Just wondering - most people here don't use their actual name.

For those who want to share the story - how/why did you pick your pip name? Or what does it mean?

This one is super easy.  My chosen name, since I can do that because of multiple middles, is Alastair.  Friends in college thought that sounded a bit too pompous and formal, and they promptly shortened it to Ali.  Alicat was not far behind.  And I know how popular that name is, so I'm very glad I snagged it when I did those many years ago here.

I'm really starting to hate my username.

I had another one, but back in my rebellious teenager days I made a new one as a joke to see if I could write offensive poetry in the Teen forum, but still be popular by using enough smileys in my comments and acting friendly.  I wanted to convey "generally accepted nuisance" with my username.

I wish I could change it, because it's a terrible username and it doesn't really make sense anymore.  Would love to change it to something more along the lines of "Brian James," but our name change days have come and gone, and I don't see any happening in the near future.

Good question.  I'll be reading this thread some more.

when i first came online i'd been reading alot of carl jung, who'd introduced the terms aenimus and aenima in terms of psychology. i'd also been exploring occult, religious and alchemical texts and discovered the same words in terms of spirituality. finally, i came across a cd titled ÆNIMA by a little band called Tool. I was never really into the band but based on the title, intrigued by the coincidence, i bought it. it all helped me through a rough time, and for awhile i fancied the notion that to find inner peace was to perfectly combine both aspects into one, becoming a balanced human or better than human (something i jokingly referred to as an Ænimal)

ahem...there you have it, boring, strange, slightly psychotic perhaps but you asked.

a simplified version then? i like tool, as a drummer i always admired animal from the muppets

how bout you copperbell?

Mine is way easy . . .

(btw Raph, that was nice up there)

I am a Hendrix freak.

(no, really Sue, are you?)

and have always loved angels and wings, flight, birds . . . and the very first time I ever heard that first chord to "Littlewing" . . . I fell in love . . .

I have always adored the guitar and after doing reading on some of Hendrix's songwriting, I found out that littlewing is a tribute to his muse . . . so I thought that was very cool seeing as I got into writing poetry anyhow . . . but I didn't know this until much later . . . I just loved the words to that tune ever since I was about 13 or so.

Plus it fits me . . . I don't know why - I guess because I am always attempting flight . . .

"The story of life is quicker than the wink of an eye . . . the story of love is hello and goodbye.  Until we meet again."   - James Marshall Hendrix

Sue? You're a HENDRIX fan??? Please say it isn't so!!!!!    lol
It's really interesting to hear these stories about your names...

Kaoru... I have thought about it and came up with... NOTHING... except a few really stupid ideas that I know are completely wrong. How about a hint???

As for me... In a former life, I was a working musician and for various reasons, needed to go to using a stage name... Even though I play bass, my friends were calling me Ringo because I was in a band and it stuck.

They took pictures of our dreams
Ran to hide behind the stairs
And said maybe when it's right for you, they'll fall

I carried the nick of "Sunshine" along with a few others over time, but this one came from my father, and of course, the old song that he use to sing to me. Decades ago when CB handles were common - Sunshine was my name.

It seemed to carry itself through to PiP as well.

Interesting responses -

if I were to have guessed your stories - there were only a couple that I would have come close. Martie, Nan I had yours pegged

And Christopher I never would have guessed yours
Alicat - so that means you don't hang around on the streets then?
Aenimal - I thought yours was a play on animal
Kaoru - I actually thought that was your name
Local Parasite - I love your story -
Littlewing - never would've guessed
Ringo - makes perfect sense - and Michelle
Sunshine - it so suits you
Trillium - reminded me of science fiction - I don't know much about flowers I guess
Serenity - makes sense - I love your pip name by the way
Timothysangel - definately an easy one to guess
Local Rebel - I don't get the local part - does that mean you're not a rebel if you're away from home?
Gentle Spirit - funny how that happens -

I guess I could tell mine - I was writing a story that had a copper bell in it and I liked the sound of it.  What I'd like better though is to finish the story  *sigh

I'm curious about a few of our members that didn't reply still

Aenimal - I also thought your story was interesting.  The word just seemed to me like a play on animal but there is a heck ovalot more to the word than that.

Wellll......

Back in the mists of time, two things happened in a way that feels almost simultaneous but wasn't....

First, an internet capable computer came into my home, via a son's graduation gift.....a Pentium 100 speed merchant, with a monster 1-gig hard drive....how would he ever fill such a huge drive???

Also first, there was a guy named Pat, a poet who saw poet in me even though I hadn't written in two decades, and asked to see my as-yet-nonexistent stuff.....

