MasterCard is maxed again
Tis the season to be jolly
Tie the tree to the roof
Fill the trunk with holly

Smothering mud all around
In his nose and eyes
His mouth will also fill
If it opens as he cries

A new doll for Molly
A train for little Steve
Pickup Auntie Mary
And hope she’ll really leave

His mother lay close
But her chest no longer rose
Her dying act was to breathe
Life in her young son’s nose

Turkey, ham and trimmings
Laden down the table
Stuffed, the family tries to rise
When fed, if they are able.

His tiny stomach grumbles
Even now he thinks of bread
Dying in Venezuelan mud
Buried alive with all the dead

Another year of giving and
The gifts were all a hit
Tummies full, TV on,
In front of the fire they sit.

Mud, cold and numbing
Suffocating him now
His tears mixing with mud
Making it wetter somehow

We wish you a Merry Christmas
We wish you a Merry Christmas
We wish you a Merry Christmas
And a Happy New Year

(sung to the tune of What Child is This)
Whose child is this that lies in mud?
His heart no longer beating
He’s no one’s child and everyone’s
Now Jesus, the child is greeting

(Written last year in memory of those who were killed or left homeless by the Venezulan floods)

Oh, this is so well written and hits hard!
A grim reminder that our lives are much more precious than anything money can buy...
Thank-you for sharing this again.

Sharon, this is such a sad piece. This really makes me appreciate everything that I have. Thank you for sharing it with us.

A magnificent rendering of extreme sweet and sour conditions!  It's difficult to genuinely appreciate the horrors experienced in those dreadful floods.  Thank you for this kind reminder.  Rae

This was so sad.........but great nonetheless.
I loved it.

I hate your socks. I'd like to burn them!
