Okay, in all the depression and chaos going on in the recent weeks, I wanted to start something lighter. We've done this before, but I want to do it again. What makes you happy? Have you experienced the things that you would list? If not, then will you make a promise to do so right here in this thread, experience it, and come back to talk about it with us? Have fun, everyone! Sometimes the heart needs the solace of solitude and silence. |

Happy......happy......hmmm.....good question. Ok spending any sort of money makes me very happy..preferably large quantities of it. Then that leads to unhappiness because it runs out or I've spent too much. We better scratch that one. Beaches make me happy. Calm water, beautiful sand...then the jelly fish. Nope, can't add that one either. Something that makes me happy is being able to be myself without all the laughter and the act of 'really, I'm ALWAYS this happy' Haha...no wonder it doesn't last long. Friends make me happy. I'm very very fortunate to have a vast network of friends, many of whom I've had for many, many years. They've laughed with me, cried with me, got into trouble with me, and generally been my rocks throughout life. Life couldn't be happy for me without close friends to share life with. Driving down the highway in one of my antique sports cars with music blasting and pedal to the metal....ah what happiness that is !!!! Seeing my baby brother grow and mature into a responsible man of 29. Since our Mom died and I'm 9 years older than him, I feel a great responsibility for him. A couple of years ago, his girlfriend left him, his friend put him in hospital, he smashed his new car with no insurance and lost his job. Somehow, he still managed to keep his sunny disposition. I worried so much, but now he's happily married, has a good job as a mechanic and still makes me laugh. I'm so proud of him. I could go on and on, but I'd better leave space for others. I'm very lucky. I have much in life that makes me happy. If she who dies with the most toys wins, then can I have some toy boys please? |

hmmm what makes me happy? hearing the man of my dreams voice, readig a letter from him, hearing his laugh (the one that brings tears to my eyes and a smile to my face), seeing his smile, watching him breathe, looking in his eyes. Josh makes me happy. Even though he is in College and my parents dont know about him (until they see the phone bill and the ring on my finger) he makes me happier than i have ever been and ever will be. Just knowing he loves me and he is in my heart and I in his makes me overjoyously happy. "If I made you mad today, would you still love me tomorrow?"-Incubus |

What makes me happy? Happiness to me comes in waves, in unexpected moments..for me happiness is the unexpected rainbow..the butterfly that lights on my nose..the kitten that jumps up on my shoulder..the smile from a child..to be absorbed in happiness all the time is not me.. but most of the time what I possess is not happiness but contentment..that I do not have to go on a safari looking for happiness, I know the little kisses of happiness will come at the least expected moment. |

I guess I could have fun in a paper bag. That's what everyone tells me. I am happiest when I dig in the dirt and grow something when I know nothing of how to grow it. I am happiest when my children bring home A's on their report card and they are proud of themselves. I really love it when I can spread laughter like a disease and they don't even know what they are laughing about. It's just a contagious thing with me. I once was nervous in a glass elevator (afraid of heights) and burst out laughing because I was nervous. By the time I reached my floor the whole crowd was laughing and crying. It helped me get through the fear. I am really insanely content late at night when there are no sounds in the house and I can lay my head on my husband's chest and listen to him breath before I fall asleep. This thread brought me happiness! Thank you! Sincerely, Regina |

Happy? Happiness is such a strange emotion. I think that my kids and all their little accomplishments make me happy. Knowing that I have accomplished something I knew I could do, but have never done before. Flirting...I think on a day-to-day basis, I derive much happiness from flirting. There, just a sneak peek into what makes me happy. Don't care what people say |

Thats an easy enough question with a long enough list... Seeing the people I love happy, makes me happy. Loving people who love me back (especially Wesley). Having friends that care. My cat, Dakota (aka Cody). YOU GUYS. Poetry. Music. LIFE when its not being a YOU KNOW WHAT. Whew, sorry about that.... but like I was saying, lots of things make me happy. ~Ali Liefhe alle ten spijte van duivel. |

I think the work 'makes' is the kicker here... nothing MAKES me happy. I'm happy when I'm with someone I love...I'm happy when my writing is going well. I asked my boss once if she was happy. She said no. I said she should find something in her life that would cause her to be happy. She said she's tried to find a man but couldn't. She didn't realize that a man can't make her happy if she can't find happiness on her own first! You can't make happiness...you can be happy.. you can give happiness to others, but nothing can MAKE you happy. |

