When the angel of death
finally knocks lightly
at my door
and beckons me to follow

When the tally book is opened
by those bony fingers
and they slide slowly
down the columns of my life

adding, subtracting
assigning a score
deciding my fate
for all eternity

what will I feel
when I arrive
at my destination
will it be remorse

will I find the peace
that eluded me in life
will I have friends there
or will I be alone

will the sun finally shine
upon this troubled soul
riddled with the mistakes
of a lifetime

or will the total darkness
of oblivion
cover me with
the endless sleep of emptiness

Only the angel of death
knows for sure
and, alas
he speaks not to me

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

Pegasus, I for one, am very glad he doesn't speak with you..    I'd miss your words if he did...Very good read.  It gave me chills.

Pegasus; Your poetry, as always, is written beautifully. This one has a sad and dark message. I personally think you are much too hard on yourself. We've all made some bad mistakes. I will pray for a large dose of self-forgiveness for you this thanksgiving, I've needed it in the past, and when it was granted, I was reborn. Ellie

A dark one, but written very well. Don't be so hard on yourself hun.  Keep that chin up and keep writing.....it's medicine for the soul.

I wonder too what's going to happen to me after I die. Sometimes I think that's the only thing that unites people. Nobody really knows the answer to that question.
Anyway.  I enjoyed the imagery too.

Pegasus~
This is a wonderfully contemplative piece.
I like pondering poetry - I do like this.

peg, this was a most successful writing exercise in my opinion..i think most of us have asked the exact questions at one point or another....

hmmmm....not directly relevant but if the angel of death comes to visit me, i think the questions to which i will really like the answers to are:1)have i made a difference in this world?...2)will I be missed?

thanx for the reflection
