I see her everytime I go Into the city and I know, Just where she lives but not her name And it has always seemed a shame, That we can't visit on our way And add a bright spot to our day. I always smile and say: "Hello" And she responds, but lets me know That she prefers to sit alone. I feel rebuffed and yet I've known From the first, no inclination Lay in casual conversation. Now she's not pretty, but her face Is memorable and from my place, I study her and try to find What keeps her image in my mind. I think it is the sadness there. An element of deep despair. She wears a cloak of mystery And fascinates a part of me, That always wants to understand The "ins" and "outs" of what's at hand And so we ride, day after day. She in her seat across the way. I guess that it will never change And yet, it does seem very strange, Two people all alone, as we, Can't join in camaraderie. Elton John is playing as I read this, Betty. "It's No Sacrifice" Ya know it kinda fits. Good definition of our human frailty, and a good read. Thanks. "I hate quotes, they suck!" |

Thanks Joyce: This is written about a memory from World War ll. I always felt she had been wounded by the war. Betty Lou Hebert |
