              FIGURES ON THE WALL

They are there each day, they seem to beckon to me,
The faces are calm, I recognize each one I see.
There are two little boys, from a long time ago,
Eyes wide and innocent, both faces seem to glow.

Two brothers, each with a small puppy to hold,
Two men now, both growing old.
But between then and now, what a great life they had,
With laughter and tears, they had it good and bad.

I see a young man in uniform, how strong he seems to be,
His face unlined, eyes bright and clear, war yet to see.
Above him is another, jaw firmly set, a helmet casts a shadow,
On eyes no longer bright or clear, aware now of things he'd rather not know.

Gone forever is that young handsome boy, in his place I see,
A man who's life was changed, youth taken away, so a people could be free.
But do not feel sorry for this man, for his life only changed,
Not ended or hampered in any way, only for the better, was it rearranged.

I see a handsome young man, holding a laughing baby boy,
Then another of a grey haired man, with this same bundle of joy.
There is a beautiful young woman, with a darling blonde haired girl,
And the same old man, holding his precious pearl.

There is a smiling man, standing close to a lovely lass,
Just to look at her, you know this gal has class.
Now each day I will look again, from fall to fall,
But as you know, I will see more, than figures on a wall.

Bill,

You are so talented.  This is a lovely poem.  I have seen how the military can change people, and often for the better.
Don't ever hesitate again to post your work here, it certainly is enjoyed.

..."But, as you know, I will see more than figures on a wall"...

Bill you really are very good about expressing yourself in ways that make it easy for the reader to understand.  Another outstanding job!

This is a very touching poem. I especially loved the last line. They surely are more than figures on a wall.

Such portraits are painted with your words...they evoke such emotion in me.  I am delighted at the chance of reading each new poetic masterpiece William--Thank You!  --Jamie
