Buenos Nochas  Pretty self explanatory(sp) title... lol. Please, everyone, what is your your favorite 'didn't catch the wave' or 'never made it' bands? You can give one, none, ten, as many as you feel led, but I'm a music-addicted man, and I'm always looking for more.  I have a few, but on a random note, who here likes Pete Yorn? I've spent a few hundred at BMG Music Service the past month or so, and his latest was one I bought, hoping I'd like. I LOVE it. Simply superb. I defiently recommend it. So, do tell. Please.  (smiles) Actually I have heard Pete Yorn on adult alternative stations here; his songs Life On A Chain and Strange Condition have gotten some airplay, though they are not Top 10 hits. I wish For Nancy and Closet got some airplay too, Pete Yorn is an awesome newcomer! Despite his failure to follow in the same successful footsteps as labelmates John Mayer and Five For Fighting, he has sold over 500,000 copies of his debut album, not too bad! Yay!!! Another band I really love that has never made it big is the local Boulder bands near me The String Cheese Incident and Leftover Salmon. They can jam! Don't know if they are my favorite-- funny, I suppose if they had made it? shrug IF is a very big two letter word... took up fifteen years of my life. But hey? It's great writing material. Their name (and I got booted out of many a band meeting for this because I told them it was an awful name--THE REBELS.) tsk...too bad, too sad...they were ahead of the times then, and NOW? sadly? THEY are using a rock and roll calendar to wipe...er... well...heh.  nevermind |

Well my favourite unsuccesful band are called 'Just Jinger', I say they are unsuccesful but they are very big in South Africa but they have never managed to make it over here to England and I assume they havent made it in America either, absoultly inspirational band, kind of hard to explain their sound, they are sort of unusual, I can't think of another band who they sound like, |

If i had to choose Acid bath, but they are not around anymore. So with that said i would have to say Our Fall from kinder,Louisiana and or alot of other local bands around louisiana |

Whipping boy, not the awful punk band from the 80's. Whipping Boy were billed, rightly so, as the next big thing to come out of Ireland in the early 90's. Their second album "heartworm" was a cult hit over here. They were the first band I was live. An Amazing band full of punk energy. Their sound, well it has changed alot over the course of three albums. Their first album, "submarine" is kind of Sonic youth meets the pixies. The second album Heartworm is described by www.allmusic.com as "Heartworm is an earth-shatteringly powerful experience from a previously unheralded band... so unsettling and dangerous, yet beautiful and moving" It has the energy of Nirvana, the hooks of the Pumkpkins, the eerie atmosphere of Joy Division. They are influenced by the velvet underground, my bloody valentine, the fall. It is an amazing album, highlights "we don't need nobody else, twinkle, tripped" Well the whole album is great. Sony dropped them after this album. they released one more album on an independent label and split up. Their third album, entitled "whipping boy" is less driven, more relaxed songs, a very beautiful album. In my mind they are far better than U2. The best irish band, along with Thin Lizzy. Sadly they never mad it big.  El riesgo vive siempre! |

This question isn't fair... I'm the underground wonder. None of my bands ever made it big, 'cept the mainstreamers who ended up falling flat on their face after a bit o' success.Um... So Tapping the Vein and Razed in Black don't count, right? Bein' underground and all... Um... LiveOnRelease! They had one huge single way up north here (I'm Afraid of Britney Spears), and now everyone's forgotten they ever were... Poor grrls! So young, too. *pout* Oh, but hey... If this is just all about unsuccesful, I guess that does let most of my bands count. Hee hee. So, right now, my favourite unsuccesful band is Razed in Black. Yummy.... Trance-industrial... your tongue's like poison |

you know though, Anvrill, it might be better that way. a lot of the underground biggies lose their spice when they go mainstream... Metallica, Misfits, Live (though i still think they rock), NIN, Chris Cornell (think Temple of the Dog, Soundgarden), and dozens of others - i could probably list them off all day here. There seems to be something that happens to these bands (production input?) that seems to skim away some of their vitality. just my op. |

Want to know something sweet? I know two of the LiveOnRelease band members, the bass player and the drummer. I'm good friends with their little sisters, and the members themselves are only a year older than me. I heard they're coming out with a second album soon.Kielo |

MO HO BISH O PI are my favourite unsuccessful band, I saw them supporting my favourite band and they were really cool but I couldn't find their album anywhere until I checked the local music store where my mate works and he was like... "oh yeah we got that" so he picks out a cardboard box and it's the only copy of the Album underneath all sorts rubbish (Britney Spears singles etc..) Another band I like who haven't done too badly are Sahara Hotnights who are a female swedish four peice guitar band Andrew [5thC]: Making you believe the unbelievable |

Not the new unsucsessful version of Sky, but the older version. The two guys. Savage Garden. They were my absolute fave. Oooh! Oooh! Everything But the Girl! I loved them so much!! OK, I'm going to go out on a limb here...my pick for "least noticed" but "most deserving" is Wendy and Lisa (Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman). For those of you who are not familiar with Prince's older music (circa 80's), they were half of his band, the Revolution. After he disbanded the Revolution, they went solo and have since recorded several albums as well as doing backup/sessions for other bigname acts (Sheryl Crow and Seal come to mind). They had one minor hit with the single "Waterfalls" off of their first album, but haven't garnered any radio airplay since then although they maintain a strong fan base. Like Prince, their music has its origins in funk/soul but theirs is a much "looser" sound and their songs have a more experimental feel... almost sparse by comparison to their purple "mentor". Their lyrics are quite introspective too and not as vague as Prince's tend to be at times. I strongly recommend them. Ok, I'll get off the "stump" now (lol)...next? - Jeff |

