I was sixteen and you were a blonde, blue-eyed stranger, who washed my clothes, made my breakfast, drove me to school. Many years later, I wake each morning and see your face smiling back at me in my mirror. you, who waited patiently until I finally discovered that you had always been there. Now, when I see myself as a stranger reflected in the eyes of my children, I recognize the sacrifices that you made for me, your beloved child and I know who you are. I feel your pride swelling near my heart, your laughter in my voice, your tears against my cheek. and I take comfort in my discovery that against all odds, I have become you. I know who you are. You are my dear, dear mother, who turned away all the glittering gifts the world has to offer, so that you could pass on to me the greatest gift of all. Yourself. |

Debbie we often take for granted the things our mothers do, because they do these things so well and without asking for a word of thanks. a wonderful tribute to your mother. ------------------------ "Take nothing but pictures. Leave nothing but footprints. Kill nothing but time". Baltimore Grotto "To be nobody-but-yourself-in a world which is doing its best night and day, to make you everybody else - means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting." E.E Cummings. Faster- manic street preachers I am an architect, they call me a butcher I am a pioneer, they call me primitive I am purity, they call me perverted Holding you but I only miss these things when they leave I am idiot drug hive, the virgin, the tattered and the torn Life is for the cold made warm and they are just lizards Self-disgust is self-obsession honey and I do as I please A morality obedient, only to the cleansed repented *I am stronger than Mensa, Miller and Mailer I spat out Plath and Pinter I am all the things that you regret A truth that washes that learnt how to spell The first time you see yourself naked you cry Soft skin now acne, foul breath, so broken He loves me truly this mute solitude I'm draining I know I believe in othing but it is my nothing Sleep can't hide the thoughts splitting through my mind Shadows aren't clean, false mirrors too many people awake If you stand up like a nail then you will be knocked down I've been too honest with myself I should have lied like everybody else * chorus So damn easy to cave in, man kills everything (x4) ----- |

Thanks everybody! I wrote this poem for mothers day in an effort to tell her just what she means to me. I didn't have a great relationship with her as a teenager, I just couldn't relate to her. It wasn't until I got older that I began to understand the sacrifice's a mother makes for her child. This was my opportunity to thank her! |

Debbie..this is beautiful. Sometimes we never realize how much mom's mean till we are one. This is wonderful evidence of your understanding of her sacrifices. Well done!! Poetry~ Words falling on paper, painting a dream. Shawna R. Holder Boise, Idaho |
