Our local paper carried an article saying private trucks are arriving filled with goods. There's no where to park them, no one to distribute the items, and in some cases, the drivers and helpers don't have funds to care for themselves. They asked everyone to let the organizations geared for this, such as Red Cross and Salvation Army handle goods. Some goods are just in the way, others go unused because they aren't what's needed or clothing does't fit those where it's given. So rather than buying goods at garage sales to ship, have one, like Sharon's granddaughters, and send the proceeds. I took clothing, blankets, school supplies and some personal items to a moving van loading to go down just before I saw that article. |

The Kid's Market was a huge success! They showed an overhead video on Hurricane Katrina while the Children's flea market and swamp meet was going on at the Rec Center this weekend. That could have had something to do with its huge success,as Tori was so excited she made $280. or so to donate from the toys sold that she didn't want anymore to help the kids in the Gulf Coast. There must have been a nice donation to Red Cross, as there were over 100 tables there, and if every person donated, it was a good effort as the City matched the donation given at the end of the day. One problem - she wants her Mom and Dad to adopt (a few of) the children that have no home ![]() I only hope one thing, that no matter what anyone or everyone does, that it is going to be enough. Weather forecasters are predicting [predicting, mind you] that in the next 10 years, we will see many more hurricanes at such levels. It's all cyclic...we just don't know how old we're supposed to be to appreciate the fury of them...Methuselah comes to mind. I just want our southern-most friends to think smart...and live long. If this is a "message" of some sort to you to take stock of your life and move elsewhere...then by God/Goddess - go for it. Starting over is a lot better than some of the alternatives that are facing so many. I send my love and prayers to all of you. |

Exactly what I was referring to...we've friends up and down the coastline...and are checking in with them as we can...and asking all to come to Kansas...at least not if for a visit, then the staying home kind... "click" those red shoes, m'friend.... If we ever get "ocean front property"....it will be the newest "gold coast".... ![]() |

Be safe, my friends. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers. Relocation might be something to seriously consider, considering the cycle that we are now in with the hurricanes. I heard on the news tonight that we might go through the entire alphabet and begin all over again before the season ends this year. That's pretty scary. |

Wish i could, inot2b...and especially for your sake. We have another Katrina here. We are catching it as a youngster but, when it hits the gulf and heads for Texas it may go up to at least a cat 3. I understand Galveston is already preparing for evacuation... |

I guess Houston is on the watch list now, too. They have Galveston residence to voluntarily evacuate. We're stalking up on water and canned food.....this global warming....oh, well. My thoughts and prayers are still focused around the last hurricane. |

Hi Everyone, Karen called earlier and she asked that I tell you that she is no dummy! ![]() What she is doing, is buying more plastic containers at Wal-Mart today to keep what little they do have in, (just in case,) and staying put where they are until it looks like they have to leave. If that happens they will drive north and stay "somewhere" for a night or two until the coast is clear to go back to the hunting camp. She wondered if you could all just please blow at the same time on Thursday and see if you can shift that damn hurricane away from Crowley. She sounded really positive, and man do I admire that in her. She is one strong woman I tell you. Wish them all luck folks for again, she and a lot of our other dear friends need it. All the folks in Florida, Texas, good grief! May you stay safe. My lord I don't know about you but I can't take this much longer, and worry myself sick. |

Marge & iliana... I love you, ladies... I truly do. *S* I will be getting out at some point... I'd probably be okay for a weaker hurricane, but I'm in the flood zone for cat 3 and surge zone for cat 4 and above. But right now, the same man who's recommending that other businesses release all but key personnel is keeping this very non-key person buried in paperwork regarding Katrina evacuees... *sigh* But I'm on Daddy-duty this weekend and can't trade off, so I'll be leaving for his place Friday after work at the latest... complete with a very unwilling little Mama Kitty... I've gotta go and leaving her is NOT an option. *S* I hope I can leave earlier... driving in heavy rain/wind isn't my idea of a fun time... neither is being stuck in traffic jams. *S* And I hope Mama Kitty survives all the upheaval... I know I'm losing her... but the thought of hastening the loss hurts. |

![]() But why wait for a hurricane, flood or tornado to come and visit Oregon? We don't have hurricanes here! If you head this way, we simply MUST meet for a poetic lunch even if you choose an official B&B to stay in, I'm only an hour to the coast and an hour to Portland. All this, and still didn't connect this past summer with Larry C, whose Harley somehow didn't make the cruise south of Portland! ![]() |

