Something About a Starling (A small story) I sat and watched a Starling Build his home of straw It was in the old lead piping Just above the door All day long he toiled Working on the wing And though in heat he boiled He didn’t miss a thing When he got tired he rested On the roof top there The work that he’d invested I thought it rather rare And then came Mrs Starling Big and bold and brash And with her beak so pointed She gave the boy a lash She tore at the work of wonder And threw it to the ground This just was not good enough Not while she’s around Now he sits dejected He doesn’t chirp a word Now that’s what I call A HEN PECKED little BIRD The Pheasant and the Crow (A bigger story) Just beside the roadside A Pheasant lying dead Hit by a car while crossing Now what got in her head? Just by a Crow sits looking Perched upon his seat He’d like to pick the carcase All that tender meat Now you might shout distasteful Depending how you feel That was some chicks’ mother But to the Crow it’s just a meal Jon Mewett I like to write nursery rhyme type things sometimes. I think birds are not only graceful they are also comical and tragic at times. |

I was going to say as soon as I started to read this how much it sounded like a nursury rhyme or children's book - something you should look into. I really liked the first one. It was a lovely, detailed observation of something people may often see - if they just take the time to look up. "Be yourself... No matter what they say" - Sting |

Loved both of them Jon. As a long time bird feeder watcher the description of birds that comes to mind is pragmatic. |

Jon, you wove your usual attention-getting stories. I had a good laugh with the Starling (no further comments ). Although I'm not into roadside meals , the second one brought about a giggle because of the way you wrote about it. Jon, Both of these are excellent, I never really have gotten a chance to watch a bird build a nest but you gave a marvelous depiction here, hope I get the joy some day. Now I'm not sure if I have ever seen a pheasant either, but do know those crows will eat anything laying in the road that looks like a good meal. |

Jon, I loved these. The starling one is my favorite. Got the chance to watch a blue jay build a nest last year above the bench I usually sit at and read during my lunch break at work. It really is a wonderous sight to observe our avian friends in action. Sheila ...the earth and myself are of one mind. The measure of the land and the measure of our bodies are the same........... I don't know how you do it Jon, I just wish I could I feel a certain affinity with Mr Starling...lol How cruel nature sometimes seems, but the crow could have chicks waiting with gaping beaks too. |
