Hi everyone. I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right place or not, so please feel free to move it if it's not in the right spot. I'm going to New Orleans in 3 weeks for a week. I'll be staying at a hotel near the Superdome. I'm looking for any helpful hints ya'll can give, where the hot spots are, places I don't wanna miss, places I can miss, what the climate will be like, anything you wanna indulge me with. Thanks a lot for your help. I'm really looking forward to going even though I will miss all of you here while I am gone.  Dawn |

I can offer you this as a virtual guarantee. *G* The weather will be HOT and HUMID... in the 90's for both. And unless you're going to some of the finer restaurants (which are definitely worth it if you have the $$$) you won't need much in the way of formal attire... dress cool and comfortably... and make sure you have good walking shoes! New Orleans has bunches of tours... from plantation homes to cemeteries. *S* You can book most of the tours in any of the major hotels. http://www.insideneworleans.com and http://www.bestofneworleans.com are some web sites worth visiting to give you ideas. A couple of things not to miss... mainly because they're cheap or free and give you a great feel for New Orleans... walk down Poydras to the Riverwalk (where you can find shopping and food galore) and take the ferry across the river. It's free, so you can ride back and forth as much as you want. *S* At Poydras and St. Charles, catch the trolley and ride it to the end of the line on Carrollton... you'll be going through the Garden District (and the Camellia Grill is not a bad place to appease your tastebuds before the return trip). Definitely plan on a meal at Mother's... it's on Poydras just a few blocks up from the river. You'll understand why locals line up for their poboys! *G* Definitely visit the French Market... it's pretty much combination flea market and farmer's market. And Central Grocery is right across the street... well known for their muffalettas. I don't know your musical tastes, but Preservation Hall has this great bunch of ole geezers that can still play the jazz! And O'Flaherty's Irish Channel Pub has both excellent food and music... Danny, the owner, doesn't sacrifice authenticity and is dedicated to "passing the music down". And Ralph & Kacoo's is directly across the street if you're hankering for some seafood. *S* Hope this helps... it's been quite a few years since I lived there. Like PDV said, serenity (and Poetic Knight, too... I think) live there and can give you the up-to-date scoop! *S* |

Thank you all for your help. Another thing I'm concerned about is the crime rate. At first I was hearing that the French Quarter is only going to be 12 blocks from my hotel I was like oh that is great I can easily get there. But then I heard about the crime rate and now I'm scared to leave the hotel at all. Also are New Orleans city blocks short or long? And I know this is a shot in the dark, but does anyone know much about hanicapped access to varioous places? I am physically disabled and use and electric wheelchair. Dawn |

Dawn, contact their Chamber of Commerce and you will get a lot of valuable information for the price of a stamp, at the very least. I visited New Orleans in December 1999, did not run across any hassles, and had a tremendous time. As was said before, wear comfortable [read expandable] clothes because the food is fantastic and you will be hungry around the clock.... do avail yourself of the hospitality accommodations of the hotels [they will hold your valuables, extra cash, etc] and only take with you what you need when you are out and about. And don't forget to wear your smile...it's contagious down there! |

Dawn: Crime is high in New Orleans, but tourism is an important industry for the city... The sheer crowds on Bourbon Street protect you... It makes a difference whether you're alone or with someone... My neighbor and I used to walk home from the French Quarter down Canal to our apartments past Carrollton (several miles) in the wee hours... but I don't think I would have made that trip alone. And don't wander down some alley! Basically, use common sense... you can go almost anywhere "touristy" during the daytime... but use more caution at night, especially if you're going off the beaten paths. *S* For instance... The area you're staying in isn't real populated after people leave work unless something is going on in the Dome... you may feel more comfortable calling a cab to take you "home" at night. And like Lady said, don't carry valuables about unnecessarily. Most of New Orleans is fairly readily available to wheelchairs... Some of the older streets in the Quarter might not be ramped, but the curbs are low... and of course, everything more modern was built with accessibility in mind. The streetcars might present a problem, though... I don't think they're equipped with lifts. And the blocks tend to be short to medium... nothing like Manhattan's avenues! LOL Locals are friendly for the most part... just don't expect any clerks on Canal Street to get in a hurry or they'll treat you to some attitude. *G* But cabbies, hotel employees, restaurant employees... all are helpful and wanting you to enjoy their city. If you like antiques, Royal Street runs parallel to Bourbon. Some of the shop doors may be too narrow for your chair, but others are great for browsing (which is all my budget allowed. *G*) [This message has been edited by suthern (edited 06-07-2001).] |

Dawn--I am sorry...been meaning to e mail ya but my had my pc broke down for awhile--if you've seen the news perhaps you know it's flooding here...right now? I'm surrounded by water...but there's a break in the storms so I thought I'd sneak a peak...here's a link to our local newspaper..it has a good entertainment section-- www.nola.com Send me some more info on what your particular hobbies are...there's a lot to do here...we have casinos and lots of nightclubs, Jazzland theme park a great zoo and aquarium...and heh heh...a remarkable levee system...knock on wood while it's still dry! more later! |

Oh wow...and ditto suthern on everything she said...the quarter is fine..oh...and if anybody on the street ask you "I bet I can tell ya where ya got dem shoes?" The correct answer is "dey on my feet!" LOL....and don't be afraid...just use common sense..try to stay well lit areas...if you are into clubs..take cabs--ask the people at your hotel...new orleans is very friendly and in fact the crime rate has gone down..more common sense? If you do go wandering off alone...the cemetaries are fascinating...but? I would stay away from St. Louis #5 at sundown...well worth a visit though to see the tomb of Marie Leveau (senior)sigh...I could go on and on..OH..and the "ghost tour" is fascinating...and should you want to see other things..there's Chalmette Battlefield...the swamp tours are great..OH...and if you are an antique lover? Do check out magazine street! |

Serenity and everyone else, Thank you all so much for the info. I'm just mainly so excited about going and seeing my friends that I only see once a year that I really don't care that much what I do. That ghost walk sounds great, I love old cemetaries. Any idea how far that is from the Superdome? I'm also very big into Shopping. But of course my budget is not going to allow me to do much shopping either. I also love dancing, don't get to do it much. Im going to a National Conference and Im' not sure how much time I will have for fun, but believe you me, I plan on making tons of time for fun as this may be the only time I ever get to New Orleans. Im' really having mixed feelings about going, the long trip is going to be miserable. But hopefully once I get down there I will have a blast and I will still have my friends waiting here at home for me to return. I leave in 6 days!!!!! I really can't wait. |

If you are flying down, make sure that your health is in good shape. They don't circulate the air in cabins any longer, and if someone has a cold, chances are, you will get it. Take lots of vitamins and get yourself "healthy". You are going to have the best time. There is a candy shop in the French Quarter, I forget the name, but the BEST chocolates can be found there... I'd go back for that, alone! And I'm not a "Sweets" person! |