They're letting the schools out and closing many major companies.....my husband works for an oil services co. and they have told him to take Thurs. & Friday off because they want to take care of the big computers. Anyway....that will give us some time to sandbag the parts of the house that will leak water in. We'll be staying unless there is a mandatory evacuation of our area....so far it is voluntary. Just checking in. We're still here in Houston. We are watching the situation very closely. Even if we chose to leave tonight, we would be stuck in traffic and would just waste precious gasoline. So...we're just waiting and watching. Things are beginning to look very serious and we will be prepared to leave tomorrow night in the middle of the night if necessary. Cell phones here are already giving us problems. Circuits have been busy all day and I can't use mine. For those of you who have offered places to stay....you're all so wonderful. I am not sure yet where we will go if we leave. Most likely, Oklahoma as there are some of my husband's relatives there. Love ya all........jo |

wayoutwalt also lives in Texas...let's keep him and everyone mentioned here in our prayers. This storm, unless it slows down, is going to be the biggest one to hit Texas! Do not think you can ride this one out...it's way too dangerous! Please stay safe and take all precautions! |

Well......I'm still here. Right now, there is no way out of Houston. The traffic is blocked up for 80 miles in every direction. Hopefully, in the next few hours, they will open up the opposite sides of the interstates and that will get things moving. For now, there is just no way out. So we wait. Strangely, I feel fairly calm. ...........jo |

My prayers for all in Rita's path. All I can urge is that you get out of her way. She is one bad b**ch. Please pick a buddy at PiP to keep in touch with so we will all know that you are okay. I am willing to be a phone buddy. Send me an email and I will give you my phone number. Hugs for prayers and safety ... Marti |

![]() Karen, and her family update: As Noah would say, "I'm Doing a Happy Dance!" After a gazillion attempts I finally got through to Karen and her family. They are on I-10 heading back to New Orleans with a full tank of gas, and cursing the traffic. The camp they were in was built about 100 years ago and still standing so they decided because of traffic congestion, to ride out Hurricane Rita there. ![]() I said, "Wow that must sure have been some trip, wish I could have been there with you." She said, "Sharon, it's not really the kind of thing you want to do twice and even you would have needed a drink or two." ![]() So...they are not sure if they have power or not, (they before this hurricane,) but they will need a generator until they get it back. She said, "Well, I just decided it was time to go home to face my next nervous breakdown." They are safe, well, and still funny, so that is a "very good thing!" They are strong folks that is for sure. |

Thanks much for the update, Sharon. Her next nervous breakdown? I'm surprised she has any nerves left. Glad to hear they managed to get through Rita without harm, even though it was no picnic. Karen's strength outdid Katrina and Rita. She's sure mastered survival techniques. Praying for their safe return. Rae |

So glad to hear Karen is okay, Mysteria. That part of the region really took a pounding.....gheeezzz...the things she has had to endure!!! Can't wait until she's posting her work again. Thanks, Sharon. Has anyone heard from Ruth yet? Also, Seymour had relatives in the way of the hurricane....are they okay? Those folks up in East Texas, now I'm wondering. I think Jimmy (James Wesley) is up in the affected area, maybe. |

Jo, so you're ok, then? Our friends in Houston came out fairly well, and I had hoped the same for you. Update, please? |

Karilea.....just some downed tree branches in our yard....shrubs are messed up....maybe some roof damage (but doesn't look too bad). We are safe and cool. We only lost electric for a very short time. Thank goodness, things worked out for us, at least. We're still hanging close to home as there are no businesses open and they have closed school for Monday and Tuesday this coming week. Hope you special friends down here faired as well as we did. Thanks for asking and thanks for all your prayers, SIL. ![]() |

I just wish this were better news. Karen just called me, and said to thank you all for your ongoing concern for her and her family. She said that she would be back with her family at Pipps before you know it. Unfortunately, she got home to find a ransacked house, no power, and a horrific shock of what someone did to her house, and all her missing belongings. It will take time to even clear a path as they left nothing unturned. Tonight I light another candle to give her strength to just get through this disturbing violation. ![]() |

Karen, I know this is hard for you. It feels like a personal attack to have your house turned upside down like that. But you will cope. You're strong (even though you may not admit it at times). And you're alive. And you and your family are together. Take a deep breath and start over! It's going to take awhile but you've got all your friends here behind you. |

Serene One, you will reign supreme yet again. You certainly are being tested in this lifetime, but as the saying goes, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going." In time, you will get your life back on track. In the meantime, you have countless people pulling for you! You have displayed your strength over and over again. I cannot even imagine the horrors that you have been experiencing. Karen, I do want you to know, that I have a tremendous amount of compassion for what you have been going through and I am continuing to pray for your life to return to normal. Mind you, nothing about you or your life is "normal". Everything is extraordinary! Healing hugs of love and Light, Linda ![]() |

