Okay, I give up...just what is so funny about The Three Stooges? Is it a testosterone thing? Am I missing something? (besides the obvious, um, appendage?) Somebody please explain...preferably a WISE GUY... |

Wise guy, eh? Why I oughtta.... Wooo woo wooo!!!! Ahem... Well, although I must admit that I never saw the staggering humour that some have found in the Stooges, they do have their moments. The common denominator? Physical humour. Plain old slapstick comedy. They were the true masters of it. Ok, now why is it so funny to see a grown man poked in the eyes, hit in the head with a piece of lumber, or slip on a banana peel? For the same reason that most guys would laugh hysterically at their best friend falling off of a ladder while painting the eavestrough. For some reason, that is wildly funny to guys. Another man's misfortune holds a certain laugh factor. Of course, it can't be anything too serious. Death, financial devastation, serious injuries... none of these things are funny. Having a buddy hit his head hard enough to take the feet out from under him? Priceless. So, I guess I'm not really answering your question entirely. For the reason guys find physical humour funny, you would have to delve into psychology. The reason guys find the Stooges funny is because of the slapstick. We're a simple breed, really.  |

You know what serenity???I agree with you a 100%. When my uncle would babysit me thats all he would watch. I didnt find anything intresting about it and still to this day dont think its funny. I mean if you think that slapping each other around is enjoyable, I dont know what to tell you! |

Trew, Erin, and JP--I thank you for your replies, but curiously enough, while I was imitating the stupidity of the stooges, demonstrating the "old poke 'em in the eye" routine, using my boyfriend as the unsuspecting stooge, I accidently did indeed poke him in the eye! Now, needless to say, he was entirely unamused by the reality of slapstick, whereas I damned near died laughing. So yes, I am perplexed...and herewith, I shall leave all "eye-poking" to our resident expert, Irie... and JP, you can have jenny jones, rikki lake, et al.--but please, we need Oprah. If we could get her to promote the Voices book, manoman...gotta love her. |

JP~~~I prefer Maury. Jenny Jones is to many make~overs, same title everyday. Ricki Lake is ok but I dont care to watch it. And Oprah sometimes its good!!! Serenity~~~What do you mean by this: If we could get her to promote the Voices book??? |

Erin---Oprah has a book club--she recommends reading material to her audience, virtually guaranteeing a best-seller in the process... Grin--the woman has POWER---like I said, gotta love her. |

As a woman...here's my comedy delights... I love dry humor (ie British etc), I love Monty Python, The Princess Bride (hilarious! has the best one liners), I adore Abbot & Costello, I tolerate The Stooges, I adore the Addams Family. I love stupid commercials rather than the shows they fall between. I don't like talk shows of any kind, and given my choice, I would read and write and listen to music rather than watch the silly boob toob annnnnnnnnny day! But I am a sucker for romantic movies.....Shakespeare in Love, Ever After, Hope Floats, anything Jane Eyre.  *shrug* and that's me in a nutshell and a half |

I've got to agree with Trew that the Stooges are the purest form of physical comedy known to man. . . today's masters would have to include Jim Carrey and Robin Williams. . . women don't find the Stooges funny because they don't think that a blow to the head is funny. . . they see it as that the person being hit is being hurt. . . but to a guy. . . it's funny because it's not being done to him!!! LOL But, to agree with X-Angel, there's something to be said for Monty Python and that "cerebral" kind of British humor. . . makes you think and makes you laugh!! I'm not a big Stooges fan nor a Robin Williams fan. Matthew Perry is hilarious and so is David Spade, Mike Myers, Dana Carvey and the other Saturday Night Live cast from that time. Jim Carrey is okay - I liked him in Ace Ventura Pet detective - but the sequal was horrid. Dumb and Dumber and Cable guy were also stupid and neither one impressed me. My dislike over Robin Williams was over a period of time - I don't think he's funny anymore. Neither is the Seinfeld cast for that matter! Please note - These are just personal feelings about these particular stars. If anyone disagrees with me - well fine. My comments by no means are meant to insult anyone. |
