           Absent But Not Forgotten

As I sat there and watched them, several thoughts came to mind,
One was that these men were the real heros of their time.
We were at a dinner, one held for only a select few,
I deemed it an honor, to be sitting there, one of them too.

As we told a little of our experence, in that far off place,
I watched closely as each man spoke, there was sadness in each face.
They spoke mostly of comrades lost, the names deepened their pain,
They spoke with a passion, some their sorry unable to contain.

One told of a night at Chosin, said he knew he was freezing to death, but it felt ok,
Told of the corpsman who saved him, and how he doesn't know his name today.
Another spoke of the bullet that went through him, thinking he had breathed his last,
Instead he told of three years in a hospital,13 months in a body cast.

I listened as my friend Tom, softly spoke of his twenty two years in the Corps,
To modest to tell of his many wounds, the last ruining his body forever more,
His gray hair and lined face a far cry from the strong pal I knew in 52,
Yes, those around this table are the lucky ones, but we haven't forgotten you.

You are in this room, your spirit is within each of us, we know what we owe,
And as we think of each of you, we know we will seek your courage, when we have to go.
We all have many names on our heart this night, they will stay forever,
Age and time take many things from us in this life, but not your memory, no never.

For we still see your youthful face, hear your voice as you speak our name,
We also see your dying face, your wounds, we will never be the same.
Our lives have been lived because of you, our children are here, grand children too,
So it is with grateful hearts that we remember, proud that we had the honor, to know you.

This is a truly marvellous poem and excellently carried off. I felt really touched by it, the things these men experienced were traumatic, yet they understate... That is real heroism. Wonderful poem to read, you really took us there. Thank you.

P.S. Line 8.

"They spoke with a passion, some their sorry unable to contain."

sorry = sorrow (?)

Very heartfelt and beautifully written...

With a little piece of tomorrow,
You'll have to kiss yesterday goodbye.
Because today won't last forever,
And the past will only make you cry.
