Immigrants Take a look around you, at the wonders right there at your feet Can’t you feel the wind a’blowing cross the golden fields of wheat Don’t you hear the water echo through the steepest canyons walls There is plenty here to see, if you would want to see it all Take a breath of springtime air, it will rejuvenate your soul Stand up and cheer the hometown players when they finally make a goal Don’t you love the Fourth of July with burgers, beer and homemade pies Does your heart soar up with those sparkling boomers to the skies Can you hear music playing, don’t you love a football game There are lots of things around us that will always be the same But some things are also changing, of a different composition Different faces blending in, and bringing in their own tradition Immigrants are coming here from far across the open sea Seeking work and peaceful living and the opportunity May they come here in the spirit of adopting a new land Not losing an identity, but gaining something truly grand May they respect this new homeland, this freedom know to me and you And may they come to love this country in the same way that I do Elizabeth Santos |

the issue of immigrantion is quite topic in Ireland, in the last few years we have have had an influx of asylum seekers and illegal residents. I recently posted a poem called "wandering" in open 8 from the point of view of an immigrant in a foreign country. Immigrants are coming here from far across the open sea Seeking work and peaceful living and the opportunity May they come here in the spirit of adopting a new land Not losing an identity, but gaining something truly grand May they respect this new homeland, this freedom know to me and you And may they come to love this country in the same way that I do A wonderful poem as always Liz, It would be nice if immigrants could enter any country and celebrate their identity instead of being afraid of racism. Maybe one day.. "monuments put from pen to paper turns me into a gutless wonder" Manic street preachers |