In the rest of Canada, Savage Garden were huge for their first album, but or more or less nonexistant on the second. But they really did break through into the mainstream with I Want You, and they held on strong until they were silly enough to make Break Me Shake Me a single; I don't think their pop fans trusted them after that really harsh song. I like 'em. Maybe too much. My one true interest in the sap-pop world.your tongue's like poison |

What is unsucessful? I listen to a few bands that have three or four albums and still haven't broken through in American but whom are happy to with their sales in the rest of the world, then I know a couple of bands just starting out who deem themselves sucessful as they get to play a few local concert halls. Being unsucessful is relative to the band's goals obviously your talking about commercial success and sales but sales are not everything. British Bands who deserve commercial success in America. Ash, Feeder, Muse, Elbow, Doves, The Cooper Temple Clause and maybe My Vitriol. How many will get it, probably maybe two which is a shame as they all make great music. |

"Being unsucessful is relative to the band's goals" Andrew, well said. When I use the term unsuccessful, yes, I'm using it to define a lack of commercial sales. The reason I'm wording it that way (and, while I'm most familiar with American sales, I'm intruged by sales worldwirde), is because I'm interested in those bands which lacking commercial success are still a talented group of musicians. Music being a passion of mine, finding bands with some high level of commercial success, and maybe even a bit less, isn't hard to do, and I do it. Finding the bands that aren't easily accessable is what I'm looking to do, and doing so by picking the brains of music lovers here on pip, and if I'm inspired to buy them, I can henceforth (correct word, right? lol) decide if they're to my liking. In America, Savage Garden was pretty successful. I don't know numbers, but their mainstream level of... what's the word I'm looking for? Their were decently known. Their biggest song to me (I've heard it a lot, even post breakup) was "Truly Madly Deeply." Sincerely, Titus "My imaginary friend thinks you have serious mental problems." Authority Zero!!! My sister worked, for a while, with a frind of the bands. I got a copy of their cd before it hit stores. I honestly don't know if it has hit stores yet. I was stoked. They have a funny video on Much Music's rotation right now.I've heard of Seether. Yes, they're big in the UK, but in Canada they're still way unheard of. It's just about impossible to get their CD here... I'm still trying to bully Future Shop into ordering it for me. OK, I have one more rather weird addition to this list and before anyone here groans in "Bubble Gum Pop Agony" (lol), hear me out. I think an artist who is WAY overdue for some recognition is Rick Springfield. I know what you're saying - "But he had that huge hit "Jessie's Girl" in the early 80's along with a few other pop hits...and he was a heartthrob on General Hospital...and he was all flash and image...etc..." I point him out because although he had his share of success, his personal problems (depression, 4 wheeler accident) pulled him out of the limelight just as he was perfecting his craft. While his earlier "hits" are admittedly a little too mainstream pop for most tastes, his later albums show a much broader musical range and influence and his lyrics are much more introspective and deeply personal as well as better written. I highly recommend picking up his three most recent albums (Tao, Rock Of Life, and Karma) as well as his collaboration with other musicians under the name of Sahara Snow. They are totally unlike his earlier material and you won't be disappointed even though he'll never have another "top 10" hit or receieve critical acclaim. (He also kicks ass in concert! lol) - Jeff |

The Chameleons from the UK. They've always been my fav band, and have quite a few albums (been around off and on since the mid eighties), but they've never had more than a cult following. They played in Toronto last night, but I had a ton of school work (went back to University part time), that I couldn't go. But they're in Buffalo on Saturday, so I'm hoping to get someone to go with me. The last time they played Toronto, it just happened to be my birthday....best present I ever got!!! You can never win or lose |

I just found a new band to obsess about, they are called "Death cab for cutie" I saw them live at a festival recently and I really enjoyed their set (it was one of the first on a three day festival) and well I thought I'd look them up. Marshalzu, I have to disagree with you Ash are Irish. Normally things like that don't bother me but in an english newspaper recently published a list of the top hundred most important british people. Bono was in it, along with a few other Irish people. Anyway had my little rant. Mansun used to be my favourite unsuccessful band. I guess their their first album was big their second and third albums weren't that big. Their third was awful. Also Manic street preachers, though they are big in Europe. El riesgo vive siempre! |

Sorry brian, I know Ash are Irish (I'm just wishing they were English) and yes it is irritating how the English press seem to grab any band that are half decent and make them British. It irritates me as well as I know better to lump them in with the rest of British Bands. |

Ash you can't have, but you are welcome to The Coors and westlife. Remember that some of the best rock bands have come from Britain. The only modern band I really like is radiohead. Though the 60's, 70's early 80's was a golden age for great British bands. Lepplin, The kinks, Black Sabbath, and the whole punk post punk thing.... the cure, the clash, Joy division, the buzzcocks, Sex pistols. and Magazine, one of the most under rated bands ever. They have been a huge influence on bands like Radiohead, Muse, Mansun. El riesgo vive siempre! |
