Can someone please explain to me why so many people are rude on the internet? It seems funny people don't seem to act like that when there is no computer there. |

Ah, rudeness on the internet. My opinion?? I think people don't really percieve the internet as real life. When talking to someone simply by e-mail or some screen name, they don't really percieve that person as being real and having real feelings. When in person, whenever one hurts another, you must live with the look on their face, the pain in their eyes. Also, the on the internet, people are much more daring, I've noticed. Why, I got to know my first boyfriend that way, and I don't think he would have had the guts to talk to me in person. Anyways, when people are more daring, they tend to be more rude and bullheadish. (pst, is that a word? anyways..). So, that in short, is why I think people are rude on the net. ------------------ *Krista Knutson* "If I could be an angel, I'd make your every wish come true. I think it's harder to know when people are teasing on the internet. In real life, I can say something with a grin and a twinkle in my eye but on the internet, I have to be more careful. I agree with Alwye though, there is an anonimity to the internet that allows people to say things without fear of retribution. |

What - we have no voice inflection here??? 'Tis true - you can say pretty much anything out loud - if you say it with a smile and your tongue in cheek. When your words are to be interpreted on their own merit, though - That's another story altogether.... and the words you pen will last forever - Remember that..... ![]() |

I think that it is because they don't have to face the consequences. ------------------ Shall I indulge in flights of fancy hampered by clipped wings? DreamEvil© |

I fully agree with PDV and Nan. It is very difficult to communicate the tone of sarcasm and playfulness in the written word. Part of my work is teaching business communication, and one of the major topics we discuss in training is Email use and abuse - how to say what you mean, the way it is meant, and what not to say. The golden rule I give my folks is: Wait a day. If you recieve and email whose tone urges you to want to respond immediately, write a draft and hold it for a day. Then reread it the next day, in a different frame of mind. Unfortunately, belletin board areas such as this wonderful place, where real time commentary are its liveblood, do not give themselves easily to this rule. I think that not facing the consequences of what you write, or how it is written is a factor, but for a small percentage of individuals only. Most simply feel that their mindset will come through in thier messages and do not realize that what they write can be read in an entirely different light. One more thing: When I read something I read it with the idea in mind that the person is not trying to be rude, but playful. In other words, I give the writer the benefit of the doubt until or unless I find out otherwise. ------------------ Yesterday is ash, tomorrow is smoke; only today does the fire burn.
