My local Librarian brought my attention to a book today while I was sitting here surfing the net. I didn't read the book in detail, but I can tell you I don't like it; and I don't think it is appropriate for children. It was in the children's book section. Maybe that was library error or maybe that was author classifation error...etc..I don't know..Whatever kind of error anyone could think of...ANYWAY! ![]() The author: R. Caldecott The title: The Babes in the Wood Look for it if you have time....read it..or if you know it already, tell me what you think. It isn't a very long book, so it shouldn't take long. Also, has anyone else ever read any books by R. Caldecott? The Librarian told me he was or is very popular. Thanks ahead of time. I posted this here in case it gets messy. LOL! Okay..So I'm giving this a boost, and I'm probably gonna get flack for it either in someones grumbly brain or through messages on here. ![]() ![]() ![]() Has no on responded to this because it isn't interesting or is it because SOME went to look for the book, and haven't read it or thought about it yet. Are we doing this and waiting to gain an opinion before we comment or is it that just no one is interested. ![]() ![]() Nothing can deter a poet, for he is actuated by pure love. Hi Temptress -----I work so many hours on the net -----and am a freelance writer by trade I do not know the book and seldom get to the library unless I am researching for things for my books. I have found icky yucky books for children through many years -- and basically, all I can say is -- some people do not know children. I will trust your opinion on the above-mentioned book ----and should I run across it, I will check it out. My kids' loved the Berenstein Series. Can still remember way back when when my middle son was four HOw he loved "I was so Mad." By Mercer Meyers --) This is s great discussion though. And, of course I have my children story with graphics on the net for free at www.tipsfortop.com/fourbears.html Take some time and let your child browse with that one ----it is safe. LOL warmly, netswan |

Caldecott was an English illustrator and is viewed by some as the founding father of illustrated children's books. One of the most prestigous awards in children's literature is the Caldecott Medal. "Babes in the Wood" was illustrated by Caldecott in 1879. His illustrations sometimes were classified as "racy." So as to the placement of the book, it is correctly in the children's section. As to its appropriateness for children... that would be up to the parent. The book is from a different time and culture and should be viewed in that light. |

How interesting Mike. Thanks for the input. Libraries are not censored and children that go in by themselves can do just about anything they want and read what they want as long as they are being quite. Librarians are not babysitters. Though, I have not seen the book - I would not be happy to tell my kids GO to the children's section and that is the only place you can go and trust that they would not see things young eyes should not see. For my kids would not have stepped one further out of the boundaries I gave them while I was in the mystery section. ---) Just chatting - beavis and southpark was something I wish my kids never had to see ------though they are older now and say didn't hurt them any to see them. netswan |

I haven't read the book i'm afraid. i do think though that if it is in the childrens section then it is up to the parent to decide rather than taking it out or something. i think the idea is just an example of the censorship question which is always argued about. i think that whatever the book/film/piece of music, it will effect people in different ways and in most cases while there may be some negative effects, the negative effects will not be purely because of the piece but down to the mindset of the individual. for instance (extreme i know) but if i read in a novel a murder committed with a kitchen knife i could copy it. i wouldn't because i am mostly a sane person and i also think my girlfriends mother might think it best if she never saw me again! the point is though if some one is vunerable enough to be negatively influenced by art then it is the duty of society and in this case the parent or gaurdian to prevent it. |
