Wednesday night, hurrying before it got dark, i rushed to get the garbage out to the street for the next day's pick up. I wanted to see where i was walking because our drive is steep and ices over easily. I was being very careful and had nearly reached the final destination when i stepped on a patch of black ice... and down i went. That really pissed me off. I checked to see if everything was working and it appeared to be, so i tried to get up, but when i put pressure on my foot - i nearly passed out. "Damn it" i thought, "i've twisted my ankle. I don't need this."

I began yelling for my daughter to come and help, but she was in the back of the house and with all the noisy stuff we had running, she didn't hear my yells. I tried again to get up with no success. So began yelling louder. Still no response from the house. I looked around at the other houses - warm lights coming from windows - cozy people inside watching tv, unaware that i'm wallowing on a hunk ice, covered in snow - freezing my buns off.

i yell some more... louder, taking deep breaths - sure the devil himself could hear me. nothing.

a teenaged girl came walking up the street. she lives about 2 houses down from us and had gone to her door to check for their mail, and heard me yelling and came to see if she could help. She, at my instructions, went up to the house, knocked on the door and yelled, but still no one came to the door. Well, rats. No way was that slip of a girl going to have any success in getting me up.

The rolled over garbage can was a few feet from me and I scooted over, hoisted my ass up and hugged that damn can for dear life, asked God to help me up out of my predicament, and finally managed to get myself standing erect. My little rescurer came to put the garbage can over at the side of the street and slipped on the same patch of ice i had fallen on. I grabbed her, and we managed, somehow to both keep standing.

After profusely thanking my young hero, i managed to hobble back up the drive and into the house before collapsing. My kid had heard some "sounds" but thought it was just me cooking supper. She was unaware that I had left the house. Still having vicodans left over from surgery last summer, i took a healthy dose and slept the night away.

I figured a sprain would wait until i got to my doctor the next day, not wanting to go through an emergency room ordeal. However, when i called my doctor yesterday she was not working, nor any doctors in the office. I was told I would have to go to the emergency room.... i was thankful that, at the very least, the foot couldn't be broken because i was able to hobble around on it.

went in to work until my friend Stacy was able to get me to the emergency room in the afternoon... x-rays completed and the sprain isn't - a sprain that is... stupid ankle IS broken. i have a temporary cast, crutches and instructions to "stay off my foot"....

RATS
RATS
RATS

Today I have to make arrangements to go see an orthopedic doctor and get a permanent cast on.

All of this to share some advice...

1. if you're an old lady - stay away from black ice (hard to do since it is virtually invisible)

2. if you're an old lady -when you take the garbage out be sure the person you live with, knows you have left the building...

3. whether you are an old lady or not, manage to have lots of vicodan in the house. you never know when you'll need a dose.

Ouch is right! I hope you don't have too many more problems with your ankle. Smile, winter is almost over! (I hope...)

Oh abbe, I am so sorry this happend to you.  I do know how you feel I broke my foot twice one year after the other, And a finger in between those years.  However, at least it was winter when you fell and the ice was to blame.  With me it was my own dumb fault.! I broke my foot the first time getting out of a car and the second time falling out of bed!!

My thoughts are with you for a speedy recovery! feel better soon.
