Since i've joined i haven't touched pen or paper I've found my best work has been spur of the moment writing and immediate posting. Anything I post was written at that moment or an hour or two before(for tweaking) Sure its made for some crappy poems but Ijust feed off the excitement and emotion of the moment. I wonder how others write. Do you write on paper, do you write days or weeks before posting? What are your sources of inspiration? Special techinques? Magic? etc..any information will be interesting to read and hopefully this will be an insight into the writers themselves and also source inspiration or new techniques for everybody involved. |

same as that. always have done. Just let it flow, juggle it around maybe. then take another look in 20 mins or so. a few changes. and then release it to the wild. Of course sometimes it comes back weeks later and looks a real mess. But sometimes they seem to thrive. You have to trust them. |

I have to go with that, Raph. Once I gotthe back log on here (which took very few post) I usually just sit here at the computer and go. Whatever gets put down is what wanted to be written. I do usually do minor editing on the fly, but nothing to change the meaning, or feel of the write. Ooops... I did have one (my first to be voted into Reflections) that I started writing on the drive home from rehearsal late one night. Although I didn't have the entire thing finished, I had the final line, and the general idea complete before I got home, and finished it up as soon as I got on the site. I find it all depends on my mood and the weather....oh, and what music I might be listening to at the time a word or two strikes me. But, yes, I write it down on paper first. Then I read it aloud to myself...or whoever will listen to my ramblings. Sometimes it just comes to me, but I like pen and paper... to me it's just more reassuring, and it's usually easier to write. I carry my writing books with me everywhere... lol... Sometimes I just have a phrase rolling around in my head, and it finally manages to escape... Occasionally - very rarely - I just sit down and make myself write. Sometimes those turn out well. Sometimes they don't. I guess most of the time though, I can tell when I'm ready to write by my mood... I just have a little sensor or something. *shrug* Maybe I'm just weird. lolKielo It's so good to be home... :) |

I dont use paper anymore.I tend to write from one line.One line will come to me, and I may sit on it a while.But once I start writing I have to finish it.Most times if I stop the write, it just never gets finished. As to how I write? when writing metric...I just count fingers,lol.Free verse?I am still learning, most of my bad writes are free verse.I will simply dump whatever I am doing or feeling right into the forums.You all get my life in a fast drunk write straight into open.I fight hard to come out of my comfort zone with my writes, but they seem to keep a narrow bandwidth.So I read the rest of you and try to learn. By the way...have learned alot from you Raph. Jason |

One weird thing to add, If I sit down and write my little butt off,and come up with something I think is decent.I often get blocked for days, or even weeks after posting it. Anyone else get blocked after writing something they think is good? Jason |

Yes, Jason....I get blocked after posting too! I posted a rictameter the other day which I really liked....now....nothing...I mean....ziltch! My brain is like the piece of paper on my desk....BLANK. "How do you write your poems?" Carefully. If people seem unnaturally stressed over events, I will not put up something that will keep them there. I will want to put up something that will help ease the stress. One word at a time. Sometimes I will go to a dictionary and just pluck out a word. Or I will be reading someone's work and a word will come to me. Bam. Everything goes down until I draw more on this one word. With research. As with "Amazing Grace", I did some research on the creator of the song. From that research, a poem was birthed. I love doing research, when it leads to something more. No stress. I use to stress over my poetry. So many poets in a much smaller PiPland wrote so fluently, so frequently, and I felt so inadequate. With time, and some assistance from wonderful PiP friends, I learned to value what I do well, and continue to ask questions on what I don't do well. Take good critique with a dash of salt. There's critique, there's good critique, and there's downright slamming. I figure those who come in slamming haven't been here for awhile. So I tend to ignore them. It takes time to find the folks that know what they are talking about, so I do a lot of reading in Critical Analysis...so now and then I post in CA, and take my lumps. I like to use a phrase that someone gives me and twist it around to make something no one expects. I also like to write about current events if they're weird. Sometimes I can 'feed' off someone if they strike me just right but those to me sound forced. I just like to start out putting a line down on the page (I use my computer) and then write from there. If it's a rhyming poem and it's not working, I switch lines around until it feels right. |

