GARLIC AT NIGHT The sound was like a movement, not really there at all, Just a feeling really, like hearing a snowflake fall. But something within me was telling me, we were not alone, The night was black, no moon or bright star shown. A lonely outpost,A Marine fire team, that's only four, Were here to watch and listin, we don't want a war. We have no radio, no one to help us if things go bad, But we have been there before, as many before us had. Bates, my team leader slides over, whispers soft, someones out there, Yea I know, I better wake Larry and Ogle, they need to share this scare. They woke at my touch, sensing danger, I whispered, gooks, they knew, Four men, straining to hear, unable to see, just be ready, was all they could do. The smell of garlic suddenly was in the air, hair on four necks rose, We knew the smell , and knew where it went, a gook goes. Still no sound, the darkness seems to deepen, got to watch your imagination, Time for experence to play its role, you have to know your situation. The night finally passed, with the light of day always comes a sense of relief, Once more we had made it through a night without coming to grief. Two more days and nights we stayed, doing our watching, and being quiet, Though nothing happened, I know all four of us, to a man, recall that night. |

Good story! Do you have a Veterans group that you share these with? I would imagine they would be well received there too.... keep them coming! |

Bill, your usual vivid work. I felt fear as I read, wondering what will the outcome be? ...Give me the strength to walk the soft earth, a relative to all that is.... Black Eagle Oglala Sioux holy man |

I share with you here at the pub, I do believe Childomine has taken some to the VA hosp. where she helps out, which is fine as she knows, I think we all can appreciate the stress in a situation like that, Side story to that, When we left that outpost, we came out a different way, of course, and in the stream above where we had used the clear cool water, lay a dead gook, But he was long past the ripe stage so no ill effects. My lunch story... |

War carries with it many emotions. You seem to convey them very well, Bill. You take the reader right into every scene that you paint. Denise |
