This is kind of a follow up to the one thread I posted here. As some of you know, last weekend I attended the Miss Junior Teen Pennsylvania Pageant in Harrisburgh, PA, and if you read my earlier post in this forum, you would know I wasn't looking forward to the opportunity of 'being fake'. The pageant was a 2 day experience. Saturday afternoon I participated in the Optional Talent Contest in which I read a poem I previously posted in Teen. I was very upset because I wanted to memorize it to prove something to myself and I only had 20 minutes to do so. Not only that, but I got very upset since that was the first time I was on stage in almost 4 years and didn't do half as good as I should of. Sunday was tough. I had my Poise & Appearance Competition very early in the morning and we had to come from a different hotel because the Pageant people screwed up. We were running a little late and as I was putting my shoes on in the car, I asked my mom, "Do I have to wear any makeup?". She said no and I was really happy. In case you don't understand Poise & Appearance, each girl gets on stage and says something like, "My name is so and so from so and so and someday I hope to do so and so." I was 3 minutes late so they pushed me to the end, which was fine with me since I didn't have my speeched planned out. Finally it was my turn and I went up there and said: Good morning my name is Susan _______ and I'm proud to be representing my hometown of ______ _____, PA. I belive beauty comes from within, and no amount of makeup can hide what you truly are on the inside. That is why I am comfortable enough with my inner beauty to come before you today with absolutely no makeup on. Someday I hope to run a beauty pageant where young girls can also be comfortable enough with who they are on the inside to not feel the pressures to wear makeup. Thank you. I never had so many people clap for me in my entire life  . Although the judges didn't seem to like it so much. Guess I'm just not 'The All-American Girl' type they were looking for. I'm the kind of girl who doesn't wear makeup to state pageants . Go figure.So in the end I did get my nails done and my hair dyed blonde but I didn't give in completetly. I hung on to my personality and made the people I care most about proud. Oh yea, and I was 'famous' for the rest of the day, I loved the attention  .In the end I didn't place or anything, but I think I got them pretty good. ~Susie "Do you love me because I am beautiful, or am I beautiful because you love me?" ~Cinderella |

That's cool, Susie! I'm glad to hear that you went as yourself and not a human mannequin (you know what I'm saying there?). Sounds as if the audience liked it too. Thanks for keeping us posted, and I'm glad it wasn't as bad as it could have been! Elizabeth Why ME??? |

Well done sweetheart but you know makeup doesn't change who you are inside just makes some people more comfortable with how they present the outside... I do like to wear makeup when I'm going somewhere special but even then I manage to eat my lipstick and I forget to check in a mirror so I usually end up with a shiny nose or something..*g* The one thing I can't go without is my perfume because the smell makes me smile.. I can envisage the look on the judge's faces....good for you !! HUGS |

You came in First Place in that pageant... you just don't know it yet.... but I do!!! Congratulations! Wear your crown proudly. You deserve it. Thanks for sharing this... I hope other young ladies read it and learn from you. |

Angel...I am sending this to a friend. She enters her daughter in those pageants and Destiny is only 8. They slather all kinds of goop on her face and make her look like a very small adult. She is incredibly beautiful without it. I am sure you are too. I hope her mom understands the importance of being herself rather than a edited version of what others want her to be. You have a mountain of courage and an unsurpassed character in proclaiming your SELF. You get the crown, the roses, and all the applause. Poetry~ Words falling on paper, painting a dream. Shawna R. Sorry it's took so long to reply, I had a rough last night. Elizabeth, Definitely not as bad as it could have been, I almost had fun .PdV, Thank you so much. You guys are the judges I hold in highest opinion. Irie, Thank you. I would love to have the chance to replace a few judges .Rainbow Girl, Yes, I know. But makeup makes me feel uncomfortable so I felt if I went up there without it everyone could see me for who I truly am. I don't think there is anything at all wrong with wearing makeup, it's just not for me . And, I can't leave my house without using some Happy perfume. The looks on their faces were priceless .doreen peri~ Wow, I didn't even expect to win . I will wear the crown proudly, of course .Wildchild~ Thank you. I saw a lot of little girls (one was about 6 with way too much makeup on). She looked about 10. I think by doing that you aren't teaching the child to be proud of the way they are natrually but only to accept society's image of 'beauty'. Nan~ Thank you so much .
