If you don't know by now, our fearless leader, Ron, lives in Colon, Michigan! Here's a challenge in the form of a scavenger hunt! Find out WHY it's named that....now you can't send Ron an email...that's cheating....

Also, let's hear some other towns/cities names that are too weird..such as:

Bad Axe, Michigan

Tukwilla, Washington

Sharon, Pennsylvania

Yazoo, Mississippi

This could be a long project....keep your kids busy this summer!!! LOL

DeKalb Illinois.  Scavenger hunting eh? Sounds good to me! *looking around for that Atlas, I know it's here somewhere*

Because it's located in the bowels of Michigan?? or maybe it's where independent type sentences are, beclaused... well... at least they didn't call it "Semi-Colon".. because I know that every body there couldn't possibly live up to that sort of punctualization....um.. punctuation... Besides, then Ron would have to be a truck driver... I don't think he's cut out for that...

Colon, Michigan was founded in the mid 1830’s by the Schellhouse family, one of the first to settle in the area. It was named by Lorensie Schellhouse when he opened a dictionary at random and saw the word: "colon." He indicated the town would be named that, as he felt the lake and the river resembled the shape of a colon.

Great job, Echo!

Did anyone realize this small, rural community holds the title of Magic Capital of the World because of a very strange history?

Interesting topic... I must add my 2 cents.

Well, this isn't really a town, it's more like a speck on the map, but it does exist. It's called Big Ugly Creek, West Virginia.

Need I say more?

Well, though I live no where near this town, I have always found it a quite strange and unusual name....Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.  And since you asked for the meaning too here it is...it is a rather interesting one. Apparently the early settlers were overwhelmed at times by the huge numbers of nearly-invisible gnats that infested the region. The nickname for these gnats was "punkies", a name you'll still find in a good dictionary. So Punxsutawney is merely the "town of punkies."

Ok, I think that much more needs to be told about the great state of Michigan. . .

It's the only state that's actually NORTH of Canada. . .yes, if you look at a map, you'll see that part of southeastern Michigan is NORTH of the city of Windsor, Ontario.

It's the only state that has 2 peninsulas.

It's the home of one of the world's largest bridges, the Mackinac Bridge spanning the Straits of Mackinac and joining the two peninsulas.

It's not only the home for the Big 3 auto makers, but also Gerber baby foods, Steelcase Office Furniture, Amway, and a whole lot of other companies.

We're the home not only to the Magic Capital of the World in Colon, but the Christmas Capital in Frankenmuth, the Cherry Capital in Traverse City, and the Furniture Capital in Grand Rapids.

We're the home of the three-time Stanley Cup winning Red Wings (WOO HOO!) and the current 2000 NCAA Basketball Champion Michigan State Spartans (GO GREEN!!!)

Not only that, but every person living here in Michigan has 2 maps of the state with them at all times. . .at the ends of their arms!!  LOL

So thank you, and thus ends the one year of Michigan History that I thought I would never use. . . LOL

You also forgot one of my favorite places in the whole world (beats the crap out of Disney Land and Universal Studios):

Holland, Michigan (would that be the Wooden Shoe Capital?)

And while I can't vouch for it's authenticity, they say you can stand anywhere in the state of Michigan and be no more than a mile from a body of water. (Can you say "HUMID?" I knew you could!   )

All I know about Sharon, PA is that the original settlement developed about 1802 around a gristmill. It was laid out in 1815 and was probably named for the biblical plain.

Jeffrey:

NC legend tells that Nags Head was given its name by a tactic pirates used to lure ships to run aground along the North Carolina Outer Banks.  It is said that lanterns were hung from the necks of horses (hence "Nags") and those navigating the ships, thinking the lantern was from a lighthouse, would find themselves stranded in the shallows.  Just thought you might like to know.

I don't know about towns, but I once visited a town in Texas to deliver something and the street signs were.

This Way
That Way
Wrong Way
Other Way
God's Way (that one led to a Church)

The directions they gave me were... "take This Way, to That way...then you take Other Way to ...

Well you get the idea..

Two tourists were driving through Louisiana. As they approached Natchitoches, they started arguing about the pronunciation of the town. They argued back and forth until they finally stopped for lunch. As they stood at the counter, one tourist asked the blonde employee, "Before we order, could you please settle an argument for us? Would you please pronounce where we are . . . very slowly?"

The blonde girl leaned over the counter and said,"Burrrrrrrr, gerrrrrrr, Kiiiiing."

LOL

We have a similar argument over the pronunciation of a nearby village called Leonidas. Our weather reporters on the local radio pronounce it phonetically, with a long "e" and a long "i" (Le-on-i-das). The residents, however, pronounce it with a silent "i" (Le-on-das).

Unfortunately, I doubt the argument will be so easily settled - there are no fast food chains there.

LOL at those names!!!
There are a few weird ones over here in the UK too but I think the names are too ancient to trace.
There is one place called Pratt's Bottom (Pratt meaning idiot), another called Peas Pottage (pottage as in soup) and one island off Scotland called Lewis With Harris. And let us not forget the weird and wonderful names that can be found all over Wales, such as Andypandy, Merthyr Tydfil, Llanymddyfry, Y Rhws, Llanwrtyd Wells, Ty Rhiw, Cefin Cribbwr, Cwmavon, as well as just Cwm (no I didn't forget a vowel in any of them but maybe they did LOL) and many many more. As for the pronounciation... well I was told it can only be achieved with a lot of phlegm in the throat EWWW LOL.