First, by the dark of moon, I peel a piece of bark from a special black willow that grows down by the pond, and carve it out in heiroglyphics...  Yeah. And if you believe that, those twin spans in New Orleans are still for sale.Actually, much like Aenimal, I too tend to write straight to the submit box--lights, camera, action! sorta thing...but then I'll edit like the crazy woman I actually am. But then, I have poems written on cocktail napkins, matchbooks, papertowels, and once I wrote one in the circular around the nipple of my left breast.  I guess, what I mean to say is, I don't really have a plan...shrug. I just try to write fast enough to get the thoughts down before I forget 'em. But the inspiration tends to come from everywhere. Like Local Reb, I quite often write to music (usually instrumental tho) but find that the concept of "torchlusspanik" (um, 11th hour panic, roughly) tends to suit me best. The biggest obstacle to writing is getting ME out of the way. sober pause. Come to think of it, that's been an issue in many other concerns as well. I'm outta here before Dr. Freud shows up... |

It all depends on my mood. Sometimes I write them in my journal before attempting to sleep. Sometimes I write them with people over msn. Sometimes I write on the computer and right away post them, sometimes I get out my poetry book (which I've lost in a box somewhere  ) and write it in there... I'm a fan of pen and paper, it seems to work better for me that way. I tend to write spur of the moment but if you came into my little sanctuary here, you would find matchbook covers, napkins, ATM statements . . . with poems written on them. Always always carry paper and pen or some sort of suitable writing instrument. (I once wrote a poem with my eyeliner and on the palm of my hand) I love my journals. I try to write in these which I keep by my PC which are bordering around 15 or so by now. I can look back at my handwriting and the time it was written and why I wrote it. Is a jog down memory lane. Besides, I love the feel of the small book in my hand. A window to my soul. Sometimes, I have sat here and typed out something which I later said to self, "Self, who in the hell wrote that?" But that isnt too often. What I do is sit in the damn edit box for eternity, tweaking and editing and looking at it and editing again . . . I also keep a journal by my bed, you never know what you will wake up or go to sleep with. It's funny to look back at my writes when I was 16 and see that it was perfect rhyme every other line, huge handwriting and they were happy poems! Now, I see quick scribble, crossouts and half-written poetry. Sometimes a line will strike me in my head while I am doing something and have to jot it down later. Like: crawling in the mud my nails were filled with dirt means nothing One day, it will. I write from pain, pain seeps from my veins onto paper and into this room. If I write happy, it is usually because someone has made me feel good. I tend to write pain better than I do happy. I will never give up my paper and pen. I read Hendrix's journals and they were written on hotel scraps of paper and napkins . . . later to be made into, "The Wind Cries Mary." etc. Nice thread Raph also, if my PC dies, half of my heart goes with it because I never save save save what I write in here . . . it is always on paper first. Even when I do a duet - I am sitting here writing what the other person is typing. Gives me a feel for the whole write. I have yet to write a poem on my private anatomy (K ya have one up on me) and I always write my happy poems with love. Always. The bitter ones are meant for those who I never got the chance to say &%$# off to and I also love to reasearch a topic I know nothing about and write of it. Sometimes I just sit here and the birds chirping will cause me to write, other times one word will do it. I can tell you - that all of you have inspired me to write. You can see it in my writing here. A little bit of each of you grace these pages within my words. Why do I write? I just do . . . I write mostly in the morning, before noonish. I rarely post anything anywhere the day i write it, but like to pick things out at random and then just post 'em there. I can't think when I listen to music, nor any loud noises for that matter. It's rather surprising I get any writing done at all, because my moms always yelling at me to get off the computer, where I do most of my work. The sky inspires me heavily, especially twilight. How I write is with pen and paper. I am horrible with computers, as im sure you've noticed i can hardly even type. I write when there is an atmosphere or situation that I just feel the need to immortalize. Or to capture the theme or feelin to a meditation. or when I need to work something out in my head, or to work out symbolisms or to set down an observation or when im just feeling. but my all time favorite time to write is when those moments of supreme burning passion come tearing down upon me and I am left standing in an inferno of poetic flames and I burn the words onto the paper. |

Interesting discussion. I seem to start many of my poems in the middle of the night,or in the morning when I am half wake. Then I tweak it a little, but its usually almost ok at that point. Once in a while when I am really thinking about something particular, I can just straight write it onto the computer. And always, a certain person influences me to write, a thought of him, a word from him, out comes a poem. Sandra |
