The Deaths of Knights and Dragons Battles commensing on fields and skies far and close to home Raging, suffocating, completely enthralling the needed evil We call Death as he drifts through The wash of bloodied scales and singed metal Making sprites shiver, elves dash away, and glaring coldly At the unicorn's last breath As it shudders -once- And fades away Amidst the flurry of the war forever resurrecting Bodies cried out in pain, alike, As serpentine dragons writhed like ribbons dancing As knights stopped their last struggles And Pegasus fell from the sky Driving himself into the mud and toil The herald of inspiriration's fallen grace not noticed Save by the tears of the Muses "Stop this madness!" the peaceful folk cried at last Gathering with the unicorns smashing into armor Breaking their horns pure and changing them forever From images of innocence and grace To the war horses swift of foot and healing Even as their coats of starry white Turned red Colts shaken to see their parents die "What of their pain, too?" a griffen spoke Corning the leaders of the war with no sides Just fighting for its sake, listening to their heart's rage Watching a companion fall And telling themselves that they would revenge themselves By sending another spirit to the sky And letting another tear fall "Let them die," they replied, eyeing each other with menace Only stopped by the large beast's beauty As she stepped between them, proud and sad Turning away from the battle to lower her ears and sigh The sigh of accepting and knowing the end would be soon for them Later they would find her speared through the heart, wings torn And soldiers and beasts said alike: "She took that spear for us." Never agreeing that she had died for each other and only themselves Finally all that was left were one from each side Battled to their spirit's limit, hungry to settle their mourning cry Killing each other in a final leap of hatred and loss A dragon and knight dying beside each other in a pool of liquid ruby Suddenly wondering what had driven them so Seeing all the losses cause by a battle they hated so much That all the people built from magic had to suffer Until none was left to live on A child ran up to them, seeing their breathing slow She was of mundane race: normal for the new dawning day She was crying bitterly, throwing herself to be comforted between them Asking what had been wrong Then staring at each other in surprise at this sign of similarity Before Death's hand struck Pulling them away to bathe in the pools But they could hear her words "Don't leave, don't go!" she cried. "What shall I ever do without you all To keep me safe from nightmares? How could you do this? How could you kill all the fairy tales?" Then her mother called her from the city as she raced home, crying Opening her fairy tale book only to burst out sobbing And it echoed across the world The pages, pictures and words of the tales Were empty Okay, so it was pointless. Sorry everyone. I'll do better next time. ~Astraea "Sometimes stars can only be seen in darkness." "Sorrow's crown of sorrow is remembering happier things." |
