You Might Be a Minnesotan If: You laugh out loud every time you see a news report about a blizzard shutting down the entire east coast. You are proud that your state makes the national news 96 nights each year because International Falls is the coldest spot in the nation. You are excited the first time it snows, and then slap yourself because you know by April you'll be insanely sick of it. You have gotten frostbitten and sunburned during the same week. You wear shorts when it's 50 degrees outside in March, but bundle up and complain in August when it goes below 60. Every January from age 2 to 13, you let your older siblings talk you into putting your tongue on a steel post. You've had at least 5 snow or "cold" days off from school throughout your childhood school days. You remember going Trick-or-Treating in 3 feet of snow. (on more than one occasion for me...) Your 4th of July Family Picnic was moved indoors due to frost. You learned to drive a tractor before the training wheels were off your bike. At least 50% of your relatives work on a dairy farm. A Friday night out is taking your girlfriend shining for deer. You think that Deer Season is an official school holiday. Your dad always listens to 'CCO in the car. You played Duck duck, gray duck when you were little. (IT IS NOT DUCK DUCK GOOSE PEOPLE!) You know what and where Dinkytown is. You've seen Rocky Horror Picture Show in Uptown. You think the state motto is Minnesota: "10,000 Lakes and 10,000,000,000,000 Mosquitoes". .... You don't think it strange for the state to pay a bounty for killing the state mascot - the gopher. You stopped going to the State Fair between ages 15 and 30, but still miss Machinery Hill. The first time you saw "Grumpy Old Men" you thought it was a documentary about your uncle. You know what lutefisk and lefse are. (I've eaten lefse, but won't touch lutefisk....poor Abrahm had to cook it at work..ewe..) Fireworks still amaze you. You couldn't wait to see "Mighty Ducks (1, 2, and 3) because WOW! It was filmed in Minnesota!. ...and then you found about 100 discrepancies throughout each of the movies. Everyone you know has a cabin. Even though you may hate Minnesota sometimes, you don't feel at home anywhere else. People always make fun of your "accent" (what accent???). You drink POP and are proud of it. (yeah, what's up with this 'soda' thing?) You know people who pronounce Duluth, "Doo-loot". You know what "cow tipping" is. (Yep...about half my relatives have participated in this sport) Even if you don't talk like the people in "Fargo," you know at least one person who does. You measure distance in minutes ("How far away is Valley Fair from here?" "About 20 minutes.") Snow tires come standard on all your vehicles. Just ain't worth taking them off for only two months. Driving on any bridge over the Mississippi scared you as a little kid (and maybe still does). You can name the 4 seasons: fall, winter, spring, and road construction. You carry jumper cables in your car. Your idea of a trip out east is to Wisconsin, and a trip out west is to South Dakota, and down south means Iowa. When visiting California, you laugh at their "rivers" and oak trees and gophers. You used to think the top of the Metrodome was soft and puffy like a cloud. You own at least one item that says, "I'd rather be fishing". You have ever had an entire telephone conversation with someone who dialed a wrong number. (LOL, yep, I've done this too!) You have a nickname for your chain saw and you pat it on the fuel tank at the end of a hard day's sawing. You may not have actually eaten it, but you have heard of Lutefisk. You have eaten at least one White Castle hamburger, one Nut Goodie, and Salted Nut Roll. Hehehe.... < !signature--> *Krista Knutson* "You never lose by loving. Warning to all you non-Minnesotans out there (I pity you people, I really do ) but Lutefisk is gross.. Imagine a one hundred dead fish packed into one giggling, slimy dish, that's lutefisk, LOL. That was hilarious, Krista. But would you be surprised to learn that about half of those would be equally true for any state in the Midwest? |

I can't believe how true these are! At a church retreat I went to, I made friends with some girls from Iowa, who teased me about my MN accent. Mentioned it to my junior English class, where the teacher replied, "People from Iowa shouldn't make fun of anything." And do any of you remember the Halloween Blizzard? Elizabeth Why ME??? |

Yep Elizabeth, I remember it! Man, it was a chore to wade through thigh deep snow (I was little then) and trick-or-treat! I think my dad ended up carrying me... *Krista Knutson* "You never lose by loving. You always lose by holding back." -Barbara DeAngelis |

It was the year I was nine--I remember the snow blowing around as my cousins, sister, and I went from house to house...I had had to stay home from school that day, and this little kid came to my house during the early afternoon because his mom had told him no one would be trick-or-treating later! I recall this like it were yesterday! Elizabeth Why ME??? |

I remember that too! The blizzard of '91, oh that was a great year for snow forts and tunnels, I remember tricker treating in my rubber boots... I remember it was on a weekend, and the snow was so horrible it took all weekend and Monday to clear it, snow day! Ahh, I love Minnesota... hehe Abrahm Simons "Keep on dreamin' boy 'cause when you stop dreaming it's time to die" - Blind Melon |

Well I'm right below you, and can relate to most of these. Don't think I've ever trick or treated through the snow though. Most of them are cold and rainy. And yep it's POP.....down south they call it sodie...go figure. LOL |