I think many of you touched upon it in this thread, but Sharon pretty much nailed it, explaining in just a few words my earlier response. When I was a bit past thirty, two events that were separated by seven years came together and forever changed my perspective about happy. Many of you have heard at least bits and pieces of the story. Boots was one of my closest friends, and I introduced her to Don, another good friend. Everyone was surprised when they married, and even more surprised when Boots turned up pregnant. She was 42 when Donnie was born, so it was sadly no surprise that he was afflicted with Down's Syndrome, a hole in his heart, and more ailments than any child should ever face. I was lucky and got to know Donnie better than most because, when he was about a year old, I married his much older sister, Annette. Fast forward about six years. I had quit a lucrative job managing a restaurant chain in San Diego to return to college and learn a little something about a new-fangled thing called computers. "Chasing a dream," my soon-to-be-ex-wife called it. We were already separated, Annette in San Diego and me in Orange County, I was major broke, there was a lot of stress, and I just plain felt miserable most of the time. At one point, I pawned my prized studio camera, an expensive Mamiya RB, for $75 so I could eat. Life pretty much sucked. About a month before I was to graduate, when everything seemed darkest to me, that hole in Donnie's heart finally caught up to him. Boots asked me to write something to say at the funeral, and I don't think I've ever dug deeper for words that could give his brief live some semblance of meaning. Donnie had spent seven years mired in Hell, in and out of the hospital several times a year - so much pain, so much suffering. Only to die. You know what I eventually wrote? And finally realized? Donnie was happy. In spite of all the pain he suffered, in spite of the hills he climbed every day of his life, in spite of a nebulous future he couldn't hope to understand, Donnie was without question the happiest person I have ever known. He laughed just as hard when he fell down as he did when tickled. He smiled and gurgled and screeched for no other reason than he could. Donnie was happiness incarnate throughout his short life, and I have no reason to believe anything changed with his death. I thought I was miserable because I was alone, flat broke, and questioning the choices I made. Donnie reminded me that being miserable, like being happy, has very little to do with external things. External is transitory, fleeting, and whether it brings joy or pain, those are equally fleeting. There will always be people worse off than me who are immeasurably happy, just as there are always people better off who are miserable. Some things please me, others displease, but nothing can make me happy. Happy simply isn't part of a Cause & Effect equation. I'm not even sure Happy is really a condition. I think, instead, Happy is a choice. I spent half my life chasing Happy, wondering why it never lasted beyond the moments of fleeting pleasure. But I was lucky. I had a Donnie in my life, if all too briefly, to teach me his Truths. |

It's easy to 'make' me happy. If I can help to put a smile on the face of someone I care about, I'm happy.... |

I'm happy when I get the chance to go home to NJ to see my children. I don't get to do this as much as I would like! I'm happy when I create something that works. I'm happy riding my motorcycle. I'm happy just sitting on the beach reading. I'm happy when my Hot Peppers grow. I'm happy when I get the chance to help someone that really needs it! And I'm happy when by a slight chance of fate an Angel touches my heart even if it is for a short time. At least I can say I got to feel the vibrant glow inside my chest. The stories here are quite significant in focusing on what happy is derived from. When I can give...I'm happy. |

I wish I could figure out what makes me happy. Ron's story made me happy, it reminds me of my daughter who just pulled herself up to standing this weekend which made me happy, which reminds me of her grandma who helps me all the time and that makes me happy, and all her cousins that hug me everytime I visit make me happy. Then I start thinking about my grandma, who passed away almost three years ago, and then I am sad, and then I remember how she used to stand on her porch as we drove away and again I am happy, and want to tell someone how I am learning about being happy, but the one I love is gone so once more I feel sad, until I go outside and the wind blows and I remember it is fall and I feel happy again. So anyway, that is my experience with happiness. For me it is directly related to sadness and I don't know whether that revelation makes me happy or sad. Oh, and If anyone actually read and understood this...that makes me happy... |

I think the only time I feel shreds of real happiness, are when I see my granddaughters faces when they are loving life. And when they give me the best hugs. Too many things make me sad, they generally outweigh the happy. Sandra |

PLAYING RUGBY!!!!!! Sorry, just a little enthusiastic there... yeah, rugby, Katrina, Kimber, Amy Mae, Mark, the rest of my Jr Girls rugby team (I'm their coach), my horses, my rugby coach and absolute fave teacher (he's such a moron), my coach's friend (he's a moron too), driving, listening to music, reading, and coming to PIP all make me happy. I'm a very depressed teen/young adult and I try to find the best in everything now. [This message has been edited by Skyfire (edited 10-20-2001).] |

I love threads like this one. Everyone needs a reason to smile, and I don't know about anyone else, but things like this make me smile... I'm sure I'm going to be absolutely ecstatic with happiness when all my hard work pays off and I graduate from university about this time next year. I'm going to be happy when my niece/nephew is born in eight weeks time. I'm happy when I'm with my wonderful boyfriend. I'm happy when my favourite television program is on. I was so disappointed when it finished for the season! VW Beetles make me happy. Don't ask, I'm not really sure why myself!! Well.. holidays being over would be first on my list.. it's never a good time for me. With that out of my way.. writing, obviously, makes me happy. My Dave makes me happier than I've been since I don't remember when. Getting lost in a romance novel for hours curled up in a warm blanket. Talking to friends.. laughing and joking around. Ummm... I'm sure there is more.. I just can't think of it at the moment..lol. Tara "My heart is like an open book, for the whole world to read" |

There are happy people on welfare and there are miserable millionaires. There are those who are happy alone and there are miserable couples. A cockatoo wouldn't like Antarctica nor would a penguin enjoy Seram. That said, and knowing that money can't buy happiness, I still would like the funds to go in search of my Seram. heh J There is society where none intrudes, by the deep sea, and music in its roar. |

The number 1 thing that makes me HAPPY is writing poetry! Listening to music, I cant imagine life without music, it is so important to me! Being a good friend to my buddies makes me happy! Having someone to lean on when im down makes me happy. and last but not least, my dear friend Noah makes me soooo happy. He understands me, we see eye to eye, we never fight, he is perfect in my eyes! RP |

Happy.. good question... Music. Music makes me truly happy... like nothing else. When I play music, when I listen to music, lyrics... everything. Music is the key to my soul. It's where I get my muse, and quite often, where I can lose myself. Yes yes, that would be it! I guess the feeling that I'm loved makes me happy. When I meet with my friends after a long time of not seeing one another, and I realise that we stil have lots to talk about, it makes me happy too. Also, I hope to mature - to master the art of not feeling lonely even when I'm alone, coz I know I do enjoy times of solitude. _,,,^.^,,,_ |

Jamie, I agree with you 100%! well said! Being rich won't bring me happiness, it will bring me contentment for a while until there is nothing left to buy. I rather be happy and not so weathly if that is an option. : ) |
