Ron, I'm impressed. My dog can't write poetry... he sticks with doing my books... a left-brainer I guess. |

For a change, I'm serious here. I've wondered about it many times, even had discussions about it with our local Dark poet Michael. Personally, I think misery stands my writing in good stead for several reasons - one, is my tendancy to ponder the happy times more than when I'm spending time living them. Another is that I like dark thoughts, dark poetry - I've never been one of those rose petals and sunny day kinda happy feeling guys. Darkness can be just as beautiful as the light... |

frankly my dear, i don't . . . really want to know. just kidding. well, sort of. i haven't got a clue, i'm just trying to nurture it, whatever the h*** it is. i can be surprised by what others write and just as surprised by what i write. i should try to explain that? and why is there so much written and it's all different? maybe it's just that we are each a curious individual and we have to deal with that. creativity and imagination can explain most anything . . . Comes from......... Understanding within. Actually I'm not sure, it comes from the feeling of connection between the writer and the reader. It's a love affair of sorts, good poetry is the answer to the question you haven't ever asked. Sven, the answer is it depends on the reader, and the writer. And in this readers case good poetry is here. Take care love as always Mushy ![]() Take back the hope you gave,- I claim Only a memory of the same Robert Browning |

ah, but how do we know that the writing is honest dreamkeeper?? we don't. . . or do we? Are we forced to take the poet at his/her word and belive that they are writing from life? I liked your response, that's why I'm highlighting it with my question. . . I agree with you, honesty is a quality of some of the best writing. . . ![]() ---------------------------------------------------------- To the world, you may only be one person. Well, I think it's a difference of surface writing and depth. I think when we face ourselves for exactly who we are, including our imperfections, faults, etc....and are willing to see our deepest parts of ourselves it shines out beautifully. Takes us to a deeper level of seeing, understanding and writing. ![]() To capture and live a moment is truly living |

I would say the best poetry comes from "truth". Now, this could be the actual truth as perceived or observed by the poet or those with influence over the poet. Another truth could be arrived at by the poet creating a situation in his, her or its mind and totally immersing him/her/itself in that situation to derive the truth that would be. And that's quite enough deep philosophy for a post-work, pre-bath Colin! Suburbia is where the developer bulldozes out the trees, then names the streets after them. - Bill Vaughan |

i think the best poetry comes from observance of nature, nature poetry to me is some of the most soul-ish...that and the poetry of misery as Christopher mentions for the same reason,it goes into the soul and miserable dark poetry people seem to THINK alot, about life and everything, sometimes rosey and cheery seems fake and superficial, but dark is always from the soul and the deepest darkest hallways in the mind. sammi Do i contradict myself?Very well i contradict myself.I contain multitudes.~walt whitman |

I think it comes from a place inside us.......emotions play a key role in what I write......any kind of emotion.....and from dreams.........or the lack there of...........I think the best comes from your own experiences.......things you know......things you feel.....it can be a process of healing or venting......letting go or holding on..........I think it's very personal to each person.......I never can write, just to write......it has to be what I'm feeling.......that can be directly influenced by what someone I love is feeling too.........it affects me. That's my 2 cents worth ![]() |

YES!! Dark poetry can be superficial!! The darkness has it's own set of much over used clichés,but i do feel that Darker poetry does deal with deeper more often hidden corners, which makes it sincere....when it is really a serious bit of poetry. Fair enough, misery works, isn't the saying "the sweetest songs are sung with breaking hearts" or somesuch..? I have written some of my better poetry while miserable, but I do have to say that quite a few of the pieces that everyone enjoyed were not inspired by misery, but rather by longing. I suppose in one way that could be construed as misery (especially if you don't get what you were longing after LOL), but I think a good portion of what I wrote was under duress from sensations of extreme giddiness and, dare I say it, hope. ![]() I might also point out that many of the pieces which are considered "masterpieces" of poetry have anything but misery as their source: what about "The Road Not Taken" by Frost..? Reminiscent, yes, but miserable..? Hardly. "Ozzymandius?" Humorous, even. Anyway ... hehe (Just had to disagree with Michael LOL) Linda |

When something happens that moves one. Be it happy or sad. It just grabs you and you have to pick up a pen and write about it. Or for those who don't know what a pen is, sit at the computer and start typing. |
