RIBBONS BEHIND THE GLASS I see them there, behind that wall of glass, bright like the sun, They are colorful, like a jewel, each and every one. To some, they look like a beautiful flowers that have been tossed, To those of us who know, it's not the beauty, it's the cost. There is one that's purple, it's only associated with pain, Some of my friends earned that one, again and again. One is bright yellow and red, it says you were in the fight, We didn't need a ribbon to tell us that was right. The president said we were deserving, so he gave us one to, United Nations, not to be out done, gave us one that was blue. For years of service without a blemish, it was blue and red, If they had known all I did, it would have been the brig instead. There are many others, more blues yellows and reds, tributes from other lands, They are meaningful to us, but it seems no one cares or understands. It isn't about what is behind that glass, or what is on my chest, It's about what we gave, for we left behind some of the very best. So the next time you see a serviceman, with ribbons on his chest, Give him a smile and a hello, for he has no doubt, done his very best For he asks for nothing more, he needs no parades or a band, He only wants you to aknowledge, that he did his best, for this land. |

We all owe a debt that we can't repay to all those brave men and women. Thank you Bill for your contribution to our country and the preservation of its freedom. This is a wonderful poem. Denise |

Bill, There can never be enough medals or awards given to those in the military, especially wartime vets. But, all the medals in the world can never compensate for what the individuals had to endure and give of themselves in order for the rest of us exist away from the line of fire. Sheila ...the earth and myself are of one mind. The measure of the land and the measure of our bodies are the same........... Joseph, Nez Perce Chief |

Bill medals seem so small compared to the sacrafices givin by our Veterans. And as Denise and Sheila said, we owe Veterans more than we could ever repay. I know a lot of Veterans and who they were was changed by the horrors that they lived through. A medal just doesn't seem enough to suffice. Your poems keep these men and women at the forefront of our thoughts - where they should be. [This message has been edited by childomine (edited 03-21-2000).] |

Great poem Bill My memory of those ribbons is mostly on the chests of Veterans marching to the Tomb of The Unknown Warrior. Lest we forget. |
