You may have noticed that in record stores, a new style of career-spanning compilations known as The Essentials, which include the greatest hits from each artist, as well as fan favorites and bonuses. The Essential Eric Clapton. The Essential Jefferson Airplane. The Essential Clash.

Imagine if you stopped writing poetry today, and you went back to reflect on your work to date as if you wanted to publish your most 'essential" work.

Let's go with your top 30 poems. What would you want your "Essentials" collection to look like?

Feel free to share your own sort of listing here!

Sincerely,
Noah Eaton

This is so weird.  Just today I started a little project where I am going back over ALL of my poetry and taking parts of each poem and making one LARGE poem.  Now, that sounds silly to some, but I thought it would be interesting to see how different times in my life would look all blended together.  As far as my 30 Greatest Hits - The Essentials go, well...

I actually only think that I have 23 that I would want to be remembered by lol, and here they be - Not listed in any order other than random.

1. Shoeboxes
2. Of Fire and Light (duet with Littlewing)
3. Private Ballare - The Dance of Lovers
4. Letting Go
5. THe Rock and The Willow
6. In Between
7. The Legend of Timothy Wayne
8. Bars of Flesh
9. October Morning
10. Three In The Afternoon
11. Pleasure In Things That Have Passed
12. Standing Guard
13. On The Banks of Old Tackachee
14. The Tables Turned
15. THe Voice That Said Goodbye
16. Drumline
17. Opposite Sides of the Water
18. Within These Walls
19. Of Writing and Painting
20. Los Acabar
21. The Swing
22. House Made of Stone
23. With This Ring

Aenimal is very correct about self-critics, which is why I really can't provide a list.  There's less than 10 of the 3000-someodd that I like, even fewer I love of all I've written.  Now, if it was other people creating the Essential list for a particular poet, that'd be a bit different.

Even tho we are our own worst critics, I do speak for myself (and probably plenty others) when I say that most of the time, SOMETHING in our life makes us write.  Like for example... when my parents divorced, that me write.  When my own marriage fell apart, I wrote.  When I chopped off my own wings and tried to self destruct - I wrote once again.  When I found myself and put ME back together, I wrote yet again.  When life finally got sweet, and I realized it - I wrote.  There were, and still are alot of times that no matter how hard I try, I can never get anything on paper that sounds like it makes sense, however there are times that emotions ran either too high or too low and there wasn't enough paper in the free world to satisfy the itch that my muse and pen had.

The poetry that came forth during these moments are the ones that are my Essentials so to say because - it was then that I learned a lesson, or reflected long enough to remember what I swore I would never forget.

My daddy always said "Don't ever forget where ya come from gal."

And so, on occasion I give the bones a visit if for nothing but a reminder of how far it is in which I have come.

I may hate myself in the morning - but I'm gonna love you tonight

I'm with Alicat i'd like to see a thread listing other people's works, there's alot of poems hidden in the archives that people should see. Ive always thought PIP should have a monthly, or even weekly spotlight on archive poems from poets past and present.

Alright I went back and found five that I can sorta stand, I think. The problem is a successful poem, to me, is one that accomplishes its goal of getting something out of my head, no matter how it turns out. That and the fact that I'm a lousy writer lol

1. Is there some way...
2. of friendship. (I'll hold you)
3. you reminded them of funerals
4. cliche (falling into raindrops)
5. You Never Really Cared

The archive spotlight thing sounds like a great idea!

He was a man of sorrows
...I am a girl of tears.
