Hey, Reb...do you think that could learn me on this? Can't remember just now, if you ever saw the poetry on this particular piece of wood and strings...but it has particular meaning to our family... and I would post another photo of it, held in my hands, except that picture sucks. |

that's one gorgeous instrument Karilea -- is it a dobro or a resonator? hard to tell in the photo... if it's a resonator -- that would be the site to go to - if it's a dobro.. no.. link the poetry please.. |

I'll link poetry tomorrow - we've storms coming in. It's a Dobro...and it's all in the poetry. Later - I will link you to Fagin... Dad gave it to him - but for now, it is in my hands...and I love every carved inch of it.... and I will take better photos, soon. It's a beautiful piece, and warm in the hands.... |

sorry, Guess I'm not being precise enough -- what I mean to say when I ask if it is a Dobro or a Resonator -- is -- does it have a square neck or a round neck? A square neck is what a lot of people generally refer to as a Dobro (even though a roundneck CAN be correctly called a Dobro) and is generally tuned in an open G meant for being played on the lap with a slide like a steel guitar. A roundneck is what many will call a Resonator -- even though both are also resonators -- and is usually tuned in standard tuning for finger-style play -- but can be used with a slide like any guitar -- and can be tuned in an alternate open G (but not the same tuning as the square neck because it can't stand the tension). If it is a roundneck -- then certainly learning to play a standard six string guitar is what you need to do... |

You know, I wanted to learn to play the guitar real bad. I thought myself to play some of the notes, but that is about it. I have about 4 guitars (including an electric one), but can't play a thing. I bought all kinds of books. I wanted to learn to play country music (some of my favorite songs). I still have those books, but still can't play. Thank you for the link. I will check it out. |

Hey, Sue? There's no playing a guitar bad. Only good! As I told a friend recently, on the first guitar I held? I learned to play the theme song to "Bonanza".... easier than you think! |

Hey Karilea, my fingers are just too short to make some of those chords. I use to have a frined who was trying to teach me how to play the guitar. As a matter of fact, I got two of my guitars from him. But, he died! I haven't touched the guitar since that time. I have thought about getting one of my guitars out, and a book, and trying again. I even bought a book of country songs showing the chords. But, oh my gosh, some of those chords are so hard to make. And, my fingers just won't stretch. |

if your fingers don't fit then you need a smaller guitar but I doubt that's the case -- your hands just aren't used to the shapes -- just practice the chord shapes to build up muscle memory -- don't worry about what they sound like -- for a few weeks anyway. |

I have a beautiful Fender Strat here that i like to polish It just is not one of my gifts, I took lessons, am in awe of the guitar and those who master it and one day would love to own many many more . . . an entire room of instruments. |

Very good website... the only thing I would change is this (learning from another website)... Instead of learning any major scale first, learn the modes! It is very important, I believe to learn the modes. Why? Because once one learns the modes, they know every single major scale! "I have gone away. The bed is cold and empty. Trees bend their boughs toward the earth. And nighttime birds float as black faces." |
