I'm obsessed with names. I have a list of over four hundred names I have come across in my searches that I really, really, really, really like either the sound of or the meaning of (or both!).

So I'm curious about other people and their reaction to names. I like reeeaaallly out-there ones.

For favourite meaning, I'd have to go for:

Lolymiya. A female name meaning beautiful pain.

*thump*

Favourite sound male names:

Kieran - little dark one.
Ingrum - angel-raven/Ing's raven.

Favourite sound female names:

Katia - pure. (Mikhail, shut up.)
Damarys - gentle.

You don't hafta be as fancy and technical as me. Just what's your favourite girl's name and favourite boy's name? Even your favourite animal's name! (Mine is Squeak; Squeak the Weasel, my poor baby weekend weasel.)

Oh, and my favourite made-by-me name is:

Belsapheme. Second only to Anvrill.

There is this hippy lady I know? grinning...she goes by the name of

"Petunia Peace"

and? I used to do a LOT of filing when I worked for the humble state of Louisiana...and there were a couple that stood out--

"Luscious Pea" (think mom saw Jerry Springer potential?)

"Long Dhang Wang" (I am not kidding. I almost looked this guy up...er.. AND down.)

Anita Plugh (pronounced "plug") and no, I DIDN'T ASK WHY.

*shaking me head*

But hmmm...were you asking, if I could be made over? IN MY OWN IMAGE.

sigh...I'd KEEP my name...

grin...almost forgot the name of one of my favorite columnists. Les Payne. I read his name, and thought, "of course. certainly. Less Pain...." I thought it a perfect name for a writer.

I personally feel that names should be kept simple... I see children with multi-syllabic or ultra-symbolic names and I wonder if the parents just wanted to make them into their won personal art projects, I mean, yeah, a parent does take liberty in naming their children but... I guess I just like simple names... Ann, Helen, Faye... For boys I like Micheal (not shortened), and actually, that's all I can think of at the moment.

Oooh...Kieran is very cool....love how that sounds...very poetic and sexy
hey Lori...what does Anvrill mean? if ya dont mind me asking...and Belsapheme is very cool too...

KA?...yer so bad
and yer name fits you so perfectly I cant imagine ya with another one.

My daughter is the namesake of my most fav girls name, in 6th grade, there was character in a book I read with this name and I was so taken with it that I decided way back then my first girl would be Rachel Rene
Boys names I've always liked are Jason, Jon, Kevin, Marcus/Mark, Michael, Steven, but my son is a "Jr." so I had no choice on that one.

I've seen so many cool and unique names on  line and as poets/writers pen names...
and of course some of the classic poets names are so lovely...
but the most beautiful name I've ever heard and whispered into the wind will always be the one that holds my heart...

Anvrill is a made-up name. I was 9 years old when I made it up. I was writing a fantasy novel (hey, don't laugh; it's the sci-fi picture book I started when I was 5 that you should laugh at!), and I just made up a name for it. In the made-up world, in its made-up language, I decided that Anvrill meant raven.

So, in my own little world, Anvrill means raven!

In the real world, it's pretty gibberish.

Oh, and if I were to rename myself, I wouldn't know where to start!

I mean, dude, these are some names I've tossed around for my alter-egos or flights of fancy about actually changing me name (but nothing's ever worked), in approximate order of time:

Anvrill of Tarken. Krystal Ann Terran. Kimberly Shellan Vahn aka Kestrel. Paula Marie Summers. Geneva Rose Bradley. Adrienne Lee Draussen. Lauren Nokomis Karsela. Isadorah Blythe Karsela. Tivona Leigh Karsela. Kimberly Ann Standen aka Kim Kissably.

You will notice Ann in two names. Those are the two alter-egos who most closely reflected myself. (And the names ending in Karsela are the real ones I've been tossing around, just to have fun. Karsela is a loooong story. But no female names ever really hit me right for me, so I'm stuck. ) They have Ann there, 'cause I'm Lori-Anne. Part of the L-A twins. The other poetess/songstress/alt-grrl/major brat I know best is Leonie-Arianne, born a month to the day later than me, and very cool.

Of course, I stick to Lori and she sticks to Leonie. Full names be scary.

For a girl, always, always wanted Rene somewhere in the name (preferably the middle)...

Favorite pet names? There was Cat (short for blankblankingblankblakityblankcat when she'd jump on bare skin in the middle of the night, claws seeking flesh) and I had two goldfish that actually lived: moist and drip.

When I was young, I wanted to change my name...it, too, is "made up" but not by my choice...

it was in my late teens that I finally started feeling at home with my name [note, I am one of those odd folks with NO middle name...]

now, I don't think I would trade it at all, but Anvrill, if you EVER find anything close to my name with a meaning behind it, let me know, OK, because dang if I can find one....

my daughter is the object of my first attempt...Caiya Rhiannon (Stevie Nicks song- of course!)*goddess of birds & steeds* in the song...

and our next ~be a boy~ will be Phoenix somethen...when I decide...

maybe the next girl Jezzy? I dunno..get back to you on that...

I remember when I was a little kid, I got a book on the structure of atoms. On the outside it said "With 13 full-colour illustrations." And something that included the word "centre." I was like, wha'?

Then I opened th' inside. The authors were from Canada. (wow, I just remembered, that was the same year I read about Mt. St. Helens and had to look up the word "vast" in the dictionary)

In other words ... me bad with names.

My father saves names, usually wild and crazy ones. He has a list he calls Names You should never name your children, they are all real names he has collected over the years and some are hilarious. I guess I shouldn't post any here as if someone has or has used one it would hurt someones feelings.

Hmmph, I left somethin' out...

In made-up names, I should add Ezrin. He's one of my imps. He is sooo adorable. I have...nine imps and faeries scattered across my room (and five gargoyles and three dragons), and each has a funky li'l name I made up. Ezrin, by far, is the coolest.

I even assigned them their own li'l families. I need a life. But at least I have fun!

I prefer names that are not common. It drives me up a wall that my name is Jaime and that there's 3 girls in school with that name. And there's even more where that came from. However, I was named after the Bionic Woman so it's okay.

For girls:
Bianca (that is such a pretty, I'm-a-princess-bitch name)

Enid (inspired by Ghost World)

Tahima (it means surrounded by nature or something)

Paris (I dig the whole France thing)

Skylar (what my mom was going to name me.. I like it's cool)

I also like girls having guy names. Like James, Billy, Max, etc.

For guys...

Maddox (inspired by Angie's adopted child)

Mykell (pronounced mih-kell.. I like the way it sounds)

Jack (The Nightmare Before Christmas? Just Jack? Need I say more...)

that's so wierd....one my fav names (wish it was mine and maybe it'll be my son's) is a deviation of Kieran...Corran.

and i don't know why i like the name Mirax for a girl...it looks so cool, but out loud it sounds like a dot-com company.
but i like it...

and the name Ethan is always cool.