Update to you all from our Serenity: I talked to Karen this morning, and she had me in stitches right from the get-go. I called her phone, and after 6 rings no one answered, so I called her cell phone. I said, "Karen your phone was ringing and ringing, why didn't you answer it, didn't you hear it?" She said, "Nope, the pole is gone that the phone line used to hang on silly!" Well we laughed ourselves silly over that sick humor. This was good as it changed some tears to something lighter. She said she misses everyone desperately, and is staring at her monitor, as she has no hard-drive, and wondering when she can get power to get back on line. They can't find their insurance adjuster even to get things dealt with, but are still trying. Apparently all the recipients of N.O. love those MRE's (Meals ready to eat.) She said, she adds water, and this little heating pack and presto - dinner is served! ![]() She hopes to go to her sister's house soon to get online and say hello to everyone, as she still has no power, water, etc. She is just still busy in the darn heat cleaning ![]() So, that is the latest from Serenity, until she checks in. Again, I was supposed to make sure you all know she really, really misses you and can't wait to get back. To see real beauty - look with your heart. ~ Carpe diem ~ [This message has been edited by Mysteria (09-29-2005 03:41 PM).] |

Ok now it is time for Serenity to conjure up a spell that will keep all storms from entering the Gulf of Mexico. Well, at least for the rest of this season. Glad to know she is all right, and hopefully electricity will get to her soon. |

Hey Everybody! ![]() I am indeed back "home"--actually I dunno know where to call home yet, but I'm back at "that house" anyhow. The good news is I haven't killed anyone yet. The bad news is there's still a lotta folks who need killin'. ![]() (And yeah, Ronnie Baby, since we have power now, they took the .22 away from me.) ![]() anyhoo... Still no phone tho, and I can't check my e mail even from here (my mom's) as the phone lines are so mangled, even with DSL, I time out before a page can load. I have so much to say to you all, but little time--but I wanted to hug my angels yet again. ![]() Ya'll have helped me maintain faith in people. I love and appreciate each one of you! |

Hey, Karen, keep that telephone pole in case you have to use it in place of your 22 they took. I can just see you giggling through stinky, sticky heat, heartbreak and misery as the tears roll down your cheeks. I do hope you'll write a book about all this. Love you, gal. Rae |

Karen, I am so glad to see your post. It is phenomenal to me that you are even able to get that up. I always knew you were a pioneer, woman, but I just wish you were not in a situation you had to prove it. Hang in there. Love you, Lady K. ![]() |

Karen, you certainly have been gathering lots of fodder from your experiences to add to your poetic mill! You'll never run out of ideas on what to write! I have often had romanticized thoughts of going back to the pioneering days ~ but after reading what you have been going through, I think I'll stay in the present and enjoy my modern amenities! You are quite a trooper! ~ and you amazingly have kept your sense of humour, wit and charm. You go girl! We're all rooting for you! ![]() Linda |

After watching all of the stuff on tv about Katrina, I couldn't help but remember this thread, and how I clung to it like a lifeline. Thank you, so much, everybody. But my special heartfelt gratitude to Ron--you gave me a home and this place became THE place to find me, and as a result, became my family network. I love you all so much. ![]() |

Yes, this was quite a thread for quite a time. It shows the comraderie, caring and friendship that I believe Ron had envisioned when creating the site. May it never end. |

Well I am just hoping that there will not be another 500 replies, and this will blow over fast. It is so hard for those of you there, but to us that can't do a darn thing it hurts like crazy. I didn't even know there was another on the way. No time for news for days. Wondering if sometimes that is a good thing? Love ya K. |

I was just trying to gather my writings, and realized this is the backbone of it, if "it" actually ever gets completed. And saving it made me realize that even saving this would be an accomplishment for me. Sometimes I just bump stuff so I'll know where they are--and yes, yes, yes, it was a time of comraderie--I mean, Sharon found us over a hardwood swamp!!! Seriously, we had no signal, and then suddenly my hubby's cell phone rings and I'm on three-way calling with two Sharons? Nod. Amazing. And what a way for my people to meet "my people". Lovely. ![]() |

Ah I was just remembering too, remember when I found your Mom, and called your sister-in-law? She couldn't believe how we could do that. I guess she never met a tenacious Irish gal, part Canadian Mountie, who really wanted to be a Cajun KA-ween like her sister-in-law. ![]() It may be time for another 3-way similar to what we had before, if I can figure out this new phone here. ![]() |
