This is a topic that I found curious (especially after hearing Pat Boone's rendition of Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train") and just now, since my pc is like, totally screwed up, I was just reminded of it again, as on my Real Player index, it showed, um, "Cross-Eyed Mary" (from Jethro Tull) with Joni Mitchell as the featured artist. I thought, "Now how interesting would that be?" Maybe not very, but I thought it might be amusing to see which artists you all would like to see record which classic song? Consider "Cross-Eyed Mary" as interpreted by Joni Mitchell as a start. (And Raph? I am expecting some interesting choices from you sir.  ) |

Speaking of the Wall Layne Staley and Tom Morello released a pretty cool cover awhile back.. okay i'd like to hear: Bob Dylan cover 'Sweet Virginia' by the Rolling Stones Coldplay cover 'Wish You Were Here' by Pink Floyd(though Catherine Wheel did a great job a few years back) Massive Attack(w/Breathy female vocals) cover 'When The Levee Breaks' by Led Zeppelin Radiohead cover 'Space Oddity'(Major Tom) by David Bowie Tool(w/Tori Amos) cover 'Gimme Shelter' by The Rolling Stones B.B. This is one of my Views, but I really dislike cover songs, as the performers get money from someone else's material and idea. Some times, the performer does a really really good job, with the cover sounding better than the original. I did have to shake my head in shame at the younger generation when 'Last Kiss' by J. Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers was covered by Pearl Jam, and all the younguns thought Pearl Jam wrote the song.  And some covers only use the music, yanno, like 'Ghetto Superstar' which sounded amazingly like 'Islands in the Stream'. Not to mention Vanilla Ice changing one note and claiming the score for 'Under Pressure' by Queen as his own creation. |

Too be fair though, I did like a lot of the covers for 'I Am Sam' using Beatles songs. There was no way they could use the actual Beatles' songs, since the cost for rights would have broke the budget for the movie by many millions. And Aenimal, you would love my dad's collection. He has a section in his library which is 5' x 10', filled with 33 1/3's. Everything from Classical to German Beer Songs. You won't much anything after 1954 though....that dude totatly abhors Rock, considers cross-over artists as traitors, and abstaining from even 1950's era Rockabilly. |

wow, i'd love a setup like that, i l#ve the convenience and quality of compact discs, but there's a warmth and character people are missing out on. Not to mention you were getting more for your money with lyric sheets and artwork. |

Laughing nice and I knew, Raph, just KNEW, you'd have a list. and this one from your list I find the most intriguing, and prolly the best bet: No Doubt cover 'D'yer Maker' by Led Zeppelin so far 'cause I know you'll be back! And yeppers to all three of my brothers, we are still collecting vinyls here too, and we literally can't count them all. (and I'd like to hear Joss Stone sing "Boogie With Stu") |

and another thing... *still laughing* gotta argue with my bro, Ali (it's tradition) there was this guy who used to drive a bus here in my neighborhood. He'd cut a song way back whenever, and it was covered in England, as the stray cats and "shiffle" music hit the regeneration thing that happens with all music. Not only did he get a nice fat check? But he had a career waiting for him in Europe. (Sometimes that copyright thang WORKS. ) His first name was Joe. smile (As brain fuzz would have it, I can't recall his last name--but hell, we all called him Mr. Joe anyhow.) |

Gotta love Big Momma Thorton as she belts out them blues.  There is one cover artist I really have come to like, who does a lot of big band and rat pack tunes, though he started as a white rapper (one of the obscene trashy kind): Robbie Williams. Now, that dude sure can croon. |

K it was a tossup between Costello or The Cars, but i figured the latter too obvious since, if im not mistaken, Ric(the ugly guys hero..paulina porizkova for god's sake) Ocasek produced their debut album Hey how about Wille Dixon? Where would Zeppelin and Jimmy Page have done without Willie Dixon or Robert Johnson? ..i mean besides battle on/offstage boogers according to K's experience lol |

I think I'd mentioned that I discovered my favorite radio station one night when I'd happened upon a program wherein they took the classics, and traced the roots, and played the original, as well as the covers that later became hits. I keep bugging the dj's for a repeat, but since WWOZ is an all volunteer dj program, and most of these folks bring their own vinyls in, I don't know that it will be repeated. I couldn't even record it at the time, because well, that was in my welfare days, and the only "stereo" I had was a transistor radio, which kept picking up interference from my neighbor's baby monitor. *laughing* (I had turned mine off--and lest someone frowns on THAT, for pete's sake, it was a two bedroom shotgun house, who needed a baby monitor?) But man, I'll have to get together a list now. So many, so many... And now that I mention it to, IFC has been running this great special too. I'll get back to you on the name. Brain fuzz yanno.  Ya'll are fun to talk to, and this is why it takes me three hours to get out of the local music store. |

