Tissue paper skin on the withered hands, showing the ravages of the years, still holding the needles with which she works her wonders. Sitting in the rocking chair, her blue/gray head slightly bowed, wire rimmed glasses resting, barely, on the end of her nose. She looks up through those milky blue eyes, over eighty, but there's a spark of youth, as she bats the still dark lashes. A flush of pink in her soft, wrinkled cheeks, and dimples that light up her face when she offers her welcoming smile, and shows off her latest creation. Arthritic knees barely hold her as she stands to give a comfortable hug, her sweet voice offers, as always, "iced tea or lemonade?" That politely refused, she again takes her place in the rocker, picks up her needles and continues, she needs only finish the edging now, and the soft pink blanket will be done. The click, click, click of those needles, barely heard as she weaves the yarn together, her translucent hands working their magic, for her namesake, little Mary Jane. The great granddaughter who will be wrapped, for her homecoming, in this blanket, spun with Grams pure love. |

Dear Bonnie; I love the way you've knitted this lovely story and made a treasure of a poetic yarn! This is so touching. I hope we live long enough to be able to make lovely gifts for our great grandchildren, or write sweet poems for them. love, Ellie Summers haunting melody that awakens the butterflies, calling them to join the dance in their silent song of praise to God. eL |

Bonnie~ You brought back some lovely memories of a grandmother of my children who made them each an afghan when they were in their early teens .. They all still have them though she is long gone. You did a beautiful job with this touching poem. ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ noles1@totcon.com |
