I knew a man a strange old man He’d walk the town each day He just seemed to plod around And dream his time away To everyone he looked so strange In his dirty long grey coat With old white sneakers on his feet And on a pipe he’d tote The children called him funny names Like ‘Ghoul’ and ‘Sad’ and ‘Fink But I never saw him get annoyed He’d just……… smile and wink Sometimes I’d see him in the park Just dreaming on the seat He used to whistle simple tunes And always tap his feet And then he’d lie upon the grass Or use a tree trunk as a chair And in a little scruffy pad He’d sketch the flowers there Now everyone across the town Thought his sketches very fine And many Toffs would collect them all And discuss them over wine His house was down a narrow lane Well it really was …….a shack With three black cats upon the gate And a horse tied round the back His garden packed with bright wild flowers Was such a pretty sight And his light was always burning late As he sketched all through the night That day he never walked the town And he was never seen again Many people realised And sprinted down that lane They burst into the crumpled house And by the huge fire place They found him dead upon his bed A smile across his face His rooms were full of paintings rare And to this very day They show them to commemorate A Dreamer………passed away Jon Mewett |

~JON~ Yet another excellent poem by you. You have given the cliche "that you don't know what you have until it's gone" meaning. The town's people didn't realize until the old man was gone that his differences and "strangeness" added a uniqueness to the town and that he added beautiful flowers to life, all the while they took him for granted. Excellent moral to your story. I love the ending: "That day he never walked the town and he was never seen again many people realized and sprinted down that lane" "They burst into the crumpled house and by the huge fire place they found him dead upon his bed a smile across his face" That is a perfect ending. Although the old man has died, he had a smile on his face to show the town's people that his life had meaning and that he was content in creating works of art. And, might I add, that this poem was a work of art. You should enter this in a poetry contest as well. If you go to www.bluemountain.com, scroll down and they have a site where you can enter poems and win cash prizes. Take care, Melissa Honeybee |

Thanx everyone your so kind again. Melissa you are very astute. You've turned the key here OK. It's a sorta prophet not known in his own town thing as you say. One more thing in the story the 'Toffs'represent the society types of the town who collect his sketches.sorta admitting he may have been strange but they knew what 'Talent was. However when they burst in at the end they discover 'Paintings' of rare beauty,so good that even now they show them as a brag that this man lived in their town. The sketches were only the tip of the Dreamers ability. Although when he was alive they tried to ignore him. The dreamer sorta new this and was happy in his world with HIS art. Perhaps the last verse should have been stronger? Best wishes Jon [This message has been edited by Jon Mewett (edited 06-10-2000).] |

Very warm story poem. That is my favorite style of poetry now. It's something I started a month or so ago...I just love it. You did very well with this one. So sad, yet beautiful. Bravo! |

Jon- You're right. This could mean so much to someone. Who knows, they could have had this very experience or something close to it. I love poems like this too. Writing them, but especialy reading them. Joy |

Wow, this is better than anything I've ever written--and no offense to any of the incredible poets that post here, but--probably better than most that I've even seen... It takes quite a bit to impress me, I've seen quite a few things that would astound other people...but this one tops my list as one of the best poems I've ever read in my fourteen years of existence. I'd swear to God but since I don't do that kind of thing, I'll just leave it at this. Little Spyro T. Dragon |

Jon, I thought I would check in and see what was on the board, I never expected some thing so grand, being one of those old guys, this is very touching to me, as I put my self in his shoes, thank God I am not alone in this world, but this is outstanding, you are very good. Bill |
