Aiming for things that can never be reached
Ignoring things that are there.
Never knowing what's in store
Because you're afraid to prepare.

All these trivial things you do
Are as useless at shooting at the moon.
Fire your bullets from a closer range
Because your barrel will be empty soon.

You don't mind missing the bull's-eye
Or placing such a high bid,
'Cause you know that no one ever assumed
You'd even make it as far as you did.

To get a better vantage point
Just move your target nearby,
Sure, there'll be more expected of you
But I know you can hit it if you try.

I think peoples expectations of you can sometimes be a burden and sometimes a dissapointment.

Like Sting says 'Be yourself..No matter what they say'.
I like the confused feel to your poem.
A true reflection of your thoughts?

But if you don't shoot for the moon you won't reach the stars.

Heather,

Very good piece.  Others' expectations should be considered, but meeting our own is what's most important.

Just make sure that what you are aiming for is what you want. If it is you will most likely succeed!

I agree with Lost Dreamer sometimes we have to dream the impossible dream ... nice poem

Well, with my demented mind, I thought the title was gonna be about something else. LOL

Great poem, Heather. There are two ways to look at this:
Either the mountain can come to Mohamed or Mohamed can go to the mountain.

But "your reach should excede your grasp or what's a heaven for?"

But you also need to set realistic goals.

thanks for reading evryone!

what i was trying to say with this poem is that people (myself included) sometimes don't set realistic goals beacause they are too afraid that if they don't reach them they will be looked upon as a failure; instead, they play it safe talking about impossible goals that no one expects them to achieve anyway, that way they will never disappoint people but they will also never have the satisfaction of reaching their goals.
