You read the title right. Children's books are not just for children, there are books ranging from Grimm Fairytales to Winne the Pooh which have as such insight and wisdom for children as they do for adults. So find that inner child in you! What are your favourite children's books and why. Winnie the Pooh, it is funny I never rememeber reading Winne the pooh when I was younger. I saw the Disney cartoon. Then about two years I read the two books and I was amazed that I knew most of the stories, it was magical it made the stories timeless. I also read the Tao of POoh which highlights the subtle wisdom within A.A Milne's stories. The little prince. A gift from a very close friend. I was told to read it all in one sitting. It is a short book, so clever. IT shows how the innocence is something to be treasured and how us adults get caught up in silly things. A beautiful book. OH some Roal Dahl books as well, I read them as a child but it has been awhile. I liked "THe twits" and "Witches." not as magical as the first two books I mentioned. |

I had the Beatrix Potter book when I was younger and these days, I still get it out now and read it from cover to cover. It is an awesome read. Cinderella and sleeping beauty always had me when I was younger too. I must say, the Grimm Brothers version of Cinderella is much more entertaining. lol ![]() Psychopathic chickens are plotting against me... |

Grimm's Fairy Tales, by the Brothers Grimm. And not the censured, expunged, or edited by parental concern. The real, nitty-gritty, dark, macabre, highly enjoyable, childrens stories. Also, Through the Looking Glass (aka Alice in Wonderland), by Lewis Carroll. My fav version, that I actually owned at one point, was a pre-1920 edition...didn't really have a lot of publisher info. |

Hmmm ... Well, I would have to say that the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, and Aesop's Fables comprised most of my youthful reading ... wonderful pieces of literature all three (now I read them to MY children) ... I also recall a series which included the book "Serendipity," which I enjoyed as a child more for the art than the storyline -- I can still remember the little purple dragon but for the life of me can't recall the story LOL. The Lord of the Rings was my first serious venture, though ... hefty reading for an 8-year-old but I devoured it like a starving man. I don't think I left my room for three days at least ... ANYTHING by Shel Silverstein ... but especially "The Giving Tree" which I have memorized in every detail ... it was the first story I ever read to my daughter and is still her favorite. The darn thing still mists me up at the end, and I must have told it a thousand times ... ![]() Um ... "A Wrinkle in Time" was good too ... *shutting up now because I have too much more to say * Linda [This message has been edited by Skyfyre (edited 07-14-2001).] |

Children's Books....good subject. My favorite one was given to me when I was about 8 and I was learning to read fairly well by then. It was the Velveteen Rabbit. My grandmother gave it to me and I really cherished that book til it fell apart. Other children books include Dr. Seuss and The Berenstein Bears. I used to have a an old copy of Frank Baum's Wizard of Oz but can't find it anymore. How can you save me? |

Bri - I read kid's books all the time - if I find one I fall in love with...I buy it. This semester I am doing a children's literature paper - I'm reading some classic children's stories right now and loving it... Now, my favourites...(And this is a limited selection lol). Winnie the Pooh AMEN!!!!! Wind in the willows... These ones are classics...they fed my imagination...I have always loved the humanisation of animals.. The Hobbit....man oh man...read that when I was 7...what an impression it made! At the same age I was reading stories by Oscar Wilde such as The Happy Prince, The Remarkable Rocket, The Devoted Friend, The Selfish Giant, The Starchild and others. I read these stories over and over and over and over lol...especially the Happy Prince and The Selfish Giant. Thrived on them...inspired by them...still am. Oscar Wilde is the MAN!! Other classics: Anne of Green Gables... Little Lord Fauntleroy... The Phoenix and the Carpet... Aesop's Fables... HUGE collection of Han C. Andersen (but didn't get into Grimm too much oddly. I liked independent adaptions of the traditional fairytales). The Wishing Tree, a modern book I discovered at 8 in the second hand bookstore and read and reread and reread... Owl at Home - a book for little little kids that I just adored (by Arnold Lobel - every little kid should read it). Frog and Toad adventures...another little kid book, not to mention The Clumpets go Sailing...CUTENESS epitomised...I have always wanted a clumpet.. Ok - I could go on and on..and on.. ![]() I am a refugee of logic...insisting |

The Giving Tree, yes, it's the best. Still makes me a bit misty too. And the other best, is a young children's book "Grandfather Twilight" by Barbara Berger. The most gorgeous illustrations of the moon, very magical. (I still have a thing for Wynken, Blynken and Nod, too) Sandra |

My fifth grade teacher read the chronicles of Narnia to our class daily and that is one of my favorite memories. Anything by Dr. Seuss, though favorites would be...'Go Dog, Go' and 'Are you my Mother? Also by Dr. Seuss, one I read a couple years ago, "Oh, the Places You'll Go'. Cool question, brian! |

"Goodnight Moon" is one I read daily when i was little, and there was also "I'll Love you Forever"... that one I read almost every day too. My mom and dad would sing parts of that book to me ![]() [This message has been edited by Fading Away (edited 07-18-2001).] |

"I'll love you forever" kind of creeped me out.... I mean, the mom crawls into his house with a ladder to hold him? That is BEYOND weird. You are more than the sum of what you consume |
