One of my all time favorite lines is from "Cold Comfort Farm" by Stella Gibbons. Ada Doom repeatedly says, "I saw something nasty in the woodshed." We never know what she saw; but that quote has become a an all-time favorite saying in my family. "I saw something nasty in the woodshed." ... Alison PS - The book is a great read |

Ha, that's awesome. I can't think of a favorite line right now, but there is one line that's been running through my mind lately, and I can't remember where it came from. Something about two characters in the book were talking about another character in the book who had died, and one says something along the lines of, "I wish everyone would stop saying she looks like she's sleeping. She's dead and she looks dead." Anyone else read it? And the woodshed line is awesome. Maybe I'll have to check into that book. |

Not sure, but I am thinking Robert Heinlein on Ron's quotes. A --- Okay, I had to cheat to find out for sure. Used to know someone who quoted him - I can't say I know this from reading his books. Had to Google to be sure - but after reading the quotes, I am tempted to give him a try. |

No single favorites, but contenders will come to mind on occasion. "Fog." The opening of Bleak House. "Forty million Frenchmen continued being Frenchmen as if there was nothing wrong with that." That's an approximation of a line from a Richard Condon novel. He's filled with gems, though few of them are polite. "Potatoes mattered." From a Richard Hugo poem. "What makes the vine around the elm to daunce With curious windings and embracements round? What makes the lodestone to the north advaunce Its subtle point as if from thence Its sole attractive virtue doth redound? Kind nature first doth cause all things to love, Love makes the Daunce, and in just order move." Poorly remembered, esp. line four, from Sir John Davies, "Orchestra, or a Poem of Dauncing." The poem is full of such heartbreaking (to me, at least) gems. The last two lines especially. If I remember others, I'll toss some in. |
