Watching You Sleep

I hear you breathing even and slow
Slumber, so peaceful, becomes you.
A slight turn, a sigh escapes your lips.
Fluttering eyelids, revealing a touch of blue.

A stray strand of hair across your brow.
You look so charming and sweet.
Remembrances mayhaps that cause
You to swim deeper into your dreams.

Eighteen now, you're still just my li'l man.
I remember the day I brought you home.
Swaddled in receiving-blanket blue
You were a love I could call my own.

You've grown up straight and tall
A man in body but my li'l boy in my eyes.
You've turned out loving and caring
Somewhat lazy, I guess part of your guise.

You have a sense of humour so funny
A laugh that floats easy on a breeze.
When angered, your blue eyes get so stormy.
But clouds disappear with willingness to please.

So eighteen years later I still watch you sleep
Wondering where your life will take you.
I hope the sweetness that is in your soul,
And the love in your heart remains strong and true.

I also have a son (nineteen)who grew up faster then I wanted him to.

This poem is so lovely and heartfelt,it brought tears to my eyes.

They will always be our "little boys" won't they?

this is so sweet..how neat to have a mom writing poetry to her 18 yr old son...

no matter who theyre written to, i still call them "love letters"     i could really feel the love in this one..i imagine he must think youre pretty awesome too! .....

Debbie...yes, they will always be our "little boys". Of course I can't tell him that. lol. Thanks for reading.

dg...love letters..yes that's it exactly..a love letter. I hope he thinks I'm awesome but as long as he still loves me, it will be awesome enough for me.

This  was beautiful, he might  not treasure it now, you know the  rebellious teen thing  but  I'm sure  as he  gets  older  he  will appreciate  your ability  to express your  love so poetically !!

Sister Dear,
yes iwill always see that wide-eyed little
boy with scapes and scabs and hard won
scars...also peeking out of his plywood
walled "bedroom"...and laughing in the pool!
Hard to believe they are all grown up now...
makes ya wanna get a few more, huh?

What a beautiful tribute to your son.

"a man in body but my lil' boy in my eyes"

Very true!  Although I am 21, my mom still calls me her lil' baby girl.  You should definately show this to him, or better yet when he, someday, has a child of his own, then give this poem to him, he'll surely appreciate it then and understand the love of a parent

Take care,

This is a very touching poem.  I wish every child could experience the love that you show.

Beautiful, tender and touching, Shawna! How come it's not a book selection? Great picture too!

Thanks to all of you in your replies. I finally showed it to him and got the greatest smile and hug from him and he even wanted a print out.

In answer Denise, I didn't post it as a book selection because I didn't know how at that time. Now it's too late LOL.

Thanks again to all.

PS....Dan...I thought about it and decided that NO I don't want a few more...grandkids are good enough LOL..