K theres a great program called the 'ongoing history of new music' hosted by alan cross of the edge in toronto. it's broadcast by alot of international alt stations so you may have heard it. he's done some great covers shows where like you mentioned, they play original and covers back to back. one of his better shows focused on sampling or copyright infringments. it included or mentioned elastica's outright robbery of wire, Verve/Rolling Stone fiasco of Bittersweet Symphony and even Kurt Cobain's playful take on Boston's More than a Feeling riff(Smells like teen spirit..listen to it) to name a few. if yer interested here's the site http://www.edge.ca/ongoing_history/sp_ongoing_history.cfm you can listen to the new shows or read the archives if you scroll down. good call christopher, i'd like to hear that. ah drug induced paranoia, always makes for great music |

oh - and of the half-dozen covers I've heard that I've actually liked (I'm kinda with Ali on this one; rarely are the covers even close to as good as the originals, much less better) - The Ataris covering "Boys of Summer" by Don Henley - especially liked the swap from "Dead-Head" to "Black Flag" sticker on that 'ol Caddy. |

I dont mind Van Hagar, but their work with Roth is just soooooooo much better How about Bon Scott for ac/dc? While is replacement is better known(argh forgot his name) I've always liked Bon better. |

and btw? As for moi doing a cover song, if I haven't told you the story before, I'll have to relate the one about the time I sang "Oughtta Know" by Alanis Morrisette at a backyard barbecue. My husband was angry at me for a week and I didn't even notice. (It had something to do with a long neck beer bottle and some gestures I made during the moaning part of that particular song. )and *chuckle* yeah, C, PdV? I know I told you two the story. giggling |

i vaguely remember it... so hard to siphon through. other cover songs i like (just because I've been thinking about it): War Pigs - originally by Sabbath, as covered by Faith no More Mercyful Fate - originally by Mercyful Fate, as done by Metallica Desperado - originally by The Eagles, as done by Clint Black (i know, just humor me). Ones I don't understand at all: Word Up - originally done by somebody, as covered by Korn - absolute ick - it sucked in the first place, why relive it? Shameless - originally by Billy Joel, as covered by, uhm, whatever, Garth Brooks. What irritates me on this is that Garthy made it such a huge hit, when not only was it not original, his singing style doesn't even compare with Billy's. *sad* |

Really Chris? I happen to love the Word Up cover (btw, it was originally done by some guy named Cameo). It's something I would never think of as working, but when I heard it, I really liked it. And, um, David Lee Roth makes me a little sick to my stomach. I much prefer Van Hagar. |

Dave, Dave, Dave... charm? No. Creepy, yeah. But as you say, that's his way. truthfully, since i've been inundated with Word Up lately, it's started to grow on me. just received A Perfect Circle - Emotive as a gift and found several of the songs are cover songs... if not all. I only recognized a few as such, but enough to suggest they all might be. Imagine, originally by John Lennon was not too bad. People are People (no clue who did that first) is just wierd and may take some time to either love or hate... http://egowhores.com - really love yourself. |

i cannot get into word up lol have never liked the song. have you heard Korn's version of One by Metallica? Now that's a pretty perfect cover. Speaking of emotive, i caught the video for imagine the other day, creepy. and speaking of imagine, grabbed Lennon's new cd acoustic, its pretty interesting a little bit live, a little bit demo. |

JohsG, they covered it for MTV's Metallica Tribute..i think it was a series called Icons. They may have included it with their last album as a hidden or bonus track, not sure as I never picked that one up. It's amazing Brian Johnson i knew it was a Johnson or Johnston. As for Madonna, she shouldn't be allowed to cover anything after the slaughter of American Pie |

heh - Madonna on anything... no thanks. Spent a little more time with Perfect Circle's "Emotive" and still don't know whether I like it or not (did the same thing with Lateralus, which I ended up really liking, though I don't know if this holds the same promise). I think all the songs are covers on this album... though i'm using the term cover quite liberally. Freedom of Choice - originally by Devo - isn't too bad, though I think Psychotica did a much better job on that one than even the original. I still haven't been able to determine if "When the Levee Breaks" is supposed to be a cover of Zep or some random trip... weird stuffs man. |

did the same with lateralus, i was pretty disappointed at first, after a couple of listens though, wow speaking of tool and zeppelin covers, they did a great version of no quarter, leaked onto the net years ago but was finally made an official release on the salival dvd/cd. still have to get that one quiet riot, i loved that first album cover. |

Oh man, I am the cover Queen, I love covers, as long as they are good covers and have heard some strange stuff but the strangest one is this bluegrass band doing "Gin and Juice" before Snoop. I swear to God, Ed has it. Ya guys gotta get it. "When the Levee Breaks" would be lovely and Sheryl Crow singing anything will make me yak. Tool's "No Quarter" is awesome. I don't have a list, that will take me at least an hour to do. I will be back, nice thread, K. I need to get me a new turntable, too. Raph is the king of tunes, I will admit. I love Joni, but mann not doing that. *shivers* I actually like Cash's "Hurt" |