Talking to Pat shortly after the computer thing, I mentioned that I was going to sign up for an email service in case I ever wanted to send a message to someone from the computer -- all free, amazing what they do these days.....

In the same conversation he'd kidded me about my name....Ratledge had become "Rat Liege, the lord and leader of all rats......"

That night when I came to that dreaded blank on the application screen, there was only one thing I could be....Ratleader!

Most folks who try, assume it's a reference to the Pied Piper, which I don't mind at all....but it was my Pied Pat who did it.

I was otherwise known in other forums as little bird and just wanted a change.

I bought my share of mistakes so I might see some interest.

I think I've told this story before but here goes:

When I got my computer, I wanted an identity other than my ‘real’ life identity. I think I wanted to hide behind the anonymity of a name that would be recognized as someone I never thought I could be.

I sat at my dining room table with poetry books, a thesaurus, a dictionary and paper and pencil. I knew I wanted an identity that would exemplify my body of work. I love ivy…the way it looks against a brick wall. I thought about each of my poems as a leaf of ivy on that vine. "Leaves of Inspiration" was my first choice, but couldn’t fit a suitable ‘name’ in there. I read about vines..about ivy...about branches...until I realized that I could do a play on words.

The Vine....deVine...everyone mistakes it for divine (heavenly)..but actually it is the vine. Poet seemed the perfect first name...Poet of the Vine.

Besides, it’s not bad to be called Poet. I hope I am one. (Not so much lately as the muse has flown from me it seems! Guess it's two years of stress and worry about moving and then arriving at my new home only to weather two hurricanes! And now we are awaiting the arrival of twin grandsons!!)

When I am sad or thinking I always look to the clouds looking for answers (that probably sounds odd). I remember when I was really little, I used to tell my mom that my grandfather was sitting on one of them puffy clouds staring at me.

With all that was going on in my life. I should of named it Grey Cloud 9. I guess I had my "head in the clouds" to what was happening with my husband.

Well...one day I was listening to a CD by Chanticleer (they do Gregorian Chants) while researching some Einstein quotes actually.  Strangely enough, the title of the CD was Mysteria   and the quote I was reading at the time was this one,

"The most beautiful and deepest experience a man can have is the sense of the mysterious. It is the underlying principle of religion as well as of all serious endeavor in art and science. He who never had this experience seems to me, if not dead, then at least blind.

—Albert Einstein

I figured I was indeed one of the hardest persons to get to understand, and as I was always seeking answers to something or other, I figued it suited me.  I am strangely interested in all things unexplained, and seek out the explanations.     So, I dropped the name I had picked before and became, Mysteria.

Mysteria - that's a cool story

Beenie - I haven't seen you around yet - welcome - you've got a cute name

What strikes me is how much meaning people have and I don't - I just liked the sound of the word I should think up some meaning for it...

It's really interesting, really.

You're right about Christmas being the real catalyst. But that's just one piece of the story!

I've always been a hippy spirit pretty much, and though I didn't start writing poetry seriously until February of 2000 when my sophomore English teacher Philippe Ernewein inspired me to, I always had a lust for writing and letting my imagination run wild since I was Mistletoe Cherub, and I've always been fascinated by the free-spirit ideals.

I really reflected my love of nature in my diary when I was eleven, when I went to Nederland on a warm July day and met a writer from olympia, Washington named Rainbow Dancer (his name has become a spiritual character of mine in many of my poems). He goes across the country writing books about bird songs and taking pictures of people wearing peace shirts and making photo album after album of collections of these peace-shirt wearing folks. So he saw me wearing a peace shirt (I guess I've always had the peacenik activist blood in me from the beginning, LOL, giggles), took a picture, then I talked with him for a bit, told me what he did, asked of my inspirations and then told me to not just love the flowers of the Earth, but be among them. I guess those words literally stuck with me all this time!

The first poetry forum I ever posted on after Mr. Ernewein encouraged me to become a prolific, serious poet at the turn of the century was called Papa's Poetry Circle. I kind of coined my own proverb prior to that April 2000: "Dream With The Daffofils" inspired by Rainbow Dancer. I was listening to a lot of Jefferson Airplane and Grateful Dead at the time, and I guess song titles like "China Cat Sunflower" and "Sugar Magnolia" just got my imagination and imagery running wild, because I have an extreme love of flowers, and I adopted the pen-name Daffodil Angel and it just stuck on from then.

