We were ten when the old nun died She taught at the parish school We thought she was really odd we thought we were cool. She used to tap her finger on the tip of her long pointed chin she never once smiled at us not even a little grin. We hid in the home room closet and heard her sing one day and when we did, we lost our will to scramble outside to play. Her voice was pure and lovely her song was simple and gay We heard her rejoicing in the song she sang that day. We often hid to hear her sing her secret song we wondered why she sang alone could she think a talent wrong What God would punish anyone whose voice was soft and good we wondered why she sang alone but never understood. When she was laid to rest at last and all the mourners were gone We crept onto her grave and sang her favorite song. We sang a song for Sister Jean A song we heard her sing We shed tears for the silence that her death knell would bring. (This is not a true story. I was given the phrase - a song for sister jean - as a challenge.) |

This may not be a true story, but there's truly a lesson here... Nicely done, PdV... |

Another great one Poet! Some of the nuns I recall from childhood aren't remembered as warmly though. |

Good grief deVine! First you have me nearly in tears and then I find out it's all made up! Now I am really crying! But it's a (boo hoo) good poem... |

Not a true story? Well Poet deVine I'd say you met and exceeded the challenge put before you. Sister Jean is now very real to me, thanks to you. Bravo!! |
