It's so hard to watch somebody linger months with a terminal illness. The only good thing about knowing it's terminal is that you have time to say goodbye...

God's Greatest Gift

God can make a wild gardenia smell so sweet
And bless a little baby's life with a strong heartbeat.
And He can paint a million stars suspended in the sky
And give the eagle graceful wings to soar and dip and fly.
And in His greatest plan, He designed a masterpiece
Hearts and minds and tender hands - a loving family.

Children cherished every day by mothers, right or wrong,
Nourished with a father's love to last their whole life long.
Guiding tours through life's adventures, learning every day
Parents teaching progeny and showing them the way.
God's greatest gift to those of us who choose to live our life
Giving back to those we love, regardless of the strife.

Precious moments spent with those we treasure in our heart
Reliving all the memories before it's time to part.
When knocking is heard on heaven's gate and 'lo the angels stand
How blessed we are to have had the time to hold each other's hand.
A smile, a kiss, a loving touch, a tear lingering in the eye,
God's presence held close with a lasting gift: the chance to say goodbye.

God has given us many gifts that we forget too fast-
A baby's smile, a choir note, a memory from the past;
A hoot owl singing softly on a midsummer's night,
Children running, breezes blowing, the rays of dawn's first light.
While life is so often harried and our burdens may too often shift,
The love of my family will carry me always, and that is God's greatest gift.

Welcome aboard!  I'm sorry for your loss and can really identify with your beautiful poem which reminded me of the 4 days I sat with my mom, both of us knowing it was the end.  I sometimes refer to it as a beautiful death, which sounds like an oximoron.  Thank you for sharing this and I'm looking forward to more.

Welcome Linda!

This was so touching! It's nice to know you have time, that in itself is a gift. To hold the smallest of things as joy is also a gift, ones we tend to overlook so often.
Thank you for sharing! I hope to see more from you!

Please check your email for a special greeting!

When you can't make up your mind,
Which way is right for you,
Stop and softly ask yourself,
"What Would Jesus Do?"

Linda,
Thank you for this wonderful poem, which is so relevant to my life right now. It is through our faith that we can keep things in perspective in times of grave illness. I will certainly share this with my children.

Thank you everybody for such a warm welcome - ya'll are so inspiring! (I'm from Texas.) This is my first time sharing my poetry with anyone for whom it was not intended... and it was a little intimidating, but ya'll were so nice. Now I'm thinking in nothing but poetry everywhere I look, and my fingers are itching to dance on those keys. God bless all of you for your kindness. Linda