It was a poet named Mutington who became a close friend of mine and encouraged me to post on her new site Mutington's meadow. So I did, and then from there, she promoted the link to Passions In Poetry with Startime and before Christmas in 2000, I decided to join here, yay!

After Thanksgiving, I thought it would be cool to temporarily change my name to get in the holiday spirit, so I just went with Mistletoe Angel. Because I joined here just before Christmas, I used Mistletoe Angel and at the time I thought you weren't stuck with the same pen-name your whole life here, LOL! So really my name was intended to usually be Daffodil Angel here.

But that's absolutely OK, because I consider the Mistletoe Angel name a very happy accident as Bob Ross liked to call it when he made little bloopers doing paintings but just let them be.

I've thought more and more these past four and a half years and I find my name is very philosophically sound too. In that I believe the spirit of Christmas, giving and sharing and caring for the less fortunate, ought to fill our hearts and minds 365 days a year in one way or another, and I'm just trying to give and share my heart in that manner as much as I can year-round.

Also, mistletoe has many mixed meanings and perceptions across the world. Some glorify it as a sweet, seductive entity, which makes lovers kiss during the holidays and such, but other cultures see it negatively as a parasite that kills oak trees. So I guess I'm just a lot of things, and my name is like a walking contradiction, and I guess I'll just let God and everyone else decide who I am!

Mistletoe Angel has really leaked into my regular social identity as well. I use it as a nick-name when I sign greeting cards, petitions, at KBOO radio, etc.

So my name is essentially just that; a happy hippy accident! (giggles)

Yay, I love this thread and love learning of everyone else's origins, yay!

Love,
Noah Eaton

Amazon Link

I searched for it on amazon, and this is what I got. The OVA releases are the best animation style wise and storyline wise. There is also a movie. I would suggest looking for the individual episodes elsewhere considering there are over 100 of them.

Noah- Just read your story, and think it is actually really cool.
I also think it's amazing (although, giving it more thought, not suprising) that you brought out the name of the sainted Bob Ross. I still glimps his "happy accidents" on PBS on occasion, and I am glad that you (or better your name) is one such happy accident.

This is actually my second Passions ID ... first one was copied almost exactly by another poster when I took an extended hiatus, so since I wasn't terribly attached to the monniker I decided to choose something a little more ... erm, suited to my personality.

In a nutshell, some of the most monumental changes in my adult life have resulted from some whim or another of mine, usually to the shock (and sometimes the dismay) of family and friends.

You never know what I'm gonna do next.

(giggles) Yep, but I am absolutely blessed by the wonderful happy accident of my name, and now wouldn't want it any other way now looking back. (smiles) It's not to say there are others here who are not happy with their accidental name choices, but I love how mine turned out!

Yay! Oh Ringo, I loooovveee watching the syndicated episodes of "Joy of Painting" with Bob Ross all the time! I just admire him so much not only for his artistic talent, but his own artistic personality and love of life. He is just so calm and peaceful in everything he says and does (that's also why I'm a great Jack Johnson fan, whatever he sings about, even in serious themes, his voice is so calm and peaceful.) (smiles) His comforting spirit casts smiles on every tree on every mountain I bet! (does happy dance)

Temple of the Dog? Indeed! The combination of Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and of course, Mother Love Bone is awesome.

My favorite tracks are Wooden Jesus, Four Wall World, Times of Trouble, Call Me a Dog... oh what the hell, just about all of them.

You like TotD too? If so, cool!

I lived in Puerto Rico and decided to visit a friend of mine in Washington State. So, when i got there everyone used the word 'dope' to mean COOL.
So when i went back to PR i kept saying how "dope" i was (i was pretty cocky back then) and everyone's reply to that would be "you're just dopey"

hence- dopey dope

Well, This is embarrissing....  It was my nick name when I was a sophmore in highscool. It all started by that one guy some of you know all to well that broke my heart and never let go of me until the last day he realized I would see him... graduation.  My family still calls me Juju and that is my actual poet name.  Most of all the poetry I have ever written since the 10th had that name.

My other Nic names have been
Jewl, julz, Julia
Now every one calls me Jewl (Jul),  I think I have out grown Juju at home, but it is my poet name.

Juju - 1.) a magic charm or fetish 2.)Magic 3.)A taboo connected woth the use of magic

The dictionary never lies.... I am magical (;

My name was derived from my college radio name that a couple of my fellow DJ's and dear friends gave me which was Blue Velvet.  Most people just called me Blue.  And I had been studying french since I was in junior high and love the way blue is spelled in french.  And Just is short for my boyfriend's name Justin. It ended up being Justbleu.  Accidently on purpose I guess.
