Listening to every heart

What We Do
[in Memory of]

a
walk

throughout
cemetery plot

thinking about

those who have gone before us

in war
in sickness
in adversity
1874 - winter storm
influenza
at birth
at end of long life

flags flutter over Veterans
flowers grace mother's stone

dad's marker in bronze
granite markers to live on

bend, pull, clean the site
listen to history's words

I didn't know you
but I do it for family
for this woman 91 years aged
who instills in me
reasons to cherish
memories

when she is gone
I will do it for her

overlook the view on high
Highland Cemetery
named well

You will
welcome me home
in time,
in time

This reminds me of Memorial Day when I was young, we would go to the cemetery and put flowers on the graves of all these people I didn't know. My ancestors, long since dead. Sometimes, I wonder what they were like..if I'm like them. This is a lovely tribute, Sunshine, thank you.

Karilea, seems like I followed your poetry even here...

nice work by the way.

Also, are you skipping Open #7 ever since becoming moderator of Spîritual...

A bit sad, not seeing you around...

Since I do not write much about God and spirits, I am finding it difficult to post in that cross-sectional forum...But I do wish you best wishes as a moderator...

Regards, sudhir

Hey you, out there in the cold,
Getting lonely, getting old, can you feel me?
Hey you, standing in the aisle,
With itchy feet and fading smile, can you feel me?
Hey you, don't help them to bury the light.
Don't give in without a fight.
Hey you, out there on your own,
Sitting naked by the phone, would you touch me?
Hey you, with your ear against the wall,
Waiting for someone to call out, would you touch me?
Hey you, would you help me to carry the stone?
Open your heart, I'm coming home....

This is also appropriate for Veterans' Day, since you mentioned them in here also. Wonderful way to remember loved ones.

A wonderful tribute, and a great read!

Sunshine-A very lovely piece, I too wonder about some of the grave markers when I visit my dads grave and look beyond. Thank you for reminding me.
