AT ME!!!! Without going into too many particulars, let's just say that I am in need of "coping skills"--so I was wondering, what do YOU do to cope with stress? (and I am looking for the healthy alternatives, by the way...) And not just stress...I also have a vile temper when I feel trapped...any suggestions? |

Well shoot...what was the situation, or just any situation in general? [That's a toughy...I react differently to various stressors...] Karilea If I whisper, will you listen?... I would rather be silent and write, than speak loudly and be bound. KRJ |

If you really are mad as hell... some VIGOROUS exercise will help that stress...then take a nice, long, hot soak to relax....and/or write about what's stressing you. It doesn't have to be even readable; just the act of writing seperates you from it, so you are able to look at it in a different way. Hope I helped... Kris |

Hmmmmm, when I get Mad as hell I go somewhere so I can scream my lungs out..swear curse cuss the whole nine yards...as not to scare the hell out of anyone(I can sound very evil when I scream lol) someplace where no one can hear me. Usually the Big freezer at my work lol As far as stress..I find watching some silly ole TV program helps with that..you know mindless dribble TV or a could old fashion comedy...one that will make you laugh from deep down inside. If none of the above work...A plan old fashion sob sessions helps. -------------- You got to get up every morning with a smile on your face and show the world all the love in your heart Then people are gonna treat you better You're gonna find, yes you will That your beautiful as you feel.~~~ Carol King |

Hmm - hey, haven't we discussed this? Now what did I tell you...?? Good - cause I can't remember either. Now let me see. As I am keenly aquainted with both stress and sorrow I am sure I can help. You know I don't drink - so no unnatural aid from my corner...lol. a) Hot bath - with candles, bubblebath/oil whatever. This requires time though, and the opportunity to get away - and of course a bath. b) Walking...definitely walking. Anywhere - just away from home. c) Eating tonnes of chocolate - always worked for me - lol. d) But only if I am immersing myself in a book. And it has to be a book of detail - a book so richly described you forget the world you live in. Right - those are the escapist tactics. Now - time for the dealing with the emotions/situation tactics. a) Assess the situation. Is there any part of it you have control over? If so, what? How much? WRITE the situation down - and sort it out in orderly fashion. b) Same for emotions. We all have control over our emotions - though that sometimes seem impossible. List what you are feeling. Tick the ones you have control over - like how you can react to them. c) Steps for change. One of my favourite sayings is: 'The definition of idiotic is expecting something to change while doing the same thing over and over again.' Try new approaches to a physical situation... Onto emotional: a) Positive affirmations. They work. Seriously - I know. I used them. They helped me get out of an unsavoury relationship. Say ' I love my current happiness' or something like that - even if you are NOT feeling happy. Your brain - and even spirit - will hear you. b) STOP putting yourself down. c) Above all - be gentle to yourself. Remember - you are doing the very best that you can at the time. Well...that's my offering... hugs K - hope it helped. ![]() [This message has been edited by Severn (edited 12-04-2000).] |

Please follow these directions carefully: 1. Stand up. 2. Spread your arms out to the sides. 3. Flap your arms vigorously. 4. While flapping your arms, skip around the room. 5. While flapping your arms and skipping around the room, make a CAW CAW sound. 6. Don't you feel a bit foolish? LOL That's much better than the stress!! Note: for stubborn cases, while doing steps 1 - 5 above, go out and make some friendly droppings on your neighbors lawn ornaments! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

K? That definition of idiotic? SIGH...I looked it up, and that's my picture next to your words...(grin) thank you for the practical advice...though. love you much for that. Sharon? So that is how you stay so peaceful? ROFLMAO...since I am being practical, now...do you think for Christmas, we could arrange some "BAIL" MONEY? (The neighbors objected strenuously to the defacing of their lawn ornaments...) LOL... |

Well when i'm stressed over school......and let's say I get an F on a test.....i ask myself "will i care about this test score when i'm 30?...does this score make any life changing impact whatsoever?".......If the answer is no.....i fear not. Other kinds of stress i take my head and bang it on walls. Uhhhhh....i scream........yea that's about it hehe. ![]() I was born myself, raised myself, and will continue to be myself. I do wierd things when I get mad as hell. I start to try and convince myself that I am not human, because all humans are arseholes. OK, OK, I know they're not, I mean, I'm one of them and I'm usually a pretty decent fellow. But when I'm mad, that changes, lol. Or sometimes when I get mad while working with someone, I start cussing under my breath and thinking that the person I'm working with has no clue what he/she is doing. This usually results in me pissing them off by rolling my eyes, and sighing all the time, lol. Now, as for an appropriate solution: I like to write it down. I just turn on my computer and keep on tappin keys until I feel better, lol. Or I pray about it. Unfortunately, I'm seldom in the presence of mind to do that, though. |

Serenity~ I hear ya.......now the advice I give may freak some people out, but I really don't care,it works..........I live in the mountains, I'm a complete redneck kinda girl, so what works for me is to go shooting. It is fun, I get better at it and I can scream while I do it, and hey, my thoughts - are mine ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Sanity is the playground for the unimaginative. Go crazy and you don't have to bother with coping... besides, it's MUCH more fun. ![]() |

I used to go through the same thing... I understand completely. Exercise is good, but I found it hard to do when I was in a rage. It was a good preventative measure though...it helped me a lot to ease the stress levels in my life. But in the heat of the moment.... I always got on my dirt bike and rode like hell. Though, many will argue it's not that safe. True.... but I figured safer than driving my car like an Indy 500 racer. And it ALWAYS worked....I felt so much better and was able to cope. Then there were times by the time I got all my gear on, I was so tired, I couldn't be angry anymore. LOL A punching or speed bag is an EXCELLENT way to deliver anger and stress with out hurting a soul. Coping with stress...depends on what it stems from. Money issues, things that need to be done etc etc.... I've learned that stressing out does nothing but make you feel even worse. I FINALLY realized one day that "Hey, I'm doing all I can in this problem and there is nothing more I can do about it. Stress at work, family, and out of control child.... I've learned to walk away....take a break and try to rearrange my thoughts. Walking always helped. And the best of all.............. My masseuse! Get a massage once week if you can....or even once a month if that's all you can do. It really truly helps. Best of luck to you ....... Email me if you'd like..... I've dealt with all kinds of anger (sometimes violent) and stress. < !signature--> ~Sheri "The things that come to those that wait may be the things left by those who got there first" [This message has been edited by Irie (edited 12-08-2000).] |