'nuff said....

Let me ask this.... how many states are there without a place called "Burns"?

Here's a few strange ones:

Truth or Consequences, NM (renamed after the game show - originally was "Hatch" - big improvement, eh?)

Any town in Hawaii
Boonville, CA
Yreka, CA (Not Eureka, that is another place down the road)

Yesterday is ash, tomorrow is smoke; only today does the fire burn.

I'm from the Golden State my friend.  The state which thousands of folks from other states realized was better, and moved to. In fact, if any more of y'all move out this way, we are in danger of breaking off and floating away (many don't think that is such a bad idea...)

I've had the pleasure of visiting all, and living in a lot of the 50 states and I have been to Michigan once... damn 'squita was as big as my fist, we chatted and decided he could suck out a quart of my blood and we would call it even...  Wouldn't have agreed to it if he hadn't had that gun...

Yesterday is ash, tomorrow is smoke; only today does the fire burn.

All of you Michiganders (I was pleasantly surprised!) forgot our state's most beautiful asset...the U.P. I was born and raised near Marquette, an ideal place for a childhood...my family is still there, plus one of my daughters moved there last year. They all hate to come downstate...too much traffic, and too many people, they say.
Once you cross the Mack, and head out Route 2, it's like you've entered a different world. The U.P. has Tequamenon Falls, the Pictured Rocks, Presque Isle, the ruggedly beautiful coastline of Lake Superior, just to name a few of the attractions. I love to visit there in the summer, but don't think I could ever live up there again because the winters are soooo cold and last so long.

I still get teased once in a while about being a "Yooper", but it doesn't bother me a bit. Heck, we're famous. Jeff Daniels, also a Michigander, has a theatre in Chelsea, called the "Purple Rose", where I saw the play, "Escanaba in Da Moonlight". It's about a bunch of U.P. guys during hunting season...hilarious! It's playing at the Gem in Detroit now, and it's going to be a movie.

Nice to know there are some Passion people so close by.

So...did anyone ever find out why Colon is named as such? I've heard of towns being named in awfully strange ways, like whatever word comes to mind, the temperature, or a misunderstanding of the intended name. Are any of those the reason behind the naming of Colon?

Um -- well, thanks to native Americans (the Seminoles, I believe) we have Apopka, Florida ... "Apopka" translates literally to "Big Potato" ...

Can't think of any more right now, but I'll keep the gears turning ...

Michael asked me to throw in Los Banos, CA -- "The Bathrooms" (or baths) ... hehehe

I took a friend to a local comedy club the other night, and one of the standups did a whole bit about Michigan place names. Naturally, I thought of y'all and laughed twice as hard as anyone else in the room.

"Here you are right now," he said, holding up his palm to simulate the Michigan mitt and pointing a to point midway, near the base. "Right between 69 and Climax. Not too bad a place to be on a rainy night…"

"Oh, and here's the Upper Peninsula," he continued, sticking his tongue out over the raised hand. Then he flipped his hand over, palm inwards, pointed towards the back and said, "And of course, here's Colon…"

As to where we got our village name:
quote:
In 1829, Roswell Shellhous traveled from Ohio to the newly organized St. Joseph County where he built a two-room log cabin on the Nottawa prairie. Roswell Shelhous moved on to Illinois, but he had encouraged his brother Lorancie to come to the area. Lorancie Shellhous arrived at the present-day location of Colon in 1830, and bought the land on Swan Creek which later became the mill site. Lorancie went back to Ohio after purchasing the land and returned with his family and two other brothers (George and Martin) in May of 1831. That spring he built a cabin at the mill site and, after making his own plow, planted six acres of prairie " ... growing vegetables, melons, and broom corn". In the fall of 1831, Charles Palmer arrived and purchased 300 acres east of Swan Creek. Palmer, his wife and six children lived out the winter of 1831-32 with Lorancie and his wife and their five children. The following spring, Palmer built his own cabin, alleviating what must have been, at the least, a tense situation for the two families. Colon's first industry began that spring when Shellhous constructed a saw mill at the dam where Palmer Lake flows into Swan Creek. Shellhous's mill produced 1,200 feet of lumber before the dam was washed out that year. Lorancie sold his mill site to his brother Martin, in order to finance the building of a new dam. After surviving a severe attack of the "fever and ague", the tiny settlement progressed toward becoming a village. In 1832 George Shellhous and a man known as Indian Trader Hatch survey that plat of land that was later to become the village which lies between Palmer Lake and Sturgeon Lake. It was then that the name for the new village was decided upon. Lorancie Shellhous turned randomly in a dictionary to the word "colon" and remarked, "We will call it Colon, for the lake and river correspond in their relations exactly to the position of the colon."

I can only surmise, had the positions been less exact, I might well be living in semicolon today.

LOL at the ones Skyfyre named...

I mentioned in a previous post that some towns got their name due to a mispronunciation of the intended moniker. I remember reading about a town that was supposed to be named Cohenville, after the founder. However, he had a Southern accent and the town was named Cornville.

By the way, supposedly some little town here in MN is considering changing its name to Ventura, after our wonderful governor...

Could be worse, I suppose.
