NO LONGER ON ACTIVE DUTY The old pick up he drives every where he goes, is a bright red, It matches the shirt he wears and the cap on his head. There is grey in his hair, he's on the short end of his 70th summer, Time and life in general has been good to him, but growing old is a bummer. The springs that used to make his legs work, now a days are weak, And when he looks in the mirror, he sees some sag in his cheek. And the eyes that once could read the finest of print, Now have to strain to see where the light switch went. But the memories that are in this old grey head still, You would think he would forget, but no, he never will. There are things he saw and did, that would make you cry, Men he killed in battle, and friends he had to watch die. Though he doesn't look it now, once he was a mighty man, His eyes now blurry, once shinned as only the young can. His back, now slightly bent, and he walks with a touch of a limp, Muscles now weak from age, were once like ropes made from hemp. That cap he wears every where he goes, look at the emblem there, There is one like it on the shirt also, not by chance does those he wear. So if you should chance to meet him, and the emblems you have never seen, Stop and ask him what they are, then you will have the honor to meet a Marine. |

First - welcome back Bill, I've missed you. This is a wonderful poem. The flow is very good and the subject, well, you already know how I feel about that. Again - welcome back. Kim |

my grandfather...this makes me think of my grandfather...a retired marine with hands of leather, a mind full of stories, and the best raspy songs you could hope for in his lap as you go to sleep....i miss him terribly..he was my hero..and i sit here not even bothering to fight the tears... thank you for the thoughts of him... thank you for sharing this poem.. What I really like about this poem how the old guy is honored without evoking pity in the reader for what once was. The poem is more like a tribute to the man who still is. |
