More bright, of course, we knew we were Than generations past All time before us but a blur Dark ages gone at last. We simply were superior How could one not agree Minds prior just inferior World’s saviour we would be. Fine words we spoke, pure gems of gold Were treasures to be sure Discarding tarnished trinkets old We stomped them on the floor. Invented peace and love, you know To justice we gave birth It wasn’t all that long ago Our truth would save the earth. But lessons both through joy and strife Can teach us many things This classroom that is known as life Humility it brings. Experience bestowed its touch Here’s wisdom youth can glean I didn’t really know so much …When I was seventeen. 11/99 |

So glad you brought this one back Denise, it is just wonderful!!! Boy can I relate to every word, and I'm going to show it to my sons (24 & 21) who seem to think, as I did at their age, that they know it all. What a great teacher life is....Thanks for sharing this. Bonnie |

Denise, wouldn't it be nice if we were half as smart and in control as we thought we were? Makes me laugh to think we were going to change the world (even if we did) when mostly we were stoned all the time...oh my! can anyone tell me where i stashed those cookies? bleeding... ok..so i was seventeen in the '80's!..but all the same..i think we all thought we knew it all at that age! and somehow the answers seemed easier to find at that time of life..i'd give anything to go back! but, alas...we must move on..! i really enjoyed this poem denise..and the joyous trip to the '70's!...and the fun rememberances of 17 .... thanks for sharing! dg ps..you guys did have some awesome music "Half of what i say is meaningless; but i say it so that the other half may reach you." -Kahlil Gibran |

Well, you may not have known it all at seventeen, but I sure did! LOL, just kidding. One of my memories of high school is remembering how, at the end of each year, I would think how smart I was. Then at the end of the following year, I'd realize just how stupid I had really been. Geez, just wait 'til I get older and older. Elizabeth Why ME??? |
