in their powers, no. in the possibility, not sure. part of me believes in the fantastic and the other believes in a Jung essay that stated ghosts/dead are physical manifestations of subconscious thought. |

I don't believe, either. I'm just not convinced they are deliberate frauds. Do you think this sort of thing harmful? |

no more so than the billions of other lies we soothe ourselves with, e.g. religion, politics, l..lo...romance. |

sigh... well, pull up a stool, Raph. Seems we're the only ones here... This is a question that is of some importance to me, because, as you know, I have done some, um, dabbling? In fact, I have done "readings" involving palmistry, tarot, etc. I confess I've had some success at this...but I watch these shows, and I see the deliberate "fishing" going on--which is something I have never employed. In fact, if you would call it "success", the most startling instances of my own experience have been when I do not know the querant personally, and have no previous knowledge. And--as you know, I am also a student of Jung--so here I am--tsk--the befuddled witch. There are things I have done myself which I can't explain. So like you, I believe there is some sort of "phenomena" there. I'm just not sure what it is, or even if it's a positive thing. |

well you know i'm in the same place, the rational mind battling with the spiritual mind. hermeticism is the closest i've some to finding a balance between the two. that said, it's entirely possible that it wasn't simply a subconscious manifestation, but actual contact with something. whether the something was the intended person(s) or someone(or worse something) else is the new question. |

Exactly. Not the "new" question though--the most ancient and most troubling... but I am reminded too, of my brother, who was also a kabbalah student, that he battled his scientific mind against what he, himself, confessed could be self-induced hallucinations. ("Is Religion a "virus" of the mind?") The problem becomes tho--as I discovered--that if you take the scientific approach with validation (I actually wrote some readings by hand and sealed them) the result still would--and did--belie even self-doubt. * * * My own mother is quite the pragmatist. And yet, in her social circles, she had an experience that she seldom talks of to this day. My neighbor was killed in an offshore explosion in 1968. The widow's best friend and cousin was vacationing in the Bahamas at the time and communication was at best, "iffy". My mother, after an emotional day of comforting the bereaved, 'saw' her, in a carousel-type restaurant, a high-rise with an incredible view and later she said she almost vomited, thinking, "Come home"--it was that intense. and yep, the woman called and did indeed cut short her vacation. and yes, you guess it, she later described the situation, and how she suddenly became ill during dinner, in that state-of- the-art revolving restaurant, when she had this urge to phone home. * * * I know, I know, most folks believe their mother is a remote-viewer. But dammit, I do believe mine IS!!! |

no not 'new' i know, just meant to the conversation, it's exactly why i've never dabbled. i think there's a cosmic 'kick me' sign on my back so why offer myself as a target. ahem.. anyhow. my problem with 'respectable' scientist's is their derision of 'paranormal' study, forgetting that much of the 'facts' we now take for granted were once considered paranormal or magical. physicists seriously argue the possibility of bending time and space. is that any less fantastic then esp or clairvoyance? so let's mesh the fantastic with the scientific. we all know that time is relative. in our minds a minute to one may seem an hour to another. we're able to recall past events so vividly, that we can sometimes lose ourselves within as if they were physical reality. why then, is it impossible to believe that a thought, powerful and focused enough, could bend time/space or enter other dimensions(not 'alien word dimensions' i mean perceptive) allowing one to foresee? We don't yet know the limitations of the human mind nor is it proven that we've finished evolving. if our 'reality' or 'physical' world is simply a matter of perception, the organization of sensory data, what's to say 'clairvoyants' haven't simply developed or tapped into another sense? (sorry for the delayed response had to take care of something, and now i'm off to bed..nite m'friend ) |

I believe in the possibility. Like above, not only my mother, but I too have had times of "instant need" to reach out and touch someone. And those times have been both enlightening, and sad. What I don't believe in is that something like this should be "sold". I'll get back to this thread. I've a lot on my plate just now... |

I don't believe in the television bunk that is forced upon us and/or studio audience either. But, I do believe that there are some of us who are not afraid to use all of our powerful senses. I think that we can reach powers(is that the word I want?)belonging to us, if we could just let go of fear. It is safer to live a day to day existance with 5 senses set at "regular" rather then "heightened cycle." I mean .... have you ever even just asked someone "Do you smell smoke?" because you do? They answer no, looking at you like you are from Mars, and three minutes later the fire trucks are heard off in the distance? The embarrassment from the stares before the sirens and after are enough for you to not speak up again. We have not tapped in to what belongs to us without it becoming as my father would have said, "A Big Production." Just my five cents. Hugs, Chrislane |

I would love to believe, and honestly sometimes I wish I were dumber so I could just be happier, but they have to (at least) give me a show that's a little less obvious. A couple of quotes for thought: "Aren't you a bit surprised that the only message that the dead seem to be able to give to us is someone had a nickname Miss Piggy? And they can only tell us that, you know, I had a heart condition?....I want to hear just one of the psychics today tell me when is there going to be the next bus bombing in Tel Aviv so we can avoid going on that bus." --Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, on "Larry King Live," March 6, 2001 "Death is a part of life, and pretending that the dead are gathering in a television studio in New York to talk twaddle with a former ballroom-dance instructor is an insult to the intelligence and humanity of the living." --Michael Shermer sigh. y'gotta admit, they have a point. But then if 500 bucks and a suspension of disbelief allows someone to resolve some conflicting emotions, who am I to judge? shrugs and peace. |

James Van Praag??? Absolutely NOT!!!! I saw him debunked one night on TV.... Joh Edward??? I'm not sure. He give a great deal of generic information, however, he also seems to have hits on specifics. The subject??? Absolutely. I firmly believe that there are people who can communicate with the "Other Side", and that they are accurate to the most part. I am just very leery about accepting anyone at face value. Whenever I feel blue, I start breathing again... |

You know the military has remote viewer programs to help search for downed or lost equipment. Police departments have also sought help in certain cases so there must be something to it. |

oh I do know...there was this great special on the History channel regarding those sort of programs employed by the Soviet Union, and the "hush-hush" operations of the United States which mimicked theirs... wish I had a better memory. laughing REMOTE viewing? it's all I can do to ascertain the here and now. *snort* |

Hi..I have often pondered if I believe them or not. I think they may have some bit of ability to hear or contact spirits, but most of what they do in public is hyped, it has to be. That said, sure wish I could talk to some loved ones on the other side.. Sandra |
