THE PRICE OF "JOY" Looking back, they say you should never do it, it isn't cool, I for one do not agree, my happiest time came in school. Take the time our Principal, Mr. Wood, greeted us with such cheer, He was very happy that cold morning, that is until the snowball hit his ear. I don't know why I did it, perhaps I was led by my hatred for the man, I know that nine year olds act on instinct, not on a plan. All I know is that the joy I felt that morning, I still feel today, Perhaps it was the beatings he gave me that makes me feel that way. I finally made it to Jr. High, now I am out of his grasp for all time, But on the first fay of school, he walks up to me and said, your butt is still mine. Now I know the man didn't like me,I'd given him not one moment of cheer, Would I never get rid of him, why did he follow me here? I spent many hours, planning ways to torment that evil man, For he was the Devil I knew, he did things only Satan can. The man expelled me from school, just because of a fight, My folks went to the School board and got things right. As I entered High School, I was no longer under his care, But I hadn't forgot him, the memory of those beatings were still there. But it wasn't to be, I was never to have my moment of joy, He moved away, to another town, there I am sure, to torment another innocent boy. Many years later, I was talking to a visiting pastorafter services one day, We talked of that little town where I grew up, so far away. He spoke of a dear friend he had there, a Christian man, kind and good, He said I probably had met him, his name was Arthur Wood. |

Thank you Kim, you are very kind to me. I must confess, I still feel about that man the same way. Just a character flaw I guess... bill |

You young people may not know this, back in the 30s when I was a kid, it was customary for teachers to whip kids, I was whipped with a rubber hose when I was in grade school, no joke. bill |

We are many things to many people, the true test of our character is being consistent in all our dealings. Unfortunately there is some "Mr. Wood" in many of us. Thanks for sharing this narrative with us!Dennis :^) |

There seems to be a misunderstanding here, must be my fault. This was ment to be humorus, with a little pain tossed in, thus the title "The price of Joy", I must have slipped. Although I have no love for this man, I thought it funny that I would meet a Pastor who thought so much of him, I guess that is why my poems arent in books, right? Thanks for all your comments this has been fun. Mabe I will bother you again some day. |
