I'm teaching my daughter guitar (left hand YIKES!) -- and my son drums -- but that's another subject (this place has turned into a conservatory) I'm looking for great women guitarists to inspire my daughter with -- I have a few -- but in looking around I find the subject grossly neglected -- I'd be interested in who you'd put on the list. Thanks ![]() |

Serenity beat me to it. Charo is a fantastic guitar player, though even the term 'guitar player' fails to do her justice. She's more of a virtuoso. Then there's Joan Jett, and Bonnie Raitt. http://www.guitarsite.com/bands5.htm for a starting point. |

Thanks guys -- yeah -- I've seen that site too Cat.. what always tickles me is that I consider Stratocasters and Telecasters to be 'small' guitars -- but if you scroll down to the pictures of Deanna Carter (whom I LOVE!) and Meredith Brooks they look positively swamped by those guitars... Daisey Rock has done a great job of creating guitars for women... and the new Squier Hello Kitty guitar is getting a lot of attention... I hope to see a whole new generation of women in music... actually playing music -- not playing dumb blonde. |

I love Bonnie Raitt, got to see her live in Tallahassee years ago, went back stage with her for a few minutes to as my birthday present from some friends. She is hot.. And Charo? well, she MELTS those strings. Cool daddy you are, Reb, to teach your kids survival skills. |

You also have: Lita Ford (not great however really decent. Jennifer Batten (tours with Michael Jackson) The girls from Vixen Susan Tedeschi (sp) blues guitarist Poison Ivy (the Cramps) Ruyter Suys (Nashville Pussy) Nancy Wilson (Heart) Ani DeFranco Fanny (70's all-girl band) Also, not the best, however, successful: The Donnas Jewel Sheryl Crow The GoGo's The Breeders Liz Phair Chrissy Hynde Juliana Hatfield I could actually keep going, however you get a few from various genres and time periods.

This is probably before your time, but ever heard of Lady Bo? She was actually Peggy Jones, and was the lead guitarist for Bo Diddley? Man, could she play. Before her was Memphis Minnie ![]() |

though not all great technically, these ladies are fantastic pop/rock guitarists: Juliana Hatfield Melissa Auf Der Maur of Hole and The Smashing Pumpkins. She's fantastic, while predominantly a bassist has written for guitar as well Nina Gordon/Louis Post from Veruca Salt, great riffs Justine Frischmann and Donna Matthews of Elastica. Hook city Kristin Hersh of Throwing Muses had a distinct gritty sound Tanya Donelly founded the Throwing Muses, Breeders and Belly writes great pop hooks and has a really unique tuning Nina Ramsby, her group Salt was a one hit wonder but the album Auscaltate was one of the loudest/rawest albums to come out of the 90's outside of Nirvana and ladies from Drain S.T.H. forget their names |

If you're feeling adventurous, try Kaki King.....she's a virtuoso, but oh what an unusual style! ~~(¸¸¸¸ºº> ~~(¸¸¸¸ºº> ~~(¸¸ ¸¸ºº> ~~~(¸¸ER¸¸ºº> |

Although she's already been mentioned, I strongly suggest Ani DiFranco. I know squat about guitars... tried a couple times to learn, and it's just too much for me to coordinate one motion with one hand, and another motion with the other. (incidentally, I suck on the piano, as well... whoda thunk? Just give me my nice, simple clarinet, please... ![]() But... aaaaanyway, even my untrained ear can pick up the intricacies of her playing. A friend of mine, a guitar player himself, is immensely impressed by her, and believe me, he's not the type to go for angry-political-feminist folk rock. Album suggestions: Her first self-named album- just her and an acoustic guitar. 'Living in Clip'- a two-disc live set (incidentally, two of my most-played CD's) that really showcases all of her different stylistic abilities. 'Evolve'- the best (in my opinion) of her later cd's, especially for showcasing guitar work. Hope this helped. ![]() |
