Briefly speaking, there was talk during the last two elections [that I know of] concerning the removal of the "Electoral College"...you know, that possibly antiquated system where the public gets to be told which way the states are going to vote prior to election time. This always told me, then "why bother going to the polls" except for the local elections. So what do you think? With media coverage and "instant communication" that our forefathers didn't have a clue was coming down the road, perhaps this would be a GOOD change for our government. It would certainly make me feel like my thought and subsequent vote had more weight. OK, anyone willing to put in their two cents? I can give change....< !signature--> Karilea If I whisper, will you listen?...KRJ [This message has been edited by Sunshine (edited 11-01-2000).] |

The large cities would be the only campign stops and candidates would never ever ever step foot in a small population state. The large cities, urban areas, could elect the president easier due to their population instead of having it more evenly split among state that don't have huge urban area. Eliminating the electoral college would do really nothing to eliminate the phenomenon of scientific polling and its subsequent effect on voter turnout. What would have a more significant effect would be delaying the release of official precinct talleys until all the polls are closed -- including those in Hawaii... but then we'd still be dealing with exit polling... A better way still to get people to the polls is to have decent, intelligent, inspriational leaders running for office. But this generation is running a little dry in that department so far. |

I think you refer to projections since by federal law, on the Monday following the second Wednesday of December each State's Electors meet in their respective State capitals and cast their electoral votes-one for president and one for vice president. The electoral votes are then sealed and transmitted from each State to the President of the Senate who, on the following January 6, opens and reads them before both houses of the Congress.
