I received this from a fairly reliable source which is substantiated by the link contained within the message..... FYI, Just In Time For The Holidays: Those cute little electronic greeting cards you occasionally get from friends may be a real problem. The ones I'm speaking of are those where there's a link that says "[Some Name] has sent you a greeting card. Go here to get your greeting card". There's a new card company called "FriendGreetings.com". When you get a card notification from them and click on the link, it will take you to their site. You will be notified that you have to install an ActiveX control in order to view the card. When you begin to install, the first thing that pops up is what is known as a "EULA" (End User License Agreement). It is very long, and you will not read it. They're counting on that. When you scroll to the bottom of it and click "Accept," you have agreed to the terms of the EULA. Part of what you will have agreed to is to have monitoring/spyware software installed on your computer which will periodically report a vast array of data back to the card company. The other part that you've agreed to is to have the software send mail to EVERY SINGLE ADDRESS IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK. In short, you've voluntarily agreed to install a virus-type product on your machine. This is not a good thing. See: http://news.zdnet.co.uk/story/0,,t269-s2124528,00.html for details. Since there is no virus in the email, and since you're VOLUNTARILY agreeing to install the ActiveX component, VIRUS CHECKERS WILL NOT CATCH THIS. Just a reminder: DO NOT OPEN EMAIL ATTACHMENTS when you are not expecting them, and DO NOT RUN ANYTHING FROM THE INTERNET WHICH REQUIRES A EULA AGREEMENT. Thank you Balladeer for this warning. I recieved some email the other day from someone here in passions from a friend. This shook me up for a minute because I couldn't remember where their email sent me. I had to go check it out. But, thank goodness it wasn't to this link you mentioned here. So, I am safe. |

Thanks Deer for warning us, I never open things where I'm asked to install some program first. When those things pop up, I always delete the message. Titia Like scattered leaves...my words will flow |

There are also various places that let you download Lavasoft Adware 5.83 free, and here is the link to the page where you can select one: http://www.lsfileserv.com/downloads.html Once this software is loaded on your computer you can catch the little stinkers by running a scan on your computer. It gives you a report of all of them that are using your computer and the option to delete them. Ron explained this once that everytime you click on a site I believe, they in fact get information about you, and he had given a link to his friend who is "out to get these guys" that had marvelous information on his site, perhaps if he stops in he will post that again for folks. When I loaded Adware 5.83, and ran it, I was absolutely shocked that there were 56 different things running on my computer, like Gator, and various other spam insects, LOL I don't know what you call them but they are invasive whatever they are, so running Lavasoft Adware boots them out of your machine if you are interested in loading it. That Hotbar and Incredimail is a big scam as well as they showed up on my Adware more times than enough. Thanks Michael - I guess I won't be sending you a Christmas Card you will just be getting a virtual kiss under the mistletoe - hey Kit, we need a new smilie |

Dang it! I am the one who paid for this puter and the DSL, so I get a bit scorched by all the flashers (ads) and the PC sneaks that are out there. They aren't getting much from my machine, no card numbers etc, as I learned my lesson (hopefully) and do not post any financial data, nor will I use the Bank's online services. Nope, I want to see the thieves face-to-face. Does that suddenly make me old-fashioned? |

I just received an email from someone I don't know. There were two links inside, one was for a greeting card, the other for a program to load the card. I immediately deleted the email. Please check your system everyone!! This email came to my devinepoet@cox.net address and not many people have that one. So be careful!!! |

Some days I avoid ALL the mailboxes, even the POB. Geez, I get so bored with the damn spam and such, I'd like a better mail filter, please. Or a powerful male filter???? |
